January Transfer Window 21:15 - Dec 20 with 67548 views | HullDale | With about ten days until the transfer window opens, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the business we should be doing in January? I’ve tried to pull squad details together as best as I can from memory here: Joel Coleman (permanent, Summer 2022) Jay Lynch (permanent, Summer 2022) Brad Wade (permanent, Summer 2022) Jim McNulty (permanent, Summer 2022) Eoghan O'Connell (permanent, Summer 2022) Jeriel Dorsett (loan, Summer 2022) Sam Graham (permanent, Summer 2023) Max Taylor (permanent, Summer 2023) Joe Dunne (permanent, Summer 2022) Matt Done (permanent, Summer 2022) Aidy White (permanent, Summer 2023) Corey O’Keeffe (loan, January 2022) Liam Kelly (permanent, Summer 2023) George Broadbent (loan, January 2022) Conor Grant (permanent, Summer 2023) Jimmy Keohane (permanent, Summer 2023) Aaron Morley (permanent, Summer 2022) Ethan Brierley (permanent, Summer 2022) Stephen Dooley (permanent, Summer 2022) Alex Newby (permanent, Summer 2022) Abraham Odoh (permanent, Summer 2023) Jake Beesley (permanent, Summer 2023) Josh Andrews (loan, Summer 2022) Danny Cashman (loan, Summer 2022) For me, I'd be looking at O'Keeffe permanently as a priority, as well as trying to tie some of the regular first team squad down to longer deals (Summer 2022 as it stands could see an exodus!) - Coleman, O'Connell, Dooley & Newby would be the obvious contenders. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Broadbent (& maybe Cashman) head back to their parent clubs in January, with maybe Morley moving on for a fee too. Whatever happens, now the club seems to be more settled, hopefully Stockdale will have the chance to continue shaping the squad into his own - with an emphasis on more permanent players coming in. A centre half and a natural goal poacher (in the Alfie / Dagnall mould) coming in and we could really be setting up for a strong second half of the season.

January Transfer Window on 11:50 - Dec 22 by 49thseason | I have no doubt that other clubs will come knocking and expecting to take our best talent for peanuts, Fortunately the shares issue may mean that we can afford to hold out for better fees if indeed we have any intention of selling anyone. whilst we may need another CH, (maybe 2 by summer) and a defensive midfielder, I think the priority has to be to find a consistent finisher, we are making a boat-load of chances that go begging and we need to take more of them to progress. I also hope O'Keeffe will sign on permanently we must surely have been talking to Mansfield about him for a while now? I think the Summer window will see the end of Done and probably McNulty (as a player at least) with maybe Morley and O'Connell leaving too. I would maybe try to sign Dorsett on the basis of his improvement so far and I wouldn't be surprised to see Broadbent come in permanently at some point as I think Stockdale rates him as one for the future. I also wonder how keen Birmingham are to keep Andrews? He has something about him that I think will turn to goals at this level and a possible replacement for Beesley should someone want to pay lots of money for him. The problem with our situation is that we have almost too many promising players in the squad and probably would accept decent offers for most if not all of them, but that would mean another crazy round of recruitment in the Summer. |
Where does Beesley fit in if we get this ‘consistent finisher’? The same Beesley who has four goals in his last two games and twelve for the season before Christmas? Been watching the Class of 92 that has a new series on Sky again. Last season Henderson was their top scorer but he missed so many good chances in the clips shown, plus two penalties. The view about what makes a good finisher at this level would include both players, expecting anything more is expecting too much.

And based on the same logic as 49th sets out, a 'consistent finisher' won't be staying with us for long - then the search starts all over again. Hendo was something of an exception due to his career circumstances. Same with Reg Jenkins before him - it's an age old issue for Dale I think Bees will be staying put, for now at least. He's making progress and that could be disrupted by a move to a higher level. He need only ask Humphrys, who barely gets a start at Wigan

January Transfer Window on 08:03 - Dec 22 by dingdangblue | I can't see any clubs paying transfer fees for 2 players out of contract in 6 months time. Morley and O'Connell won't be going anywhere. |
Why not? Fabio Tavares, Andy Cannon, Joe Rafferty are just a few players who clubs have paid transfer fees for in January just six months before they were out of contract.

It was ever thus and will ever be thus. Finishers are in demand everywhere, I simply think the time to try and find one is when you don't need one. Yes Beesley is doing OK probably better than OK , improving his all-round game, finding the net more often and I have no doubt there will be clubs lining up offers for him, which is exactly why another one needs to been brought in. If Beesley doesn't move on , all well and good you have the benefit of choice, if he does, you have cover. As a club, developing and selling is all very well, but it hinders overall performance when players leave and new relationships have to be formed and even new styles of play developed, but when you have depth in the squad , the effects of selling key players are muted. Strikers are where the money is, as Peterborough have discovered. Being a financial basket case makes you a distressed seller and true value is never really obtained. Did we get full value for Le Fondre, Lambert, Holt, Murray, Henderson, Humphrys? Probably not because finances forced their sale or onward movement If finances permit, we should invest in a striker, goal scorer, call him what you will, it makes sense financially and for the results on the pitch...

Problem is, every team in the country wants goalscorers and there are no guarantees with them. Also, any player who is scoring goals is unlikely to be available, as he's, erm, already scoring goals! Clubs like Dale will generally have to look at players like Beesley and hope he comes good. For every Holt, Lambert, Murray and Dagnall we've discovered, there's Les Lawrence and Jon Shaw (off the top of my head).

Forgot about him! Must be a mistake, as his stats are 6 goals in 55 appearances.

They look more like his stats at Bristol Rovers after he moved on from us. Probably a copy and paste issue from the referenced soccerbase link.

Is Liam Kelly hinting on his Twitter feed that Corey O'Keefe has had a contract offered to sign? Now Corey has returned to Mansfield Town he won't be playing this weekend for them as he is cup-tied from our cup run and they have Middlesbrough. His first opportunity to play for Mansfield Town is 11th January - but Nigel Clough doesn't rate him; that has been made clear. It must be horrible to have to go back somewhere where you have not been wanted when you have spent six months in a happy Dale camp. If a contract has been offered, then it's up to Corey O'Keefe whether he stays or whether he goes. He could however go somewhere else entirely!

Just a bit of fun from Kelly winding us fans up I think. I'm sure we have offered something whether it's good enough for him and what other offers he has on the table, we may never know. Hopefully will all get sorted and we'll know where we stand before the next game. Without O'Keefe and with Keohane injured it does leave us light in the full back areas.

Wise words from Kelly, he was out of work when we signed him. it probably focused him a bit better on the important stuff especially after his seemingly unhappy sojourn abroad.. Maybe O'Keeffe has been chatting to him.

I also think there is a realisation that if you come to Rochdale and do well you won't be at Rochdale long. Aaron Morley is the name catching all the transfer rumours on his stats and performances and he has been here for a number of seasons and has played, developed his career and will have a list of suitors either in January or at teh end of season. Either way the club are going to make money out of him and it is everyone's interest that if he chooses to move on in June then he goes on to do well. O'Keefe has some thinking to do as to if he wants to play and be one of the first names on the teamsheet or go and be a squad player in a bigger environment. According to Soccerbase he's 23 and has only had 61 league starts since starting as a pro. 18 of those have been at Dale in the last six months meaning in the other five years he wasn't catching a first team start. Get this next move right and you might be on the path to be made for life. Get it wrong and you might disappear. That's not just Corey O'Keefe but most young players these days given the lost pathways of academy football. Glenn Murray was 23 when he came here - in October 2006 I think; he left us for Brighton and the riches football has to offer. Grant Holt was 22 when he came here - in January 2004; he left us for Nottingham Forest. The key is to come and be a star at a level you can boss a game; don't get lost in the wash like so many do.

The Colchester and Tranmere stories will have been scheduled to go live today a week or so ago. Read the wording of them and you'll see what I mean. I'm sure there will be more real time updates when people return to work this week.

I'd imagine if another club were to pay a fee for him, it'd be with a view to him at least being a regular in their match day squad... after COVID etc, I can't see many clubs being flush enough to pay money for a player with no view of using them straight away. There are some exceptions, such as higher league clubs buying a youngster and loaning them out for experience (ie Cashman) but O'Keeffe probably doesn't fit that mould. Its also a very unfortunate abbreviation you've used to name him!

As HullDale has said, that scenario doesn’t make any sense. A club wouldn’t buy O’Keeffe in January to loan him out. It didn’t make sense when you suggested it months ago either.
