Unless Jim and the players are able to find a way we are in for another potential bore fest. Tamworth have no obligation to entertain and following a few early season thrashings tend to set up to frustrate, a method that has brought them some success recently and which inevitably works against our slow possesion based style. To avoid the usual depressing sonario against this type of team surely Jim sees the need to start the game hard and fast and keep going forward even if we are fortunate to score early. Wasn’t Ramsey playing a 4–3-3?
The name came from a desire for us to return to wingers, the latter stages of the second Parkin era featuring three midfielders/forwards producing little. Hill then came in and did indeed employ a 4-4-2.
You’re right though, styles and formations evolve. For example, can recall becoming frustrated with BBM playing 4-4-2 for far too long during the relegation season. He only latterly going to three at the back which saw an upturn in results, although too late to keep us up. |
No, definitely just two forwards, i.e. Hurst and Hunt in the '66 WCF
If it'd been 433, two of the forwards would've played in wide roles, even if not the older type of winger, although the system eventually evolved into 433
In the end, it worked because we had a few world class players, plus Alan Ball whose performance in the final coined (i think) the phrase "covered every blade of grass"
Edit: the only true winger in Ramsey's squad was John Connelly of Blackburn, but he never got a sniff during the tournament [Post edited 16 Dec 20:38]

Ramsey had two wingers in the squad in Ian Callaghan (before Liverpool converted him into a midfielder a few years later) and Southampton’s Terry Paine but neither got a real sniff of a regular place in the team.
I remember Brazil popularising 4-2-4 in the early 1960s and had always thought that Ramsey had used 4-3-3 in 1966 and amended this to 4-4-2 in time for the 1970 finals in Mexico.
