I think Varane is a very promising player who has potential to get much better, particularly if Marti can get him going forwards more. The weird thing is we've seen glimpses against Bristol City and Leicester of that side of his game but his instinct is to be risk averse.
Some of these refs just like to do odd things. There was that one who kept doing funny little sprints from the goalkeeper up to the halfway line. Scratch the surface and most of them are Cooting away.
The decision not to send off Choudury summed that ref up. Would have booked him for the foul on Koki if he hadn't already been on a yellow but bottled it and Wilder subbed him off soon afterwards. Down to ten men for the last quarter and it's a different game. It's weird, when I watch The Big Match Revisited they seem less awful - maybe we need Brian Moore to announce where they're from before kick-off to improve things.
Thought him and the linesman on that side were awful. The ref was a typical homer (for the away side) sucking up to the team likely to be in the Premier League next season.
If the lino did his job properly, he wouldn't get lighters thrown at him. QED.
It was after the challenge on Dembele, wasn't it? How he cannot flag for that I don't know.
Depressing to see the lack of improvement this season. Still slow as f*** to break; Dunne being our most creative player says it all. Is Marti really all that? Got to say seeing Fat Frank take Coventry into the play-offs and you do start to wonder. Big summer ahead. Think most of that team won't be here next season. I just hope we get some quick players in - Nourry said that we're going for younger players and one hopes we will have more like Koki going forward.
Insane that we weren't monetising the sponsorship and advertising for years. Maybe now we can get a Watford-style arrangement in place with a European club and shift Taylor Richards for £20m.
As someone who found yesterday's match incredibly disappointing and frustrating, seeing Luton looking set for League 1 does put it in perspective. Really shocking to see a steroid-boosted relegated team fall off a cliff like that.
As further evidence, a newly promoted team have done the double over us, the most recent victory secured by a midfield containing two of our cast-offs from last season. If it's really true Nourry vetoed the signing of Hayden to get Ashby on loan instead, then he should hang up his laptop.
Defence - Dunne has been superb but our outstanding defender, who stood up to the home crowd getting on his back admirably yesterday, is not ours. Morrison looks like a good find but ironically has lost his place to Edwards.
Midfield - has looked good on occasions but yesterday highlighted how we need improvement. Varane was schooled by Hayden and we lacked creativity. Madsen was clearly bought for that purpose but now can't even get on the bench.
Attack - I'll never knock Frey but he is limited. Alfie and Kohli are promising, and Celar, despite his goals at Cardiff, is still unproven. Smith has pace but anonymous performances like yesterday show why we need better - Yang deserved to start based purely on his assist against Derby which was light years ahead of Smith. Again, the loan player is better than what we have. Obviously love Koki.
So for me, if you take out the loan players, the main improvement is the goalkeeper and the emergence of some decent young raw talent. We're still weak as piss whenever we come up against a tough, basic Championship team like Millwall or Portsmouth, and that needs to be addressed in the summer otherwise it's midtable mediocrity again in perpetuity.
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. Still a lot of rebuilding to do if we're ever going to get of this division. We have a soft underbelly and it showed against both Millwall and Pompey.
I'm really disappointed tonight because this year was an opportunity to get in the play-offs. It is wide open but I think our ship has sailed now and we need to be planning for next season. Worrying that our best player, head and shoulders above the rest, is a loanee.
I was a bit concerned by Marti's interview in The Independent as he spoke about letting players get on with it when they're on the pitch. It certainly felt like that today - just boot it aimlessly onto their defender's head and repeat. Slow to make subs too. Would have liked to see some changes at half-time but we came out even more passive in the second half.
Not good for a newly promoted team to be taking six points off us, particularly with Dozy Dozzell in their side.
I disagree with Clive's preview. We haven't improved this season: we're very easy to beat by basic teams like Portsmouth, our best player is a loanee and we still haven't got a decent striker.
This season is a real missed opportunity. Thought we were appalling today and played into their hands by booting the ball in the air all game.
