Scouting Analytics - Would this show up? 23:39 - Aug 18 with 2462 views | karlski | It's generally accepted wisdom that most clubs, us included, are leaning into deep analytical scouting to find players. Against Sheff Utd, their first goal came in a situation where Varane ball-watched and didn't track the run of Hamer which was something a switched on defensively-minded midfielder would (ideally) do. I'm not bringing this up to slate Varane or write him off after a couple of appearances at all - he's showed some flashes, he's young in a brand new league with new teammates all played at a pace faster than he's used to - I'd love for him to get up to speed with things here and benefit from our coaching staff. But my question is, would something like his failure to track a runner leading to a good chance (and in this case, a goal) show up in the regular analytics that tend to get compiled? Is that the kind of thing that is/can be measured? Genuinely curious - there are plenty on here who have more insight into scouting analysis, would love to know your thoughts. If it's not something that would appear in the analytics, then I assume it's the type of action recorded by scouts when watching players live/on video?

Data can’t predict a bad day at the office either. It’s not for me to tell you how to enjoy your football club, but you’ll go insane if you question the data every time someone fcks up at football league level.

Whether it's at this level or just higher, players have sensors/chips on them these days as does the ball. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of stuff which looks at distance to ball distance to other players all sorts of things. Picking out the patterns in that and what those patterns mean in a football sense is really the modern day equivalent of scouting. How much of that we have access to I have no idea.
Scouting Analytics - Would this show up? on 07:12 - Aug 19 with 2007 views | stevec | It’s a good question. My take is that data is taken when you’re on the ball rather than off the ball. Would leave a gaping hole in data stats you’d imagine. Have to say, his tracking back method of defending on one of the goals was somewhat bizarre. Thought I was watching the ballet for a moment.

You're right I would go totally insane which is why I try to avoid that! In this instance just using his example to ask a more general question about scouting/analytics that I've always wondered about - not questioning it from the perspective of 'oh why did we sign him', just curious about how this kind of thing works.

I'd imagine there must be off the ball stuff too - as Match82 says above, players are all chipped up and someone is probably looking at patterns of movement etc.... It's all quite fascinating
Scouting Analytics - Would this show up? on 16:46 - Aug 19 with 1424 views | numptydumpty | I am another sad statto on here that finds all this sports analytics quite fascinating. As a cricket fan also used to buy the latest Wisden annuals, back in the day. I know a few on here are qualified in this area and either work in the field or are fully qualified in such fields as data analysis. I would like to know more myself so if anyone on here knows of any data analytics online courses with particular regards to using this information within a variety of different sports, I would be grateful to be pointed into options available. We will probably know more at the end of the season, whether this approach has all the elements required for ourselves to be successful in creating the model we are aiming for amd especially with regards to being long term financially stable as well as progressing as a club in terms of playing style and league positions. Am guessing the human elements are included in analysis but sometimes as they could potentially be much more variable and sometimes based on things that data simply can not perfectly replicate, it's less able currently to successfully consider these issues on a consistent basis. But am sure there is something within the numbers that provide for the allowances required to include this ,and to some extent, in the probabilities of attaining the required results wished for. Losing a runner would be a qualitative matter imo, it would be way too hard to classify objectively or numerically. So your quant would say X wins a lot of duels, good tackle completion numbers, progressive passes, but your qual might be "has a tendency to switch off on his left shoulder" for eg
