Will Saints Sign Any Free Agents Now The Window Has Shut
Saturday, 2nd Sep 2017 10:03

Last season Saints signed a player after the transfer window was shut in the person of Marten Caceres who was a free agent, will they look to this market again ?

There are many Saints fans who felt that Saints could have brought a player or two more to the squad and indeed the club themselves indicated they hoped for at least one new face before the window slammed shut on Thursday.

On the whole Saints squad is strong and personally I think that we have depth in all positions, but there is perhaps some scope for an extra man to come in if he can improve the squad.

There are still some decent players to be had not signed to a club after the window so is there anyone out there we might consider.

One name that would be familiar would be that of Rickie Lambert, after being released by Cardiff he is a free agent, but as romantic as it would be for SRL to return to St Mary's and the fans who truly loved him, he has not shown any real form since leaving Saints three years ago, i'm his career effectively ended when he joined his boyhood heroes and as he approaches 35 he is not up to the rigours of the Premier League even as an impact sub.

Giuseppe Rossi is a free agent in Italy spending last season on loan from Fiorentina at Celta De Vigo, he had a mixed season there scoring 4 times in 18 appearances, but he ruptured a knee ligament late in the season, the latest in a series of injuries and there are doubts as to when he might be fit again.

If Saints feel that they need a bit of insurance in the centre of defence in case Virgil Van Dijk continues to play silly buggers then there are a few options still without a club.

Joleon Lescott has left Sunderland and although but he suffered injury issues last season and barely played and at 35 would perhaps be no better than either Yoshida or Stephens, likwise Kolo Toure.

One that might interest Saints though is Jan Kirchoff at 26 he is still youg enough to realise the potential of a a career blighted by injuries that at one time looked certain to see him win a full International cap for Germany and saw him sign for Bayern Munich.

Able to play as a central defender or defensive midfielder he joined Sunderland in January 2016 and played a big part in their great escape from relegation, blighted by injuries last season he barely played last term as the Black Cats were relegated.

Just a few of the options that Saints could explore if they wanted to add to the squad although I feel from this list only Jan Kirchoff would be worth considering and perhaps Rossi if he was fit.

So are there anymore free agents out there ? If you know any let us know in the comments section below.

I'd sign SRL just to have him on the bench to call upon for pens. The nerves cannot stand Tadics stepping up and hitting a back pass. Still think for last 10 mins SRL could have an impact and it nice to sign songs about him rather than the crap about the skates.

Cacres must have cost a world record for just one game.

Marcin Wasilewski a big strong central defender who has recently turned out for Leicester could be useful

I would have lambert back if not just to show are attacking players where the net is in training and to show tadic how to take a pen

Rickie is one of the top 3 goal scorers in league football since 2000. Unfortunately I do not think he can teach our present strikers how to hit a football like he did. That's called talent.

Entire article founded on the false premise that Saints have any free slots in their 25 man Premier League squad. They don't. Can't add anyone who isn't U21 before January window opens.

Unfortunately I think VVD is costing us more per game than Caceres did.

As I understand it, Saints can sign a free agent but they can't actually play for the club before the next transfer window opens. Selling Fonte in January freed up a squad place for Caceres but, like everyone else, I have no idea why they signed him and left him on the bench.

If the Saints squad is strong and we have depth in all positions why would we need any new signings? By the way Nick, when you evaluated the squad strength were you looking at the correct list? It was Saints was it, and not Man U or Chelsea?

One who comes to mind is Ibrahimovich even if he only ran up and down the touchline for a few minutes each half it would scare the proverbial out of the opposition.

pete_boggs, Nick has a habit of making outrageously bold statements that always come back to haunt him. It gives him a great chance to deny that he ever said it! That's why we love him of course.

As far as I'm aware Josh Wright is still a free agent have left Gillingham as Captain last season after scoring 14 goals from midfield - OK in league 1 but he's still only 25 so could be given a chance...he left Gillingham because the current manager didn't want him but more likely an excuse to offload their top earner. A good player.

Do we really need another defender/DM? As you say Nick, if Rossi was fit, then maybe, but only on a small salary + bonus for appearances. That way we are safeguarding ourselves against paying somebody else to spend their time in the treatment room.

If we're talking back ups, shouldn't we get one for the manager too?

Don't we have any academy players on the horizon that are good enough to warm the bench? Isn't that the 'Southampton way'? Or has the production line well and truly dried up?

Well, we had Gallagher and inexplicably sent him out on loan again, as we did with Seagar and Olomola.

@pete Boggs. The reason caceres was left on the bench was due to the form of Stephens and yoshida. I don't know why people still don't get that. Count the number of clean sheets they had and you will get it.

I doubt it, we were shipping goals for fun with those two when Carceras was sitting uselessly on the bench. We will never know the Club's rationale for ignoring him having gone to the trouble of signing him but it smacks of politics, money and narrow minded self interest.
