Australia all-rounder Shane Watson faces a battle to be fit for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on 21 November.

The 32-year-old sustained a hamstring injury while bowling in Australia's final one-day international against India last Saturday.

Aussie tactics are pretty clear, they're going to try and bully and intimidate our players, hope we've got enough spirit about us to stand up to them, but the body language didn't look good in this game.

Clarke telling Anderson when he came out to bat, "get ready for a broken arm" just proves what an odious little twunt the bloke is.

Only taken one win for Aussie self esteem to be restored to former glories. Fair play I suppose if they win the series but wouldn't think motivation will be an issue for Trott and Co now.
Clarke is a c**t but with a lot of talent to back it up - not so sure on Warner and Johnson who may have peaked early?
Has set series up though.

Adelaide is a biggy. Lose it and we're fcked. Draw without the weather's help or win and it's game on.

That Bailey's got some neck for a bloke who doesn't even average 40 in first class cricket, the mouthy ginger c*nt. Jimmy surely won't need any motivation to get fired up when he sees him coming out to bat.

Sadly the Aussies have got their mojo back. I still think we have the better team but they will have gained loads of confidence (bad thing) from this thrashing.

I've always thought Johnson was a natural fast bowler. He's had Dennis Lilley (one of the greatest) sort out his run up and his action and he's going to be a massive influence for Aussie in the rest of the series.

I really hope that Cook can summon up some of the Jardine spirit because we are going to need to be a lot mentally tougher than the last few days.

Everyone knows the Aussies are bad losers (which they've always turned into a positive) but they are even worse winners. Time to show some class. Some chance.

Take your eye patch off fellas. Australia has been copping dog's abuse from the England team for years. The sledging from your lot has been sobering. You can only fully expect a return bout after Australia humiliating England for the first time in a long while. Mouthy carndts are on both teams.

Mind you i hope Anderson and co keep their minds on what they do best.
The aussie t**ts will love it if England try and bombard them with short bowling.
Yes there is a place for short balls but our bowlers are better when they concentrate on getting them out, rather than knocking them out.

Going to be interesting East as Johnson has very rarely strung a run of consistantly good games together in his test career to date.
Ditto for Warner who doesn't have anything like say Haydens record to back up the trash talk.

One more wicket on day one, Haddin or Johnson and it could have been an entirely different result.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Australia didn't achieve world peace, discover the secret to everlasting life and cures for all cancers over the weekend? Oh, they won a game of cricket against England at their sixth attempt in the last few months. This apparently means they are the best team the world has ever seen.

Mitchell Johnson will single handedly win the series. Mitchell Johnson has had matches like this before (Perth test on the last tour for example). He's never been able to do it consistently before and often follows up a great game with a nightmare. He's been around long enough now to suggest that inconsistency will always be a problem for him.

They won this game and won well but the way they carry on is infantile. One game out of 6, calm down.

End of Day 1 there was all to play for but England held the initiative - which is crucial if you hold the Ashes. By lunch of Day 2 It had swung towards Aus but still too early to call anything much. By tea Aus had won the match.

That's pretty dramatic and altho' the Aussies will predictably go over the top about it you have to face facts - initiative is now with Aus, they're on home turf and their natural arrogance/self belief has had just the boost they want, and if England don't work out how to play the short stuff we're toast. Swann also needs to step up a gear - he shouldn't be out-bowled by Lyons.

That said, in the 2nd innings Cook showed how to play Johnson. But for the rain interruption he might have played out the day - he's done it plenty times before. In fact I reckon the challenge he now faces - leading by example, building a batting platform and standing firm in a crisis - actually plays to his strengths as a captain. He's not been in form since India and if he hits form that's a massive boost to England. Carberry was unlucky 2nd innings and I reckon could do OK against the quicks. Root also played well 2nd innings and was not troubled by the quicks. Bell and Pietersen are both class acts - each better than any Aus batsmen IMO, including Clarke - and will find it a lot easier of they actually have a platform to build on. The bowling, apart from Swann, was excellent 1st innings and can't really be judged on 2nd innings when the batsmen had handed them an impossible task and only 4 hours rest. Might need to bring in Rankin for Tremlett though if the pitches after Adelaide are going to be bouncy - wouldn't mind seeing a couple of quick overs of chin music from Rankin and Broad on Warner followed if necessary by one of Jimmy's forensic examinations.

But Trott and Prior are massive worries with the bat and need to front up and do it bloody fast. I think the sledging of Trott might be an error though, he's got quite a temper and on Blob's point I'd pick him for a fight ahead of Tremlett [who is massive but a gentle giant.] Lucky we have a practice game and what promises to be a flatter pitch at Adelaide to get 'em back into form.

That's a shock. Blimey. He must be exhausted if he's been struggling with stress and everything else that goes on in a tour of this intensity, and that's ignoring his poor form which would only compound it. Hopefully he can come through this as he's a good player.

Not sure where that leaves the side. Presumably Bell will move up to 3 and Bairstow will come in at 6 with Root at 5 but maybe we need the extra bowler for Adelaide. We gave Root plenty of bowling at Brisbane so maybe there was some pre-planning going on there. We might need two spinners at Adelaide - do we risk Monty and leave out Tremlett? If we did that then maybe Stokes would come in rather than Bairstow, as he can bowl a bit.

Anyhow, hopefully poor old Trott's departure will put the lid on all of the verbals and we can get on with the cricket.

Given his test form over the last year, and that they say the problem's "longstanding", I think it was a poor call to take him to Aus. We had this with Trescothick in 06. If they'd left him out of the squad, said he needed to rest and work on health issues, it would have speeded any recovery and avoided changing horses mid-stream. I hope at least they have a contingency plan. I imagine they'll go as you say but suppose they could bring in Compton and put either him or Carberry at 3. I think Bairstow is the better bet based on his performance vs the S African pace attack.

But at least they've acted decisively now. I was very doubtful he could turn things around, just by looking at the way he was playing, and if he had depression/stress it makes it doubly unlikely.

Most important thing is Trott's health; he's been an excellent servant to England and deserves support.

I'm not as bothered as some of you by the sledging btw. Cook wasn't that fussed about the "broken arm" comment though he criticised Warner's remarks v Trott. Warner looks a bit of an arse now - no change really - but he was probably right that they could see something in Trott's eyes if he was suffering stress at the time. I never liked Waugh's "mental disintegration" strategy - smacks of bullying IMO, especially as most practitioners admit they don't bother against the tough guys because it doesn't work, but the answer is to show you're not frightened and they back down.

The correct answer to the "broken arm" stuff is the Devon Malcolm "You guys are history" approach, or Simon Jones vs Hayden at Lords in 05. I want to see Broad stick a couple onto Warner's chest at 90 and then stand over him saying "do you see any fear in my eyes right now?" We'd have a lot less sledging from the Aussies then.

I see Clarke has been fined 20% of his match fee now.
Is sledging worse than that tirade or is it because now mikes are picking stuff up?

I doubt that it is worse than anything else that goes on outt here, it's just that it was visibly kicking off rather than merely verbally and of course the networks woke up and tried to listen in. It seemed to start when Bailey said something from close up and Anderson fronted him up and then that other tosser Watson got involved during a walk past between overs and finally Clarke decided that he needed to get involved when Anderson complained to the umpire. They don't look the most disciplined bunch of cricketers, but then again they are convicts and you have to make allowances.

i wouldnt mind james taylor to be brought in, bowlers seem to struggle getting their line and length right when hes at the crease. I seem to remember him and KP putting together a good partnership as the bowlers constantly had to readjust from 5ft something to 6ft5
