If 'parents' cant afford to feed their kids they shouldnt have them in the first place.

Where's daddy ? bookies, pub or banged up again ?

Its child neglect if you cant feed your kids, so turn off netflix, sky sports, buying endless tattooes and actually get a job. I do some work at schools and see teachers feeding pupils their breakfast because parents havent. Total disgrace

Instead of bashing the country you live in Ian - perhaps you should take a little more pride in it?

I don't think the UK is 'stuck in the past'. Infact, we're a very progressive, outward-looking society. We lead the world in many modern fields!

And what's wrong with thinking the UK should have a "special" place in the world? Why not? We gave the world the steam engine... the tin can... the rubber tyre... the internet... the electric motor... cement... the telephone... the TV... the bicycle... tanks... railways... and 20% of the world's population speaks English!

Mate, why should anyone feel that they have a “special” place in the world? We are all born equal are we not? The problems of humanity come when people think they are “special”. The sooner that we get it into our heads that we are all “special” and no one country, religion, race, creed etc is more “special” than others the sooner we will have a better and more humane world.

I’m sure many leavers still hope for a market deal , but with sensible terms similar to those offered to Canada etc.
Sadly I don’t hear any remainders discussing the inherent financial weakness of the EU, the concerning undemocratic appointment of the senior commissioners ( eg Juncker) and its huge unaudited bureaucracy plus the lack of a long term immigration plan which currently requires paying countries eg Turkey to fix that problem short term.

Maybe we better abolish the World Cup, Olympic medal table, and all other international sporting events then? As that must just be fuelling nationalistic division.

Why should anyone feel guilty about thinking their country is "special"? Why is that wrong? You can love your country & still sing its praises for all the right reasons I gave above. I refuse to believe that being patriotic is a crime!

As for humanity (seeing as you mentioned it); no one in the world respects humanity more than the British who are famous for it!

Is Southampton football club more special to you than Portsmouth football club? Think carefully how you answer, because according to you, we are all equally special. I can tell you now that Southampton Fc is a special club and is more special to me than any other club. Likewise, I live in one of the best countries in the world. I support a special team in a special country. Am allowed to say that SFC and PFC are not equally special?

I could give 100 more examples of where your dream of socialist utopia, is just that: an unrealistic dream. It wouldn't work, that's the point.

It should have been obvious that my post was not ‚bashing‘ the UK, it was focused very clearly on praising what a fantastic project European integration has been. (And that’s not to say the EU is perfect, but I am talking about the wood not the trees).

It is extraordinary to me that so many in this country can’t or refuse to recognise this and my comments about being stuck in the past etc were an explanation of that mindset.

When I think about this, I immediately remember being in Southampton city centre pre match and some sort of ‚leave‘ or UKIP group had a stand and were handing out leaflets. At least 3 of them were dresses head to toe in Union Jack clothes and were standing there waving little flags.

Utter planks, and you‘re not telling me that they are not representative of a good part of the anti-EU mindset.

We have a lot of things to be proud about in this country, but thinking that we are better than everyone else isn’t one of them.

There is a huge difference in being “proud” of who you are and of your heritage and believing that you are “special”. If you are not sure what I mean, just look at the KKK or the Nazis for people who believed that they were/are “special”. Then compare that with the likes of Martin Luther King who was “proud”. Granted, these are extreme examples, but I am sure that you get my drift.

You can go back as far as you like Chesham. Hitler used used the terms of the treaty in his grab for power. No Nazi Party and there was less chance of another major conflict in Europe. You may not agree that the EU has been a conduit for peace within its tenure but others would disagree I think.

Whilst I freely admit I’m not right all of the time (as if!)in this case I am. You can twist and turn as much as you like, but the fact is the EU is just a cherry on the cake of what was achieved before.

In footballing terms a 6 yard box tap in with all the hard work done in the lead up to the goal.

Your error is to treat the EU as completely distinct from what's gone before. It's all part of the same integration project and therefore just as important as everything that went before.

Like talking about a great goal but treating the final tap in as completely separate from it and irrelevant.

I’m not sure what your point is Chesham? If the EU has grown out of something else, taken those ideals and grown them into something more substantial, isn’t that a good thing? To use your football analogy, if you were a top six club, why would you decide to leave the others and go it alone with no idea of where you would end up? If you had just landed from another planet and someone gave you a list of the major economies in a certain part of the planet, wouldn’t you find it odd that one of thought it a better idea to go off on its own? It’s not as if we are super special and gave something everyone else wants (unless that something is a glut of baristas).

Why would a top 6 club decide to leave and go elsewhere? Really? Have you not been following Liverpool and Man U's plans?

I'd question whether the EU has grown into something 'more substantial' - whilst in many ways it is terrific, it is also a bureaucratic, monolithic, anti-competitive, corrupt, jobs for the elite clique.

Whilst you might not like it, the world is made up of a wide variety of countries and some stand out more than others. Everyone knows the French 'brand' for example - it's immediately identifiable. There are perhaps 20 countries in the world which stand out in this way. Brazil and Australia being two and within Europe Spain, Italy and the UK (and others). So yes, compared to some, we are 'super special'.

Rather than putting the UK down as having nothing to offer there are in fact any number of things we do that everyone else wants - the creative industries, legal system and financial services for starters, which collectively no-me else really comes close to.

As for 'going off on our own' the UK is no more doing that than Canada, Switzerland or Australia.

Canada, Switzerland and Australia have never been members of the EU so not sure what that has to do with it.
You say I don’t like it that there are many different counties so I don’t think you have been reading my posts properly. I love the fact that there is so much diversity on the planet. What I don’t like is when one group of people say that they are “special” and deserve “special” rights. We are no more special than any other country on the planet.
Yes I agree that there are some things we are good at and my comment about baristas was (slightly) tongue in cheek. But, sadly, the things that we used to be really good at have mainly vanished now and we don’t make much that the world wants to buy anymore. Such is the downside of closing down industries and becoming reliant on service industries. Even London is now seeing their precious banking businesses disappearing off to the other side of the channel.

You being too quick for me today, Chesh. Don't follow your point, I'm afraid!

Simple really: How special are we compared to continental Europe. We're both special but which is more special. Only one way to find out...

UK v Continental Europe (EU or otherwise).

Here's another one:

It’s simple Sogs. Compared to many other countries I think the U.K. is Indeed special. You clearly don’t.

You Seem to think we’re a run of the mill place with a bland character of no significant merit - a Latvia maybe, or perhaps a Tunisia or Belize?

In my view we’re one of the few countries with a worldwide reputation and are therefore exceptional. You may not like that or possibly be ashamed of it, but that’s your right.

Exactly, we are obviously "special", as most of the world risk their lives to get here! Why don't they stay in France? England is one the best countries in the world. Why? Because we are not at war, we have the incredible NHS, we are inclusive, tolerant etc. I have been to India, USA and other places, where poverty is really extreme. Health care is the USA is expensive and unfair. There is dreadful poverty in many countries. Russia is intolerant, racist, homophobic and so on. We certainly are lucky to live here and we should stop doing the country down. I say to those who say we aren't special, try living in Russia, India, USA even and then say we arn't special. The NHS for example makes us special. British and proud. A Saints fan and proud.
