It was Clive's theory about Kompany at Burnley, which I think holds water there, given he was never going to stay long. He just wanted a stepping stone. I don't think it's necessarily the case with everyone, though. I think it's more that we've entered an age of managers as coaching brands, instead of personality brands – now they're selling their theories rather than their charisma. Lots and lots of them are all about "never sacrificing our principles" now, so they kind of have to stick by them or accept you're another hack manager who'll do anything to scrape mid-table. (Even Ainsworth was a brand in his own way. He certainly didn't have a Plan B.)
And it's not as though Russell Martin is in with the slightest shot at Liverpool/Arsenal/City/Chelsea/United or even Spurs/Villa/Newcastle. And certainly the managers taking the same line lower down the leagues aren't in any danger of attracting attention from further up unless they're actually winning games, as well as encouraging a 38-pass move between the goalie and two central defenders within their own box from every goal kick. The thing is, Martin hasn't really had to rely on success to climb up to being a Premier League manager. Its been all about his style. Managed MK Dons with a big budget, had them playing possession football without winning anything. Turned mid-table Swansea into mid-table Swansea but played possession football. Took arguably the leagues strongest side up via the playoffs last season. But plays possession football. Who's to say another set of owners won't fall for appointing him on that basis even higher up? Just because they want the style, they believe its the right way to play. |  |

City for example , got what they deserved this afternoon . They were so poor and almost refused to play forward . Teams like Southampton, and nearly every football team in Britain , including us , want to play five a side keep ball and just won’t play forward quickly. Like it’s better to keep the ball in our own half rather than go direct .
When we looked ok earlier in the season was when we went direct to Frey.
Maybe dare I say it but when Pep quits, hopefully teams will stop trying to copy this nonsense and start playing more direct .Pep had huge success and did so much for the game but the need for lemons like Russell Martin have grown obsessed with possession almost more than goals. City are proving that teams have the answer to this style of play now .

Possibly, but what is the alternative ? Long balls forward down the throats of defenders or onto the heads of strikers who can't get anyone in behind because of the off-side rule.
I don't think playing it out from the back is boring, per se. In fact, it has me on the edge of my seat when we do it. Playing it across the back yes, but out from the back, no. In my opinion. | | | |
