They play in different positions so Washington wasn't picked ahead of him
Both can & have played wide as well as upfront & Smyth is being portrayed in this thread as a ten goal a season player in Division One. That makes them reasonably similar.
I don't know, but I would suspect that Washington WAS selected in preference to Smyth.
Certainly, Washington's international performances would come into that decision rather than club form, but maybe our expectations of Smyth are higher than those employed in the game?
Very frustrating - seems like the kind of thing a club that had 3 or 4 strikers on its books might do. Which we are obviously not. They're obviously seeing or not seeing something in training, but how he couldn't be thought of as a young player that can do a job running at tired defences in the last 20 minutes baffles me.
In 2017-18 Smyth played 4 games for the under 23s, in 2018-19 he played 7 times scoring 4 goals. So it appears no one has had any faith in him since he joined.

That 17-18 season he was in and around the first team for half of that season so wasn't going to play many under 23 games.
