During his 42 day spell as manager of Leeds Brian Clough told hs players not to worry about Stan Bowles when they played Rangers. Match score Leeds 0 QPR1 Scorer Bowles

He was such a fan of Stan that he bought him later in his career from us, even when it was obvious that Stan was clearly on the decline.

He obviously then signed Stan later so I think he had a high regard for him. Stan's thoughts were different though with his famous quote that when he was at Forest that they communicated by rumour because Clough was rarely at training. Fantastic manager though.

And they famously didn’t get on - hence the brilliant ‘communicating by rumour’ comment by Stan.

Though he alienated him at Forest by playing him out of position, telling him he was just there to supply John Robertson, and then banning him from Robertson's testimonial if memory serves. Stan's opinion of Clough was that he was overrated and had little involvement in training. (Mind you, he said that about a lot of people, including Trevor Brooking, who was a better and more consistent, if less entertaining, midfielder, though it sticks in my craw to say so.)
