Team Selection Stability Needed This Week

There aren't many Saints fans who will disagree with the fact that ultimately our rotation policy wrecked our Europa League dream, now we need to concentrate on winning a few Premier League games with a stable line up.

There was a feeling on Sunday that Claude Puel had rotated his side to play Middlesbrough, it is unclear why Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand did not play, but the fact of the matter is that they should both have done, yes harsh on Sam McQueen who had a decent game, but now is not the time to rotate the side.

We have had a wobble in the Premier League that has seen us struggle to score goals and lose two games that we really should have got something out of at Palace and Hull, the reality was that we did not play badly at either of those teams, but in both games lost it in a 2 minute spell that saw us concede two goals in each game.

This has badly dented our confidence and that has shown in the way that we are not as free flowing going forward and this has led to us not scoring as many goals as we should have.

Now we need to restore that confidence and to do that we need to play our strongest side at both Stoke City and Bournemouth and get back to doing what we do best and that is dominating games and finishing off sides when we have the chance.

I am still of the opinion that our issue is not the loss of Pelle and Mane's goals but our failure to create chances for other members of the team to score and ironically I think the loss of Charlie Austin whilst taking out a big chunk of goals scored could mean more chances made.

Claude Puel now has to play either Shane Long or Jay Rodriguez up front and whilst both probably don't have the ability to score as many as Charlie, they do both create more for other players.

Puel now needs to utilise that and field a stable and regular line up over the next month in the Premier League, we need to get points on the board and move up the table and quiten the rumblings in the fan base and to do that means a solid side.

For me the goalkeeper and back four picks itself, so there is no need to keep switching and creating uncertainty, likewise in the centre of midfield, the strongest trio on current form is Romeu, Clasie and Davis, this should not be tinkered with, in our rotation policy we have lost a little urgency, that comes from knowing that if you play well you keep your place and it is yours to lose, not from knowing that however well you play you are going to get a rest.

Sometimes you have to give players a break, but in the main every player in the squad should want to be picked every game and indeed should have the right to be if he is the best player for the shirt.

We have to create that competition for places that in turn spurs players on to their best performances and that is why we have been lacklustre of late.

Up front it is a little different in that attackers are switched around more to suit the game, but at the back and in midfield we need to create a stable foundation to build on.

We have two crucial away games this week, we need to be at our best in both of them and it is crucial we go to Stoke and put out our best team and get a result, that will instill confidence in the side and in turn we need to go to Bournemouth with confidence.

So the rotation policy had its place, ultimately it was overused and cost us dearly in the Europa League, we do not want that to happen in the Premier League, we are in a crucial period and have a virtual two week break after travelling to Bournemouth, there is no need to rotate the side this week, it is points that we want to see.
