Never Met? 13:06 - Jul 25 with 5003 viewsalwaysrafc

Hello to all stato's.
I was just wondering does anybody know how many ( if any) of the current 92 league clubs, we have never met in a competitive fixture?

Never played the teams below but I'm not sure if that's all of them. We've played the (f) teams in friendlies in the last 25 years.

Nottingham Forest
West Ham
Ipswich
West Brom (f)
Everton (f)
Middlesbrough (f)
Tottenham
Newcastle

I'm sure we've played Middlesbrough in a competitive game. JPT or whatever it was called back in the day?

Wasn't sure on that one although I can remember the fundraising friendly - think it might have been 3-0 on a Friday night and fair play to them for bringing all their stars that night (but no fans).

That was one frightening experience, that game. We lost on penalties.

Have we ever played Arsenal?

I do remember us playing Middlesborough at some point around the time when Tony Mowbray was playing for them

Definitely played Middlesbrough at Spotland in JPT (or similar).

From memory, it went to penalties, Boro fans were in Pearl Street and that's the end where the penalties were taken.

As you might guess, Boro won.

We played Arsenal in the FA Cup in the 1920s or around that time. I think we lost 4-2.

What was the frightening bit, Boro fans causing trouble? Can remember the excitement of a penalty shootout (our first ever?) and Alan Young being so bad it was funny.

Have we ever played Sunderland?

Newport County - reincarnated variety - may also count.

Their fans were utter morons.

They were an insufferable bunch of tossers when we played them in the 97/98 season.

But the North East does, of course, provide the only truly great fans anywhere in the world.

Was that Middlesborough game the first one that went straight to penalties with no extra time? Seem to remember it was a first of some sort

...and while still a non-league club, we were 2-0 up in that game at Highbury. 10th Jan 1920

The match programme was on eBay last year, first time I've ever seen it.

Fergie has famously told the story of him going to watch Gary Pallister at Spotland before he signed him. Think Fergie said it was his wedding anniversary and he took his wife! I'm sure that's the story.

Yes, I lost out in the bidding but I do have the 'sporting news' newspaper, I think it was a weekly publication, for the following week which carries a report of the game.

26,500

Dale had been drawn at home but switched the game to highbury.

Yes nothing has changed much in the last 100 years at Spotland!

That must have been the highest attendance at a Dale game till the record home crowd against Notts Co (f. Tommy Lawton) in... 1949?

Correct.

United didn't sign Pallister until two-and-a-half years after that aforementioned Middlesbrough match.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?
