Public Sector Wages ? Who deserves a rise the most ? on 20:31 - Jul 4 by jack247
That's the basic salary though I'm guessing? Nurses (quite rightly) earn a good few grand a year in shift allowance. Not sure if that applies to police officers?I think wages go up reasonably steeply in the first few years in all of those professions too.
Not amazing money and they do a hell of a difficult job, but easily enough to live comfortably in Swansea.

What's difficult about being a police officer?

What's difficult about being a police officer?
The last 3 weeks assisting my team of dog handlers searching through the remains a certain crime scene in west London, trying (and succeeding, if you can call it that) to find any fragments of bone to help give the grieving families a bit of closure. That's been a bit difficult. I've also been bottled, had a gun pulled on me, 2 knives and was head butted only a few weeks ago.
Out of interest what do you do? Apart from being a provocative sanctimonious tw@?

Both.
In the context of this thread, someone earning an average wage for the Swansea area. National average was £27,600 in 2015. I think it's fair to assume that would reduce a fair bit if it didn't include London. I also wouldn't mind betting that the average wage in South Wales is lower than most parts of the UK. Nurses will be grossing that early in their careers when you factor in shift allowance.
In general, I'd say the average person in Swansea is capable of voicing their opinion, rather than resorting to a rudimentary up and down arrow system. They have a bit more about them than mart6.

Odd comparisons there. Qualified nurses and coppers starting out compared to minimum wage jobs.
Fwiw the average public sector wage in Wales is higher than the private sector equivalent. But again that's not the full picture because of the concentration of public sector and civil service jobs here. Senior management and senior civil service will often be on upwards of £100k , bumping the average up fairly significantly.
And I don't accept the premise that because private sector wages are lower those in the public sector should match them. It's not a race to the bottom, or at least it shouldn't be. The more everyone earns the more everyone spends, thus boosting the economy and creating even more jobs so even more people have money to spend and further boost the economy and create even more jobs...
Etc.
Edit - just be clear, I'm not suggesting majoraglan is saying this. I just went off on one a bit.

Absolutely. The private sector worker has been hit, sometimes harder, with wage freezes.
One thing the public sector has on its side is a union. Something has to give and it will soon.
Unfortunately it is public money that will be used to fund the increase so the private sector will look on in envy if cutbacks in the sector continue.

It's because it doesn't fit the narrative of the people's republic of Corbynland where everyone in the world lives in peace and all the military will be needed for is to round up and shoot the filthy fat cat capitalists who have more than four pounds forty pence in savings.

Aye easy when you have worked 17 hours and haven't had a proper day off in weeks.

Many nurses, doctors, paramedics, care workers etc, do that day in day out. The majority of police work is routine, uneventful and undemanding, however the west London scene can't have been peasant, but fortunately that's rare

Just trying to put some context around wages, comparing what a nurse earns to compared to someone on minimum wages. I wasn't trying to score any points just making a comparison.
Wife has a relative who has a construction company, he pays his brickies around £18ph. He's a good guy and a good employer, he looks after his staff and I think they appreciate him.

I know someone who is a police officer, he went to call a couple of weeks ago and was attacked by someone who had a knife, he was lucky he was wearing body armour! Same officer got injured over the weekend after another incident.
Look at the recent incidents in London, the PC who confronted the 3 terrorists in London and the PC who died in Westminster.
We are pretty fortunate that a most of the people who work in our public services, the hospitals, fire brigade, paramedics, police, teachers are good people who do a good job day in day out. I think they deserve a decent pay rise after all this time.

I saw two special constable coppers on Saturday with a pcso. I think that answers your question. Three bodies on the street for the price of half a copper.
Yes, and a criminally irresponsible false economy. Would you allow a nurse onto a ward with a fraction of the training, knowledge and powers to do the job?- complete lunacy. The monster of trying to save public money at all costs has gone too far. The good news is that society in general is coming to properly understand that you can't get a decent society on the cheap. There are one or two still in denial, but they're inevitably the people who agreed with the idiotic delusion that there is no such thing as society. The answer is that every public servant needs a pay rise- to value their contribution towards the one thing that should bind us all together- citizenship.

Police officers don't get a shift allowance, they sign on for a 24/7 rota. In terms of pensions, they used to pay 11% of their pay with an option to pay AVC's to a maximum of 15% which is much, much more than most people pay-and many who did this paid in to Equitable Life and lost their AVC's when they went under. Some ignorant individuals attack public service pensions and the (generally) lower retirement ages, but I would ask if the public want 65 year old Firemen and Cops? Both haverecently suffered vicious politically motivated attacks to their pay, conditions of service and pensions. For example, police officers with more than 10 years left were told that they actually had, on average, an additional 10 years added, with pensions sums roughly halved, and would be paying much more for them....and the person driving this has the affrontery to tell the country how she values the work of the public services....priceless.

It never struck you that the level of public spending is all that the Uk can afford?
Or even more than it can afford as the govt still spent over 6% more than it took in. This with a "growing" economy and massive QE, and various schemes to bring demand from the future and prop up the housing market.
Uk (or japan) has the highest overall debt in the world and may well be heading for a recession. People may well look back at these times as halcyon days.

A lot would prefer a volunteer Fire Service and no council tax like Germany,

No, 'Austerity' is a political choice motivated primarily to lower the tax burden of those more financially fortunate. It didn't work in the 1930s and it hasn't now- and a classic example of Santayana's most famous prophetic quote. Before you condemn me as a naive Corbynite, what I would accept is that the best hope of a long term successful post -Brexit fix is for Britain to re- discover a broader industrial base. Put simply we need to start making more things. Sadly, since 1979 people have bought the equally lus cross myth that you can prop an economy up with a financial services industry and a generation of graduates with pointless degrees who thought they were going to be executives but ended up in call centres. Tories and Labour are equally culpable. It explains why many EU migrants from supposedly less affluent countries saw Britain as an attractive prospect. We sneered at the idea of getting a trade but this where we have most need. Bring back mass apprenticeships for 16 year old....oh, we've not got enough people to train them anymore.
