Player Review 13/14 - Nathaniel Clyne Thursday, 15th May 2014 11:58 A mixed season for Clyne in that although at times his form was such that he was talked about for England, at others he couldn't get in the team. Nathan Clyne can be satisfied with his season apart from one area and that is the number of games that he played, of course he missed some through injury, but his problem was that he is now vying for the right back squad with another outstanding youngster in Callum Chambers and they shared the starting line ups almost exactly half with Clyne just about shading it with 20 starts. After returning from injury Clyne had a spell of good form and there was talk about him being a wild card for the England squad before Xmas, then came another injury and Callum Chambers came back into the side and showed what a talent that he is as well. Nathan came back late on and perhaps was very close to a late call up for England, however I think ultimately he fact that he to and throughed with Chambers counted against him. The difference between the two was that Clyne is better going forward and creating whilst Chambers is a little stronger defensively. Next season will be interesting for Nathan, will he be able to retain the right back spot or will Chambers be preferred, its going to be a tough decision for the Saints manager, although with talk of Chambers being used in a more central role there might be room for both of them. One thing that did surprise me this season is that given our lack of width, that Mauricio Pochettino did not use both in the same side at times, deploying Clyne in a more forward role with Chambers behind, this would have offered us different options but was sadly not used. Still a good season for Clyne 7 1/2 out of 10, although you do feel that if he had kept injury free and hadnt also had to play second fiddle to Chambers at others then it could have been higher.
