Leroy Fer loses 4k 02:49 - Sep 24 with 7964 viewsFredManRave

Sounds like he's chomping at the bit to get back playing after his Sunderland "dissapointment". Great news for us as a fit and firing Fer could and should do some serious damage in this league. On form he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Bench on Friday, impact sub to kill the game off...

I disagree. Who would he replace? Luongo? Chery? Those two have been playing great. I wouldn't replace either of them.

Fer played well towards the end of last year, but there were also many times when he often looked disinterested and half-hearted. He has to prove himself and win himself a place in the team. Nothing is automatic.

Fair enough Dylan, but I'll just reiterate the point that a fit and firing Fer should be playing but he has to earn the right, as you say, hopefully starting on Friday...

I obviously can't comment on Luongo and Chery as I've hardly seen them play and when I have it's been from my armchair, however, the article below doesn't make for great reading for Luongo although I suppose it depends on how much you actually want to read into it;

I don't think I've ever seen such an irrelevant stat. It shows he gets on the ball regularly and tries to do something difficult rather than pass it sideways and abdicate responsibility.

Totally agree. He's only in their because he takes responsibility for moving the ball forward. Henry for example will pass sideways or backwards out of fear of losing the ball. The fact he's highest in the league is probably not great but he's adjusting to the level and looks likely to improve with experience.

I think fer should replace Henry and hold. With his experience and physical presence he should be able to adapt to that role.

Question is not so much about his experience and physical presence, but whether he would have the discipline for a holding role

If we signed a 21-year-old Patrick Vieira, Karl Henry would still be first name on the team sheet.

I'd happily give Fer a try in that position but fully expect him back injured after three games and moved on quietly in January.

Fer can be a decent player but is a lazy sod and I'm not sure he'll fancy it when the going gets tough, he didn't last year

Would dropping mass back into Henry's position and putting fer where mass played work?

I think we are more likely to see Sandro on Friday than Fer

Fer for Henry - Mass next to Faurlin. I can't keep reiterating how little Henry is needed in this league.

That article is a classic example of the difference between stats and actually going to a game.

Have only seen him once this season (Blackburn) but FWIW he was in my list of three that seemed to give the ball away unnecessarily. KH was way out in front with Perch in second and Luongo third.

Admittedly it was only one game I think but Luongo looked pretty useless in that position v Charlton and has been excellent overall further forward. If either of them should be the one to sit deeper then it's Fer for me.

But Fer gives you that ability to support Charlie in the box when crosses come in - he's really good in the air and a big man arriving late, running onto a cross is almost unstoppable. Luongo has been great in the more advanced role but his remit is very much creation an dindustry, something he can still do in a box-to-box midfield role. It would be VERY attacking, but at home especially I think it would be worth the risk. We have enough to steamroll teams and I think we should start doing it.

I'm not sure where this lazy tag comes from. When he was playing left mid he didn't get up and down like Mackie would, but he shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Under Ramsay, he was very good in the no.10-type role. Didn't ever think he didn't fancy it - indeed, without his goals we'd have gone down earlier and had he not been injured at Sunderland we'd have gone a lot closer to staying up.

For me it's a no-brainer, when fit he should be just behind Austin. He can win the ball in the air. He's dangerous with long shots and late runs into the box and he won't be required to run back and help the centre backs too much. Then I'd play Luongo as a holder.

Bare bones.

Exactly as I see it. He played what, 2 games in the number 10 role behind Austin? I'd be surprised if he wasn't MoM for both of them.

Liverpool spent £15 million on Joe Allen from Swansea who does just that.

gets ball
passes it back

gets ball again
passes it back

gets ball again
passes it back

Never saw him play any ball into a threatening area, at least Gerrard did that.

£15 million.

There have been times when he has failed to track back or has done so by trotting, not sprinting. Not that he is the only player guilty of this.

Playing the holding role is not his forte and I totally agree that he is best deployed in an advanced role. That said, in all the time that our players have been playing football, they will definitely have been asked to play in more than role, so they should be more than capable of adapting. It's not like a dentist being told: "No teeth for you today, mate, you're on open heart surgery duty. Off you go".

We definitely need at least one holding midfielder who sticks rigidly to their task and who does not drift upfield, unless another midfielder or striker has stepped in to cover for him temporarily.

Fer has all the attributes to be one of the best players in the Championship. I think losing out on a move to Dick Advocaat's Comedy Football Parody came as a bit of a blow to his career plans (to say nothing of his self-esteem, the poor dear) but if he tears it up with us, I'm sure he'll get his dream move to Stoke, Leicester or Aston Villa at Christmas.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'
