The First Bookies Favourite Has Emerged For Southampton Manager
Monday, 16th Dec 2024 12:52

Russell Martin probably hasn't finished clearing out his locker at Staplewood but the bookies have already compiled their books and a clear favourite has emerged, but will it be the one that the fans want.

Familiar names are on the short list at the bookies to replace Russell Martin and of course David Moyes & Graham Potter appear high on the list, as does West Bromwich Albian manager Carlos Corberan, but it is a familiar figure from a few years ago who tops the odds list as compiled by oddschecker.com

Topping the charts is former Saints assistant manager Danny Rohl, he spent around 8 months at St Mary's as the sidekick of Ralph Hasenhuttl, with whom he has also worked with at RV Leipzig before leaving Saints in August 2019 to take up a similar position at Bayern Munich.

There he was assistant to Hansi Flick and when Herr Flick left in June 2021 to take over as the German International head coach, Rohl again joined him as his assistant, they both held those positions until September 2023, when Flick was sacked.

Rohl was not out of work for long and he was appointed Sheffield Wednesday manager in October 2023 and he turned the club's fortunes round and saved them from the drop, this season they currently sit in 9th, just 5 points from the play off spots.

You can get 5/2 odds for him to get the Saints job.

Next up at 7/1 is Carlos Corberan followed by 10/1 David Moyes and 12/1 Graham Potter, although most bookies have them at 5 or 6/1.

At around the 14/1 mark is interim manager Simon Rusk, Ole Gunnar Soljskaer & Steve Cooper

After that the odds go out a bit, former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is as low as 14/1, but mainly at 20/1 alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard, Michael Carrick.

I would imagine that Rohl is at the top of the list because of his previous connection to the club, but I would suggest that would have little real impact at St Mary's, given that no one in charge at the club these days was there when Rohl was Ralph's assistant.

So the big question now is how much pre preparation have Phil Parsons and his board been doing, how much sounding out of potential replacements for Russell Martin has been going on and just who is their favourite out of them.

The Southampton fans would want a proven big name so that would mean Moyes or Potter, but I suspect that Rohl & Corberan might well be who Saints first look to.

We can afford to go into the Carabao Cup game against Liverpool with Simon Rusk at the helm, although it is a shot at glory and we could have a good chance in this game due to the feel good factor that will be in St Mary's after the debacle on Monday night against Spurs, we really do need to have a permanent man in place for the trip to Fulham on Sunday.

None of the above

Get a tenner on a well known foreign coach currently without a side

Lousy time to get rid of Martin - although they probably had no choice. Caught between an appointment for this season with an almost zero chance of staying up & planning for next year in the Championship.

Are the likes of Potter & Moyes really going to be interested given our predicament? We were in a stronger position when RH left & the best we could come up with then was Jones.

Wouldn't be unhappy to see Rohl back. Or I hear there's a bloke called Selles making a name for himself in the lower leagues.

Danny Rohl could be good. He was the man behind Hasenhutti when we played well. When he left Hasenhutti and the team when downhill

Rohl is a sideways step , if he comes the clubs going nowhere … Ralph’s doing pretty good without him these days

Surely the Board will be wanting a manager that plays in broadly similar pressing style? Otherwise we risk lacking direction once more. Moyes is not going to give that (might as well have Alladyxe or some other old school manager back in).

It was not so much the principle of the style, but rather the (stubborn) application of it! Get somebody in who plays the Southampton way but with tactical flex.

To be honest I would feel sorry for any one of the contenders as our new manager. The squad is so large and Martin's favourites so divorced from most other people's choices (which would include many disillusioned expensive signings) that it will take an eternity to sort out the mess. All a new manager can do is abandon Rusball, choose experienced defenders and reinvent the theory that in order to score goals you need to have more than one player in the box! The players need to clear thier minds of Martin's nonsense and play with energy and to their strengths. God knows what difference this will all make but oh what a relief to see the back of Martin - that fact alone must be worth a few points at least!

The sensible move for me now is the longer term prospect and Danny Rohl would fit the bill, accepting we are almost certain to go down whatever happens.

A Moyes type appointment would likely want a big January transfer budget and anyone that remembers Redknapp knows this attracts mercenaries on high wages that don't care and ruin the club when relegation happens.

Its no longer just fear of relegation that will put people off, the main problem now is that established managers will not want their names forever associated with a club heading for a record low PL points total. Much as I like Potter he's turned down more tempting offers.

In our current position it would be extremely difficult to recruit who we really need. So lets see who is interested in a club, in relative freefall and staring at the lowest points total ever?
They'll need a big ego to think they can avoid that!

Block8, it seems like the perfect candidate would be José Mourinho.
