Saints Face Reality Of Losing Top Spot
Saints Face Reality Of Losing Top Spot

There will be one chant missing when Saints take on Leicester City on Monday evening.

"We're top of the league"  has been the most sung chant by Saints fans over the last few months and its also been used by some to try and shout down those who have expressed concern of any kind during that time, the only real surprise that we are no longer top though is just how long it took for anyone to catch us up and overtke us.

However the removal of Saints from pole position even for just over 48 hours could be just the wake up call that the team needs to get itself back on track for a very important pair of matches coming up in the league.

Hopefully now many will realise that promotion is far from won, indeed we have thrown away one very good chance to pull completey clear from the chasing pack, we dont want to throw anything else away, apart from the complacency that seems to have developed over the past two months both on and off the pitch

Its setbacks like this that make or break seasons, strong teams use them to make themselves stronger and in doing so ensure that minor setbacks remain just that, we will now see what our manager and our players are made of, if some of those must win games back in November and december had been won then we wouldnt be having to "Must Win" against Leicest to go back top of the league

There's nothing wrong with being realistic, but considering not long ago we were facing the prospect of not having a team to support, there's no harm in reveling a bit in the success we've had so far this season, what are people supposed to chant? Is a fan base that supports a team that have been top of the league for a number of weeks supposed to subdued? The article comes across as a bit smug.

Of course, self appointed chant approvers regular users of this site who have taste seem to think it makes you a mong to use certain chants or songs, so none of this would apply to us...

Just sing "We're going up " until we score the first goal. Then we can revert back to " We're top of the league " Simples

Why is it seen as a 'setback'? We've not played, which at this point is the only reason why WHU are top. If we' had played on Saturday and lost to enable the Hammers to gain top spot, then it would have been a setback!

I think I am beginning to to understand how it all works now.
If we had won those games in Nov& Dec we would have had more points on the board and we would'nt need to win on Mon day to retain top spot. Brilliant!
Now why didnt I think of that.
Your expert assessment of the situation is invaluable.
As for complacency on and off the pitch, do you know something we dont ?
I have always felt that everyone connected with the club had given 100%.
OK, we havent won every game but there isnt a team on the planet that can or will.
we could blame tactics, injuries, having an 'off'day or even just bad luck but not complacency.

We all ought to know Nick by now. In automatic promotion spot and he is still moaning. Over halfway through the season and look where we are. I think at the beginning of the season most of us were hopeful we might at best be in a play-off place.Just enjoy it ffs and see where we are at the end of the season.

Everyone tells me how great Nicola and his ambition for the club is, then the moment i spout his mantra about being first and not tolerating failure, people start having a go at me.

Saying we have been complacent is actually being nice, if everyone connected with the club has given 100%, then we have some serious problems on the basis of the current form over the past two months, I prefer complacency myself.

Lets have a winning mentality rather than the attitude of "we are lucky to be up here we would have settled for 10th back last summer"

We arent 10th we are 2nd lets get back to being top

You're getting your knickers in a knot. We've had injuries and a loss of form but it doesn't mean people haven't been giving 100%. Are you saying Saints are a failure? This is a joke.

Its a tight league. The dream of remaining top for the rest of the season although not completely out of the way is not a position to demand.
There are some very good teams in and around us. They are going to play they're part....thats fine...enjoy. But more importantly believe. There are very good reasons! COYRs!

I dont think anyone hasnt been giving 100% we have just gone through a sticky time, I dont think its injuries, Chaplow has been long term, but he wasnt in the side at the beginning of the season when we won all those straight games.

We cant just call it a blip though it stretches back two months, lets hope we beat Leicester and Cardiff and then we will be back on track

Have to say I agree with both sides on this one. Nick I agree with you that although exceeding expectations we now need to make the most of our position and push on for a possible title winning campaign. And there is no denying that our recent form has been poor. That said I don't think it's down to anyone giving less than 100%. Even teams on successful campaigns have bad results here and there, it's what we do about it that is most telling. Let's see how we raise our game in the next two home fixtures and how successful the club are in the window. I still have total faith in NA and NC.
