To be fair to BBM and Irish signings, Dooley , Keohane , McLaughlin were no his signings, O’Connell and Ryan where and they have been good.

And McShane.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

I didn't watch the game last night, but can someone explain why the passing out from the back is getting such a hammering in specific relation to this game?

To me, both the goals on the highlights appear to come from set-pieces/crossed balls into the box.

Like both of the goals we conceded against Gillingham. Like the first goal against Wycombe. Like the goal Accy scored against us. Like the winner Gillingham got against us. Like all three goals Fleetwood scored against us.

It's been our problems for seasons and seasons and it still costs us one or two goals every single week.

Ours also came from a set piece by the look of it. Lovely run by O'C to get clear of markers and be first to the ball.

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

Last night was a game we didnt want to lose. We are in a position where it is almost as important to stop teams in our part of the table from winning against us as it is to win the game ourselves. We could have started with O'Connell, Mc Shane and at 1-0 brought on McNulty as an extra defender for MJ. If Jimmy K was getting the run around, Matheson should have played the 2nd half.
We need a negative game as well as an attacking one, going 5 at the back and then hitting long balls to Wilbraham and Hendo with Rathbone coming in behind them may not look pretty but might have got us 3 points last night. Taking off Ryan in his current form looks like a big error.

The problem with consistently conceding late goals it starts to become a mental issue - the players start to become anxious waiting for that final whistle to blow they just start making bad decisions. Even before Keohane's rash challenge last night Rathbone made a hash of clearing the corner, his miss kicked clearance going straight to an Mk Don's player. O'Connell for some bizarre reason decides to rush forward chasing the ball - he's now out of position and isn't where he should be to try and clear the up and under which is launched back towards our box. A bit of pin ball and a blocked shot then leads to the Mk Don's player running at Keohane and drawing the foul. With a clear head Rathbone either clears the ball properly or even keeps possession by running with the ball away from our box - maybe drawing a foul himself. It's all just so avoidable.

The problem is that whilst it certainly is a mental issue, given the amount of scrutiny and scouting which goes into any opposition before a game it will be harder and harder to overcome. It happened with set pieces, and then Joe Bunney, where an obvious 'weakness' was targeted. Teams playing us will know they can be patient and go at us in them last 15 minutes where the mistakes are most likely to come.

Having just been back to review the whole match the irony is that in the first half we were playing better than we have done recently passing and moving the ball well and defending in an organised calm manner. Most significantly Lynch was very rarely playing short balls to defenders but clearing the ball upfield towards Hendo and Smith pushing the opposition back making them build from deep.
Second half begins and MK Dons presumably following a dressing down at half time by their Manager come out and not surprisingly up the anti, pressing with more speed and aggression. We almost immediately start to show signs of panic and confusion with miss kicks, poor passes and poor decisions. Added to which we also inexplicably start to revert to tip tap across the back with Lynch suddenly opting to pass short to defenders who are now under pressure, instead of helping relieve the pressure with an upfield clearance.
The question has to be asked was this sudden second half change back to tip tap passing the result of managerial instruction or are the players simply lacking the ability to make sensible decisions when faced with real pressure. On the face of it one has to suspect it is the latter because it seems beyond comprehension that the Manager would change the first half formula.
Worryingly it seems clear that over the course of the season this group of players regardless of who has been on the field have shown a tendency to mentally freeze and become physically overwhelmed when faced with an aggressive in your face approach which most teams in this league can adopt when necessary.
By the end of the match without a calm head to steady the ship this had happened again and we had completely lost the plot and were playing out of control football. This was guaranteed with our record of conceding rather than scoring late goals led to us inevitably making another cock up and losing the match.
When considered overall it adds up to a worrying prospect for the games to come when we will surely face stronger opposition than MK Dons.
