RfromItaly is correct. Fan ownership of football clubs operating in capitalist economies does not work. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona may offer fans a say in the club's direction, but they have high financial barriers for presidential candidates and instances of corruption, such as Barcelona's "Barcagate" scandal, undermine the democratic nature of these structures. Bayern Munich's fan ownership under the "50+1" rule doesn’t really ensure fans retain control, as corporate influence remains through minority stakeholders like Adidas and Audi, and financial growth is limited compared to EPL/EFL with external investments. RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim are two clubs that have successfully managed to effectively enter private ownership in Germany. For Leipzig, the members are all employees of parent company Red Bull. In effect big corporates maintain their grip on power with fan owned clubs. |
