Stoke to be a major aerial threat to us. 07:58 - Apr 30 with 2556 viewsfreddieeddie

For a while now on here I've thought people just seem to think 3 points against Stoke is a given.I actually have thought for a while a draw is maybe best we will get and then defeats against Chelsea & City. I think we are really going to struggle at set pieces massively. Look how Hill was beaten by Terry on Sunday. Ferdinand is not the most dominant either. Paddy Kenny is not the best either at claiming a ball in a packed area. I think Stoke are gonna really put us under some serious strain at the back and I can see us conceding a couple. Dealing with Huth, Crouch, Wilson, Shawcross etc is gonna be a seriously tough ask. Our pitch maybe suits our style to playvthe big teams but it could work against us V Stoke.

The problem with playing a high line is that we're so desperately slow at the back.

That said, I agree that the 5 man midfield we've been using won't be of any use against Stoke. Plus we need goals. We should play 4-4-2, with Zamora and Cisse up front and a midfield of Mackie, Barton, Diakite, and Taarabt.

I don't think anybody has taken the points as a given, it's taken as a given that we will need to win the game to stay up.

The problem we'll have this Sunday is our game is all about sitting deep and soaking up pressure and possession. Stoke don't keep possession and sitting deep against them will just invite them to play basically a flat front four and bombard us in the air.

To beat Stoke you do what QPR and Newcastle did against them in the first half of the season.

1 - You double up in wide areas. We played Hill and Traore down the left, Young and Mackie down the right. Newcastle played Guttierrez as almost a second left back with Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor as the full backs. The effect of this in both games was to take out the only players Stoke have who can actually play the game - Etherington and Pennant.

2 - You hold a high defensive line. Crouch, Jones, Walters, Sidibe, Jones, Fuller - lots of physicality here, not a lot of pace. Take their wide men out of the game and they're exclusively a long ball and set piece team, hold a high defensive line and these long balls are either pumped into the space behind you for strikers too slow to catch them or won in the air 40-50 yards away from your goal which is fine.

3 - Pass the ball when in possession. They're unfamiliar with it, it makes them uncomfortable.

cant see us beating them. draw at best as we will have to commit ourselves, as there is way too much pressure on one game.
and we need 4 points anyway. as there is no way Bolton are gonna lose all their games!we made an utter bllx of it yesterday.

I've said it before...That Crouch won't fancy scoring and sending us down..Surely. He'll save himself for the Bolton game to score a few and play well and give Roy a hint for England...

thats the straw I'm clutching anyway...

Agreed.

In their last seven away games they have harvested just 2 points.
They are the joint lowest away goal scorers this season: a mere 11.
Before the point at hopeless Villa and their easy crushing at the feet of Newcastle they looked particularly gash v Wigan at the DW on 31st March when their back four that day of Wilkinson,Shawcross,Huth and Wilson were almost comically shyte. The second goal they conceded was horrendously pathetic in an already-gone-on-holidays-knackered-by-long-euro-campaign vein.

We'll do 'em.

True that, but we made them look awful last time, we were playing some good stuff back then, WTF happened?

We were indeed superb away to Wolves, Stoke. Never looked like we'd be relegated then. And that was obviously without Cisse, Zamora, Taiwo etc. Powers that be were saying we were set up as a good away team, couldn't win at home.

WTF happened indeed. P!ss.

I'm still blaming Lee Mason, Bob Pollock, Lee Probert. And that greasy pr!ck Briatore.

The key to this is to make them scuttle, so we need to play the ball on the deck quickly and keep them moving and rotating as much as possible, which will play on their lack of agility in their big physical players.

The way to do that is to play lots of square balls and short straight ones forward, so lots of sets and inviting players forward to support.

We did a good job on them earlier in the season at The Britannia, so I am hopeful we can find the right kind of performance here too.

I don't think anyone believes we CAN'T beat them. Problem is our recents wins were achieved by harrying teams playing football. Sjoke don't play football and when was the last time we won a true battling game?

This has got to be a real test of Hughes' tactical ability. I think it's fairly clear how to play against them personally, as Clive has outlined above basically, which has been proven time and again by other teams.

However as noted our successes under Hughes have come from a style that simply won't work v Stoke with the way they play, it'll just encourage them and play to their strengths. So if he sets up with the same system I will be extremely disappointed.

I wonder whether it might be worth starting Cisse and Tarbs up top rather than Zamora, with Mackie and Traore wide. As suggested mackie and traore can effectively curtail their only real threats, and IF we seek to play it on the ground then Taarabt's possession retention and Cisse's pace against them lumbering defenders could be the answer? However equally we may miss Bobby's hold up play, so I'm unsure on that one. Thoughts?

Zamora is too profligate, i think we'd be better off with Cisse up front and Adel behind him with Traore on the left.

Bobby was anonymous at Chelsea and i'm pretty sure he'll be off to Anzhi or Quatar as soon as the transfer window opens.

If you put Taarabt and Cisse up front then we won't win a single ball all day long. You need Zamora there to bring the others into play.

Or Heidar??

Come on, the guy's our best aerial threat and plays (when not offside) with a whole load more heart than Bobby bloody Z.

On a side note, I hope Crouch gets a good reception, or at least not booed.

You're wrong. The Luftwaffe was what I call a major aerial threat.

Sorry, but the three points from this game and preferably another 3 from the other is a must if we want to stay a Premier club and rub shoulders with the mighty Stoke, Swansea and Norwich. We need to make sure that all who are involved with QPR are at LR ready to nail this lot. Beating a mediocre mid-table team at HQ should be achieveable with any stretch of the imagination.

No excuses please

You would have to bet on us over Stoke in this game given that we beat them away from home. That game they bullied and bullied but couldnt score enough.

Like all of the recent results I think whichever team scores first will win the game.

I think that's a bit unfair. Bobby's game is all about controlling with his back to goal and then laying off for runners.

Against Chelsea our midfield were consistently caught in a half-way house - too concerned with what was behind them (Torres, Mata, and a defence having a collective nightmare) to get forward, but conscious that they were a goal down and needed to get forward. Combine that with Derry and Buzsaky's lack of pace, and the end result was that there was no fluidity to our play - they were all trying to do the right things, but were consistently in the wrong place.

And it's not surprising, in that situation, that Zamora was completely anonymous - he was being asked to field long balls played at his head (which isn't his game anyway really), with no runners to lay it off to.
