A turning point perhaps?
at 15:34 7 Sep 2024

Thought you were a bit of a freedom warrior.

Absolutely no denying the correlation between human rights/freedoms and democracy. Obvious really - those in power in democracies can be held to account by the press, the legislature, the judiciary and the ballot box. Whereas those with autocratic power can do whatever they like to whoever they like and are only held to account by military coups.

Easy to claim moral relativism, Jelly - 'all as bad as each other'. Except they're not.

Here's some basic starter material for you to use in applying some critical thinking to this issue:

I think it was also the utter gibberish coming out of his mouth that enabled everyone to get Jones's number so quickly.

Martin fighting for his job…

Pretty sure it wasn't part of the SR plan to get relegated the first time and tbh they got pretty lucky getting back at the first attempt.

For all their loyalty to RM, they really won't want to get relegated again, so they will replace him if/when they feel they have to.

The Give Russell a chance thread
at 11:44 5 Sep 2024

He needs to be given a chance and he absolutely did need to give the success stories from last year a chance too.

Adam Armstrong for example had scored 2 goals in each of previous two PL seasons and that was probably enough to know that he's not really a PL striker. But he did so well last season he needed another go. (I also feel that if he ever got into a bit of a streak in the PL, things might be different. We'll prob never find out).

But there is an issue here. Possession football is the way RM plays, that's why he was appointed and we can't just expect him to suddenly change his style at the flick of a switch.

There is an issue for him personally though, if he sticks to this style and he gets sacked or we get relegated, that's probably his PL career done. So some pragmatism might start to kick in for him at some point.

Much prefer to see us sending players to the Belgium league rather than recruiting from it.

If it happens its good. Edozie has been all dribble and anticlimax.

Richard Keys views on Russell Martin

It's pretty reasonable and rational to use Burnley as an example of what can and can't be done in the PL. And clever people learn from the mistakes of others rather than always insisting on making their own.

However, RM has still got my support if he wants to keep trying to play this way for a few games longer. It's probably madness but he's earned the right to a bit of indulgence.

We'll get out first point against United with a new look starting line up, nick the game against Ipswich 1-0 and then push on to beat Boscombe who took 82 mins to register a shot on target at the weekend.

What's all the fuss about!

The Solution Is Clear For Russell Martin If He Is To Stay In His Job
at 11:51 3 Sep 2024

At the start of last season we also conceded a fair few goals by p!issing about at the back but then that stopped and we went on a great run.

Certainly we need a keeper who has the ability to play this way, so expecting McCarthy to play like this was daft, and quickly changed last season, but now we've got a keep with good feet again. And Bellis, Bednarek, KWP are all used to this too.

We're up against faster and stronger opposition in the press, there will be a few nerves in the mix and Bellis is playing at this level for the first time. So a step up is needed but that'll take time. But I don't see why, necessarily, we can't continue to play this way, at least for a few games longer.

And also conceding the odd goal from a mistake is not going to be so costly once we start scoring regularly at the other end.

Whose to say playing any other way is going to reap rewards? We've had more success with RM than anyone else recently.

This was always going to be a possibility. I think he scored 2 goals in each of his previous PL seasons. But he got us promoted so he had to be given another chance. It's very possible that this level is too much for him.

Same doubts are there about Smallbone. Championship might be his level.

But we've got other options now, so i doubt either will start the next game.

See it finished 2-0 to Selles today in League 1.

With Robbie Savage's son getting the first and popular singing star Sam Smith getting the second.

You beat me to it re Edozie. Biggest problem is that he doesn’t seem to have improved much since we first saw him.

If it’s so tricky for these top 6 teams, why don’t they just f*ck off out of this completion completely.

Ridiculous that 4 of them should have guaranteed home draws.

The football decision makers never fail to @rse things up.

I think RM has earned the right to give it a go, even if the history of other teams doing it are not hopeful.

Losing two games by narrow margins because of individual mistakes isn't enough evidence of failure for me.

And I'd rather the team were playing in a style they know while they are all getting up to speed with the new level and bedding in new players.

Southampton V Nottingham Forest The Verdict.
at 11:05 27 Aug 2024

At this stage so much is about seeing who can step up to PL level.

Armstrong and Smallbone were not really able to in the past but they've got to be given another chance to see if they have improved since the last time we were here. They both looked very good last season, so let's see.

Bellis is playing at this level for the first time.

Downes too was excellent in the second tier but maybe WH knew something about him at this level that we are going to find out.

For me, really only Bednarek and KWP are proven at this level. (And maybe I've missed some of the new arrivals).

And tbh it's just as likely that Dibbling or Amo-Ameyaw can cut it as anyone else, as they are both too young to have been really tested anywhere, so we don't know how good they are.

Edozie is another one. He had a few good games playing down the left last season but the evidence so far is that he doesn't quite cut it. He was the player who I thought disappointed most on Saturday.

Early days. We'll know properly in 4 or 5 games time.

Getting the impression that VAR is going to be involved much less this year.

But when it does, we can still expect it to f*ck up and we can still expect stupid 'level' offsides too.

Sooner it's gone the better.

I agree, areasix. Last year the RM approach looked hopeless in the first few games but he persevered and then it worked.

We are stepping up a level and new players are finding their feet in the team.

It's going to take time for everything to click playing this way in this league. But there are encouraging signs.

Let's give RM and the team some time ffs. If it doesn't work it doesn't work, but there's no saying anything else is going to work either.

Don't panic. Don't panic....

Yes, I was there.

I agree seeing Armstrong and Diaz tight to the touchlines was unusual, but I took the view the they were there to stretch the Forest back line across the pitch, or at the very least that they were there deliberately and that RM had a plan putting them there.

RM got us promoted after one season and gave us a great day out at Wembley. He deserves some respect from us as a manager and I am very sure that he know a f*ck of a lot more about football management than I do.
