Apparently he's been able to speak the language for ages (he does during training) but just not post-match because he doesn't want the hassle. Enjoyably obtuse if you ask me.
That's much better than most of the people having a go at him would speak in Spanish after a year or two in a Spanish-speaking country.
He just feels safer speaking to the media through a translator and he knows if he doesn't do so, most of his words would get twisted. They'd still will, but he feels more comfortable speaking in Spanish.
Seb is right - He speaks English to a very good level. Just when it comes to dealing with the press he uses a translator to avoid having his words twisted and taken out of context. I wonder how long he can keep it up before the Fleet Street knives come out?
Sorry, I'm not buying that. If he can speak English then he should do so in interviews. I doubt that the reverse situation would go down to well in Argentina.
