Or Martin and Southampton. It makes sense really. Pointless bidding on a player/manager unless you know you can afford the total package. These days agreeing a price with the selling club seems almost like the last thing to be sorted. The myth that no contact takes place before a bid is accepted is handy for all involved to avoid anarchy. |

I don't think Coventry have approached him out of the blue. I think the interest has been sought out by MG's agent as a result of the above. As for him knowing what's on offer, that's pretty standard these days. Nobody pays anything but lip service to the tapping up rules. Everything is done through agents so the players can honestly say they've had no contact with the buying club. |

OK. Here's my theory based on what we know so far, what has happened in the past and what we know about the personalities involved. Possibly cobblers, maybe a hint of truth. The players aren't happy with Wiliams. That much seems certain. So Grimes, in his capacity as "Captain", and as we know he has done before, has gone to Coleman to whinge about it. Coleman, undoubtedly suffering from his own buyers remorse over Williams, facing the headache of finding a replacement during a transfer window and well aware that Grimes' griping was one of the reasons why we found ourselves in the position of needing to appoint him in the first place, has lost his temper and basically told Statty to shut up and play, to do what we're handsomely paying him to do. Grimes has gone to the rest of the squad for support and found out that he is perhaps not as universally popular as he might have thought. Lots of them are new, many may be harbouring their own doubts as to whether a style of play that seems to have been custom designed to suit one man may not be ideal to make the best out of their own talents. MG's agent suddenly finds himself with extra work to do. [Post edited 31 Jan 9:40]

I dunno. Buying a failing company that they have no expertise in running and then spending years and countless millions propping it up sounds like a very Welsh Government thing to do. |

Decent Scrabble score too. Apparently their owner has acknowledged that one "big name" will be leaving there this window. This one fits the bill both literally and in terms of stature. |

I guess it's not technically a recall if the dates are included in the initial agreement. Something is ringing a bell somewhere where this has been done before, although I might be wrong. [Post edited 29 Jan 22:15]

If his registration changes hands then he's not joining outside of the window. |

He's not fond of a tackle, which stats bear out. He's not high tempo, high mileage, all of which lend themselves to picking up injuries. He's probably also naturally resilient. He's tailor made for the kind of idiots who have managed our club for most of the past four years. Heavy on the possession, light on the entertainment, so managerial acceptance is also high. |

You really have to be spectacularly dim to assume that ability as a player in any way equates to ability as a coach, especially when it comes to a two time loser in the job like Frank Lampard. If Frankie is of the modern school of thinking then no doubt he is convinced that Grimes is as good as the stats would suggest. Of course, those with a bit of sense know full well that stats should be treated with suspicion, especially when it comes to Statty Grimes. Even today I've seen someone bigging up his "completed passes in the final third" numbers as if they related to actual creativity instead of fairly meaningless switches between flanks. |

Low, Widell and one other midfielder for me. Can't rely on Joe unfortunately. |

This is the key for me. There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that we're capable of being a much quicker, much more entertaining team to watch without Grimes forcing the rest of the side into second gear, but there will be an adjustment period, and there remains the question of the man overseeing it. Coleman needs to deliver at least one, preferably two extra midfield bodies before the window closes. I'd probably settle for that if the manager was swapped out soon after. |

Watching that is what made me certain he wasn't playing as a winger. On the left of a midfield, but certainly not the kind of touchline hugging role we had him in. |

He didn't play as a "winger" in the same way that he did for us. At best you could say that he was on the left hand side of midfield. Look at the highlights, basically all his key contributions came when he was central. Orient fans also seem fairly sure that he was in midfield. [Post edited 29 Jan 9:30]

Let's face it, despite wearing the armband for years Grimes has never been the "Captain" of the team in any meaningful sense. Andre Ayew led the team by example on the pitch from 2019 to 2021. Flynn Downes showed him up for a season, and since then we've been adrift. |

It's obviously far too early to conclude that letting AA go was definitely a mistake, but it's a handy reminder that we probably shouldn't be judging the performances of the vast majority of the players who have come under the skilful instruction of Luke Williams. |
