Was talking to an old team mate recently about where have all the wingers gone which morphed into a discussion about how every team seems the same in the modern era. No 4-4-2, no wingers who want to skin their fullback to get in a cross just endless passing sideways and backwards to keep possession. Particularly noticeable in international football. I’ve watched every World Cup since ‘78 and I every game saw a contrast in playing styles - Dutch “total football”, British teams playing a high tempo 4-4-2, South American teams with their fast transitions but now it all seems so bland.

Are wingers becoming extinct? Not while we have Smythy 😉

And 'proper centre forwards'. You have Kane and Lewandowski types getting big moves and money late into their careers because that sort of forward is increasingly rare.

I spoke to Les about this a lot when he was at QPR and he said basically every kid in every academy now wants to play "ten". They don't want to get in the box and get on the end of stuff and sniff out chances, and they don't want to be bombing down the line crossing the ball. They all want to be 'ten' because that's where the 'ballers' play.

I'm lost, every team is the same now because they don't all play 4-4-2 with wingers? I must be watching a different game. The tactical diversity in football is wild these days.
