There's probably been conversations going on behind the scenes, but airing these views in public is refreshing, and likely happening now since Pep's winning ways started to take a downturn [Post edited 19 Dec 23:31]

One of the ultimate idiocies of the system is goalkeepers being picked due to their marginally better passing ability (but still nowhere near professional standard) rather than their abilities as a... goalkeeper When that's the system and the keeper with the "better" footwork is out injured, the replacement is still expected to pass to under-pressure defenders. The result is pretty inevitable, which is why it was anathema for the preceding 100-odd years of professional football |

An interesting development, for lots of reasons Doubt it would've happened last season |

A stamp? Is that what the Tamworth Twitter posted? |

Got the job done in the end, which makes our last 8 league games: LWLWLWLW Given that sequence, i'd probably settle for a draw against Boston... (Not really) |

Well at least this thread makes up for the lack of one until after the D&R match had finished... |

An ignominious end to the test year then, and further concerns over Stokes' fitness. Why on earth he thought it a good idea to put himself through so many overs - quite unnecessarily - i've no idea. You can't "lead from the front" is you're out injured, but he's got six months to get himself right again, and (according to Trescothick) he'll be better advised in future Still, the series was won, and new talent coming through |

Connelly was definitely a winger, but i was wrong about getting a sniff, since it turns out he played in the opening game, the notorious bore-draw against Uruguay Edit: in which case, it can't have been 442 in that first game... [Post edited 16 Dec 21:15]

No, definitely just two forwards, i.e. Hurst and Hunt in the '66 WCF If it'd been 433, two of the forwards would've played in wide roles, even if not the older type of winger, although the system eventually evolved into 433 In the end, it worked because we had a few world class players, plus Alan Ball whose performance in the final coined (i think) the phrase "covered every blade of grass" Edit: the only true winger in Ramsey's squad was John Connelly of Blackburn, but he never got a sniff during the tournament [Post edited 16 Dec 20:38]

...especially if we left out the goalkeeper But seriously, no-one's suggesting that either. The game evolves, always has done. I started watching just as Ramsey's "wingless wonders" came into fashion (that's the origin of 442's username) but once everyone adopts a system, the coach who can come up with something more effective against that system takes the lead and the tide turns, until the next time |

You certainly haven't suggested anyone should take it or leave, but there's been one or two who have - or even suggested that not going along with the JM manual makes people dinosaurs. We'll see who survives when the next footballing asteroid hits... |

What a bloody great Christmas present that'd be, for every football fan There've been posts suggesting "that's the modern game" with a touch of "take it or leave it" Those a bit longer in the tooth (or losing their teeth, even) know that all things change; at least all those things subject to the whims of 'fashion' As posted yesterday, Dale fans are a patient lot, we have to be but it looks at last as if patience is wearing thin. We're stuck with the current coaching manual for now, but any coach who can't adapt as the tide starts to turn will find themselves drowning [Post edited 16 Dec 18:24]

That's a brilliant article, thanks for finding and posting it Reminded me that i was at that Wolves v Man City League Cup Final in 1974. At the time, you could buy a combined coach & match ticket for Wembley (can't remember if it was Ellen Smith's or Yelloway) but i was stood in the Wolves end when John Richards scored the winner... chaos! Had no idea Bodell was involved with them, and never saw him play for Dale (just before my time) but his story shows the ups and downs of football and how much depends on attitude and appreciation of being involved RIP |

It could be argued that Dale have some of the most patient fans in the country Those who've followed for decades will understand what i mean by that It's not patience that's lacking James. As i pointed out earlier, we also know what progression looks like, KH being the prime example. It took him three and half years to achieve what no Dale manager had done for over 40 years, but we could see the progression happening - we could smell it, in fact, the excitement being palpable What we're seeing right now looks and feels nothing like that. I'm not being unfair in comparing JM to KH, who was probably a once-in-our-lifetime's manager, just suggesting (as nordenblue described it) that it feels like we're playing with the handbrake left on, deliberately, and that's not a recipe for building either success or the fanbase |

Hardly rocket science, since (in the absence of spendthrift owners) that's what any team in any division would need to do, and exactly what all our competitors are trying to do What we're more interested in is genuine signs of progression, both in general and during the course of games. As said before, the games over the holiday period are key, both in terms of regaining momentum, league position and crucially, morale |

Good point about legislation involving a regulator, and the club may be awaiting the fine detail, but provision of a GS needn't be contingent upon something that may not happen, or just be "kicked into the long grass" due to other government priorities Communicating this would be simple and uncontroversial |

I don't disagree 49th, it's just that there's a much bigger fish to fry in my opinion And that's getting people through the turnstiles. The way we play just won't do that, however many points we pick up along the way Football is an entertainment, and it's more than perfectly evident that we just aren't being entertained My hope (more than expectation) is that JM will gain the confidence to set the talents of this squad free. That's precisely the kind of magic that KH set in motion, and JM played under KH so you'd hope something would've rubbed off. In the meantime, there's always next year, or year after... |

As per the "discussion" on here in midweek, this will be seen as the arbiter of how the relationship between owners and fans can move forward It needs to be established how this will come about - not as a promise, but as a fact, a reality Having "the Trust" as the holders of the Golden Share suggests the Ogdens see the Trust as it is, and has been known, for many years now It's unlikely to be offered to any other body, but this all needs to be fully set out and communicated, along with a timeline |

Don't be cruel 49th has just spent the best part of his Saturday evening working all that out! |

Even a draw on Tuesday would put us back to sixth As i said earlier, it's tight. I just wish i could stop thinking of metaphors |
