Match Thread: Rochdale vs Crewe on 09:23 - Jan 11 by AtThePeake | For what it's worth, I would argue that comparing to one similar team to us budget wise isn't always helpful. For every Accrington Stanley, how many teams are there with a similar or larger budget and fanbase that are struggling towards the foot of the division below? There are probably even some that are two divisions below. Accrington are enjoying an incredible season, but they are an outlier and I don't think many fans on here would jump at the chance to have their manager in charge of our club again! I always expected to struggle this season and I still wouldn't expect us to take much from games against the likes of Hull and Lincoln. It''s the manner of some of the defeats against teams that we can clearly compete with that have rankled. That match on Saturday actually highlighted it perfectly in a way - the second half showed we had no reason to be 0-3 down at half-time, but we were due to our own mistakes and our own insistence on a certain style that isn't working. Similar has happened against Gillingham, Peterborough and others. If we go down because we've done the right things but other teams are better than us then I can honestly accept that, but at the moment we're going down because we're insisting on an unsuitable playing style and we're defensively dis-organised and that is much harder to accept. |
Perhaps you misunderstand me? I’m not expecting us to have the same number of wins that Accrington have achieved. There will be times when they don’t convert their performances into wins. However, they are playing to their strengths (evident when we played them earlier this season) and, as such, give themselves the best chance of achieving a result. We don’t. So, to be clear, if we played the entire match on Saturday as we did the second half, and lost, there would be no complaints from me. To suggest anyone would contemplate a return of Coleman or anything like that is daft. He is just being used as an example of a manager approaching games based on what he has at his disposal. A large number who decry expectations against teams such as Hull and Lincoln do so without the additional analysis you provide in your post - ie, no matter how we play against these teams, we shouldn’t expect anything.

And you can add to Accrington saturdays opponents Crewe, just outside the play offs (and Wycombe last season, and Burton before them etc) We are in league 1 on merit, have remained in it on merit and there is no reason why we cannot utilise the resources at our disposal to continue in league 1 if we use those resources smartly. Its not the size of the dog in the fight remember.

Think I did misunderstand you as I think overall we're on the same page here. I just worry that when specific teams are mentioned that certain fans will compare directly to them in terms of league positions and points and that's not always helpful!

What I would say about Accrington is that their squad largely consists of players signed from non-league and Premier League loanees, something which fans on other social media forums decry us for doing! I think it's more to do with how those players are being used rather than where we're recruiting them from and as we saw with Bola, even the Premier League is no guarantee of a successful recruit. Then again, one bloke on Facebook says he watched the Chorley and Marine games this weekend and concluded they have some players who are better than ours. Why do we have 'fans' with that sort of mentality?

To be fair at least he got a copy and paste reply. Any excuse to say the same things over and over and over etc

Mendez-Laing was ridiculous in the second half that day. Took a while for him to start showing it consistently but you could see that we had an incredible player on our hands.

Absolutely. There's no helping fans who decry us for signing players from non-league given the success the likes of Hogan and Dawson have had. As a wise man once said, it's not where you're from - it's where you're at.

The biggest difference that day was Calvin replacing Bunney at half time. He was outstanding that day. EVery thing stuck and he bullied the Southend defenders to shreds . Creating space for others to play in. His finest display in a Dale shirt by a country mile. Edit: I think Bunney scored the first so not a half time sub. But Calvin was on before NML. We played that second half like a cup tie. [Post edited 11 Jan 2021 13:07]

Calvin replaced Tom Kennedy at half-time. Bunney played the full match and scored our first goal in the 63rd minute. NML and Michael Rose also came on at half-time for Jamie Allen and Peter Vincenti.

I wouldn't be too concerned jwru, i've been mistaken so many times over events during past Dale fixtures, after a while (apart from really obvious stand-out events) they just become a mishmash Only a few months ago, i was about to perform a lobotomy on myself after one such mistake but decided that my avatar would take the hit instead!
