This must be the 4th or 5th bombshell from Labour, Pensioners winter fuel allowance, can’t rule out pension taxes and LTA changes, can’t rule out removing the single persons council tax discount and now they are clearly positioning us to expect a significant reduction in the armed forces spending, just when the world is at its most dangerous since the Cold War.

Labour voters on 19:15 - Sep 4 by AnotherJohn | Isn't the theory that this is a catch-up payment to restore the real income of pensioners to its previous level following a period of unusually high inflation? I suppose one could argue the latest uplift may have marginally exceeded the inflation rate, but on the other hand items like food form a larger part of the budgets of lower income-people, and that is one of the areas where prices rose most sharply, disproportionately affecting pensioners. |
I would argue that a pensioners inflation rate is different to the younger element. Normally but not always there is no finance or mortgage payments often included in inflation figures. Heating is probably used more because normally they are at home more. Basics take up a larger percentage of expenditure.

Before Thatcher we had one monopoly supplier for gas and one for electricity. We now have tens of suppliers and both gas and oil. The only reason gas and oil priced are so high is because Russia invaded Ukraine and several EU countries like Germany relied on one monopoly supplier for gas, Russia. Simple supply and demand nothing to do a politician who has not been in power for 35 years. All down to one dictator who is still in power in mother Russia.

There’s a lot of greed added in there though. Profits for the energy companies have never been higher.

That doesn't kick in till next April, there's a Winter at higher energy prices to come before that

Throw in, that if you have even a small private pension you will lose 20% of the £400 netting you £320, the government getting £80 back in tax. Give with one hand take with the other.

But the increased tax burden applies to everyone on account of the previous government freezing the personal allowance from 2022 until 2026 which they then extended to 2028. Not increasing the personal allowance is going to hurt a lot of people. I’d hope that once we’re in better shape the personal allowance is one of the first things this government will look to increase. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Hang on now, prices had risen and services had gotten poor long before the war. And a lot of whats happened is companies using the war as an excuse to put prices up. They blamed the war, then they blamed inflation. Well they've had plenty of time to sort out supplies AND inflation has dropped. Strange how during all this, the war etc, companies have been making record profits and at the same time doiling ut massive wage rises, bonuses and dividends. Meanwhile at Tata, executives got massive pay rises from 16 up to 62%. These big corporations are robbin us blind.

Too many ombudsman are just not interested in looking at the ridiculous bonus being paid in comparison to the service cost provided.

There’s definitely something going on. A couple of years ago the fuel at the supermarkets was always cheaper than the independents, these days down our way it’s the other way around. I called at a garage in Drefach, near Cross Hands last week and diesel was £134.9 which was cheaper than any supermarket and 41p per litre cheaper than a certain filling station on the M4. For us old timers who still deal in gallons, that’s a difference of £1.816 per gallon, or if you’re sticking 10 gallons in it’s a difference of £18.61 which is outrageous. [Post edited 8 Sep 22:28]

Some fair points, but look at the water industry where we still have monopoly suppliers. Thames Water… no debt to £15bn debt all leveraged, the companies are still paying dividend out but expect us to pick up huge rises in the bills. We need to diversify and a sensible renewables programme should be part of it. Any new house being built should be fitted with solar energy, the power generated can be used to provide hot water and generate electricity.

It’s going to take a revolution before change happens….or less people working and paying taxes, otherwise known as Economically Inactive. Once the latter increases past say 12% of the working age population then there will be a bit of a crises on our doorsteps I’d say.

That is just normal. If you have a pay rise you pay more tax. Who is in government is irrelevant.

True. But the state pension is a benifit. Any increase is not a pay rise but a benifit increase. All benifit payments should be paid in full or not paid at all. To say there is a £400 increase is just not true in most cases.

Labour voters on 07:28 - Sep 4 by Dr_Winston | Their window of opportunity for blaming the Tories slammed shut when they axed WFA in the ham fisted way that they did whilst simultaneously committing tens of billions to public sector payrises and overseas aid. Cutting WFA for all but those who need it was absolutely an option, but it would have taken ten minutes of investigation to realise that drawing the line at those in receipt of Pension Credit was a bad idea. In Labours world Pensioners are mostly right wingers anyway so they thought it cost them nothing. Now they're finding out the folly of that decision. Chuck in the fact that people are being jailed for tweets whilst the two specimens who had a big hand in starting that whole situation by breaking the WPC's nose in Manchester haven't even been charged yet and you have a pressure cooker that is becoming dangerously and quickly volatile. That's not even going into the many other areas where they just look incompetent already. Lammy's student politics. Millibands letter to the energy companies, and many more. They're just playing into the hands of Reform, or the Tories if they appoint someone competent. [Post edited 4 Sep 7:33]

At the moment the Industry( certainly National Grid ) is awash with money ,but little in way of joined up thinking , new windfarms are being built but waiting for connections to the grid because consent may have been given for the windfarm but not the substation to connect to and even then the grid system at the connecting voltage isn't robust enough for the new feed. The grid needs updating before more power is added and with Bute energy trying to ride rough shot over landowners even before consent is given then that's slower the process down even more.

I've said for a long time that all new builds should have solar built in. I also believe ALL public building should have solar panels as much as is possible. I used to know someone who said that all big buildings should have channels that direct water to one bg drain which runs through a hydro generator, I don't know hw viable that is but during the wettest months, could it work? How about hydro plants in our main sewers? A lot of water runs off roads and gardens. The corporate goons don't want that though because it takes their profits away which is why our utilities should be nationalised and run for the national good.
