Have to say I felt emotional about this news.
Anything we can do to help his family would be a fantastic idea. Earnings in the game were nothing back then compared to now and I'm sure it would be appreciated, and It would also be nice for his family to be reminded of how much he was loved at QPR.
I have never, in all my years of going to Rangers heard anyone say a bad word about him.
A TRUE Legend.

Was thinking the same thing. Would be very fitting to a true legend.

Why retire his shirt? That doesnt sit well with me, what happens when Marsh or Bowles die? Eventually we'll retire the who squad range.

Poll: Are we staying up?

Rather than rushing to name things after people, why not learn some lessons from how McDonald was treated at QPR in recent years and build a real legacy from that. I think Dave Thomas said in interview semi-recently that the way ex-players are treated at Everton and QPR is like chalk and cheese. Perhaps we could create a hall of fame, or something like Everton's 500 Club, and start treating our ex-players a bit better.

I've never really been keen on the idea that a shirt number should be retired, it's more important that those who wear the same number thereafter understand its history and value and what they are representing and hoping to emulate and surpass.

But McDonald has been one of the stand out players in our history and deserves some kind of recognition for his services to the club. Like what Clive/Dave Thomas touched upon, there's a bigger picture that needs to be addressed. I've always said that we should treat our players as our own, no matter how good or bad they are, no matter how much or how little they play - but that is also the responsibility of us as fans too, not just the club.

If a club looks after its own properly then you'll find it attracts better players with the right attitude more often, and then everybody wins and is proud.
