Roque Mesa 19:22 - Dec 23 with 23790 views | biggar | Surprised at a lot of these comments on the above. Apart from one daft bit of play in the first half I thought he was possibly our best player. For the life of me I just cannot understand the amount of people slating him. Bizarre. I don’t need a trip to specsavers so god knows what game some people were watching.

Nah, a good player, but not a good water carrier. There is no point having a water carrier if you don’t have creative players for him to feed.
Roque Mesa on 00:47 - Dec 24 with 2521 views | Giff | He is a reactive player not an instinctive player, Leon in the same position was instinctive. Mesa needs to see a situation developing whereas Leon was almost there before it happened. Also, when Mesa receives the ball he has to look around for options, Leon knew where the players were and could offload far quicker.

Only one player I ever heard get called a water carrier and that was Deschamps during their golden era.It really meant an average player who busted his balls for the cause in a team of superstars who hed simply pass to, or so I thought at the time. So yeah pretty much what you're saying I think.

Someone called Deschamps that dismissively and it kind of became adopted as the term for a player who breaks down opposition attacks and then gives it to the more creative players. So yeah, average is probably a bit harsh, it’s an important role in teams that play it and takes a lot of skill, in terms of reading the game and being in the right position to intercept/tackle, as well as a lot of endeavour. Aside from that though, your understanding of it is the same as mine.

I’ll tell you fecking why so many people love roque Mesa, he is by far our most passionate player and most determined player on the pitch, you watch his reaction when we scored the goal today he was jumping to the crowd jumping on the players and going mad. Our team lacks passion and leadership and he’s by far Swansea’s best player and he will be key for us when we actually have a fecking CAM

Problem with this point is that he is playing with players at the moment who are constantly hiding. Today he was the only midfielder who was wanting the ball in the most pressurised position, and he was at times telling Clucas where to run while he was in posession. He is our best midfielder by a country mile; and at the risk of sounding like the 'Box Office' clown, if you can't see that then you will never understand it.

On the ball he's good, agreed. Off it he's weak and can commit the odd fatal error, which is what's stopped him playing more. It not good having a screening player who the opposition can brush past without breaking sweat. But he does give us a different option. I like him, but he's not exceptional by any stretch of the imagination.

Some truth in that but Leon was playing in a better side, although maybe not with better players. The long and the short of it is that Mesa is supposed to do the Leon job as that's the sort of player he is. Time will tell if he is adequate - I somehow doubt anyone ever will be, but one thing is for sure is that he is not a coward, in what is the most cowardly Swans team I've ever had the misfortune to witness.

You don't know what his role is and you don't know what a water carrier is. A team like little old Swansea paid big bucks for a water carrier, it's the most dumbed down position on the field, a bang average player can play the role, fill a space, pick up a loose ball and give it to somebody with ability for them to make something happen. The guy has not even been up to playing the easiest role in the team yet, whoever picked Mesa and Clucas for the money they cost , is it a moneyball guy that knows nothing about football ? I wonder....hmm - have you seen the ages of those two players ?, have you seen the club's and standard of football they had been playing ?, the position on the field they play ?, the price they paid for them ? Shocking by Swansea city.

He’s a deep lying playmaker. If you want to use extreme examples, he’s more similar in style to Pirlo than Makelele or Deschamps. They were water carriers. Kante would possibly be a modern day example, though he does a bit more offensively. Just for absolute clarity, a water carrier needs creative players around him, without that, his role is redundant. He also needs to be supremely fit, to read the game well and be positional astute when out of possession. Quite why you think that’s Mesa completely baffles me. The rest of your post is just padding waffle because you’ve realised you’ve been talking nonsense.

Tim I think you ought to leave this one. So far Mesa looks like a decent little player that hasn’t really done much to write home about. In his limited playing time under Clement he’s shown the occasional glimpses of a ‘player’ being in there somewhere but overall he’s been nothing but average.

You think Mesa is and I quote ' a deep lying playmaker ' You think he is similar in style to Pirlo You are having a giraffe, Pirlo had over hundred caps for Italy and won a World cup and a few Champions League's and played for Inter, AC and Juve and scored (he had the ability to take a free kick) and created goals from his deep lying midfield position. Mesa had two seasons only in the top flight in Spain with a small to yoyo club, it looks like he was 26 before he even played a game in La Liga. Whoever thought it was a good idea to spend so much money on such a player with his age and background I would like to know.

Roque Mesa on 23:38 - Dec 23 by trampie | Mesa is no Deschamps and Deschamps was nicknamed the 'water carrier'. A player that gets the ball and gives it to a player of ability like Zidane. You don't understand my posts because you don't understand football. |
Oh I'm sorry. I didn't realise your grasp of the English language was good enough to include footballing terms that I've never heard of. That granted then, you called Mesa a "water carrier" (a term you used go disparage him with) . And then go on to describe Didier Deschamps as a water carrier (but the implied term being more favourable). So from what I can deduce so far you are saying that Mesa is rubbish - because he doesn't have Zidane playing in front of him?
