Blackburn To Bid For Sam Gallagher
Friday, 5th Jul 2019 13:48

Sky Sorts sources are saying that after being in talks for a week, Blackburn Rovers will submit a formal bid for Sam Gallagher.

Blackburn are of course a club whom Gallagher played on loan for in 2016/17 and they are keen to take him back to Ewood Park, they are facing pressure though from near neighbours Wigan Athletic and Saints will hope that pushes up the price a little.

Sky say that Saints are open to offers starting at £5 million and although that is not great in the grand scheme of things, it will all add up when some of the other fringe players are sold.

Despite Saints striking issues Gallagher had little opportunity to show what he could do last season, in the Premier League he made only 4 appearances, all as sub totalling only 32 minutes, with only his 23 minute spell at Brighton April being significant game time.

It was not much better in the cups with two sub appearances, one in each competition being his total, although against Derby in the FA Cup replay he did get the bonus of 30 minutes extra time.

Saints fans will wish him all the best and thank him for his career Saints total of 3 starts plus 19 as sub in the Premier League plus another 4 sub appearances in both domestic cups, with a total of 2 goals from those games, 1 in the Premier league.

But the truth is that he needs to get away from Saints to make his mark, I stand by what I said recently that he might yet succeed at the highest level and that a clean start at somewhere like Blackburn might just be the catalyst he needs for a successful top flight career to be kick started.

At 23 turning 24 in September he has time on his side.

Agreed, he needs to go for the sake of his own career. Clearly he wasn't going to be used even when we were down to the bare bones so no point in him staying. I hope he goes to Blackburn, Wigan are relegation candidates and don't see them having a fun time this season. If he goes, then all the best Sam!

Nonsense he hasn't got time on his side. At his current age, he should have made a lot more appearances. Please bear in mind JWP has already made 234 apps and he's only a year older. How he's managed that number of appearances is beyond belief considering his lack of talent!

Nonetheless, Gallagher could have got this move 2 years ago and at the very least built up his experience in the Championship in a similar vein to James Maddison who had made 113 apps before his move to Leicester. Maddison is currently being touted for potential moves to clubs like Man U.QQ

Instead, he got comfortable playing in the reserves staying in the Southampton youth bubble!

I genuinely had high hopes for Gallagher. I thought with a little more confidence, toughness and hunger to improve he could have replaced Pelle in the longer term.

Hopefully he learns from his experience at Saints and kicks on at Blackburn or Wigan.

Good luck to him.

There are 3 positions that are toughest for young / Academy players to compete for.
Goalie, CB and CF. Sam has (seemingly) all the attributes to become a good CF but has had very few chances to gte a run of games and prove himself.
His loan-outs havewn't been a great success either.
A move now is a good choice for everyone concerned.

Good well balanced article Nick. He's another like Targett who has been around Staplewood too long and is maybe too comfortable in his familiar surroundings. Perhaps being paid too much too soon is not helping his development either as most people judge their success in life by how much they are paid rather than how much they are worth.

Would of thought when Ralph gave him a run out that he would of played like a man who was grabbing his chance with both hands and playing his socks off, instead he looked like he couldn't careless, donkey like, so for me I see no loss.

That's the point, he has not impressed when given his chance and when asked to play for the U23's he seemed to me to sulk his way through the match at St Mary's.

He had to develop his career further instead of staying stuck right where he is... He's going to adapt to the new conditions quickly. As it has been said at jokesfan.com, What did the football say to the football player? I get a kick out of you. Sooo... he's going to get a kick out of everyone - just a little bit more practise!
