Sinfield would have got my vote. I remember when John Arlott presented the trophy, it was the year that Johnny Owen died. Arlott as eloquent as ever made a clear and compelling case for a man from a poor background with an unlikely frame, who had fought for a way in life through boxing to become a household name only to lose his life following events in the ring. Sometimes the personality outscores the sport.

Great post, I remember that day, I was off work at the time, Father told me the sad news and I just took the dog for a walk over Haford Park. Tragic what happened, Pintor was a class act in and out of the ring and got close to Jonny's father who sadly passed himself a few yrs later, I think. Just checked is Dad passed in 2005 after a 9 month battle with Cancer Didn't think he passed 25yrs after Jonny, I really thought he had gone a lot earlier, glad for him that he didn't of course, I think his friendship with Lupe Pintor massively helped him after Jonny's death. SPotY tonight on 21:07 - Dec 21 by Fireboy2 | I've met both Rob and Kevin several times, absolutely top people, gage me and my eldest plenty of thejr time. It breaks my heart seeing what Rob has gone through and i just cannot bring myself to watch anything about him now as it upsets me too much as I've seen him in his pomp, getting smashed by monsters twice his size, getting up and scoring tries from anywhere on the pitch. As for King Kev, what more can you say, he is a living legend for what he has done for his best mate. |
1. That he has not been knighted is shameful. 2. Great player as was Rob whom I saw in their pomp. MND is to me the cruelest of all,if that s possible to say, as the brain is fully functioning so a a super fit athlete knows what is happening and how quickly it is disintegrating . It is more stark,I suppose. I recall Joost van der Westhuisen ,a veritable nasty, superstrong, arrogant super skilled player brought to a shrunken stop and wheeled out on to the pitch with his beautiful kids to accept the applause. Rob Burrow has courage though that is beyond imagination .

John. I hope not but it’s a concern that three very high profile players have succumbed to MND
