Is it the DoF? 08:46 - Sep 19 with 6810 viewsMalintabuk

Possibly done to death but surely there must now be a question of the philosophy in the club
It has been mentioned that we have not been able to defend under whoever is managing us, there have been a few recently and they can't all be incapable of organising a defence.
So do we need to look at something else. I always thought that the DoF should be the ethos of the club, regardless of which manager is appointed the DoF will ensure continuity.
Is our DoF in some way responsible for what seems to be a culture of non defending
I have never been in the camp of Les must go, but there must come a time when his employers are thinking why is this not improving, why are we not progressing and still making mistakes and not being organised.
I think every fan knows that we are not in a great place talent wise, money wise. We do have a few decent players and should be safe, but is that the bottom line for us, now to every year make the same mistakes and hope that we cling on?
Or is it time to not get rid of personnel, but to at least look at is what we are doing correct?

Yep agree

Isn’t Ramsey’s job to oversee all of the coaching at the club? The same coach who also couldn’t manage a team to defend if his life depended on it

Ramsey doesn't oversee first-team coaching. Warburton does.

No it’s not he couldn’t coach a defence with Clint hill & richard dunne in the side and that’s a fact ,
He oversees the whole coaching set up does he not ? , our junior sides were getting thrashed the other week , the game of football is not just about number 10s and playing out from the back
You defend first as a team
i keep hearing how it’s the players fault now, funny how I don’t remember that being the narrative when JFH and Mclaren were getting pelters for their team conceding goals
Your basically saying that it’s got nothing to do with the coaching staff how the team defend all they can do is keep doing what they are doing and hope the team keeps their concentration

How old were Clint Hill and Richard Dunne at that stage? Their form was patchy particularly Dunne.

He may 'oversea' the club coaching but it's difficult to know exactly how much input he has at any level. I would say it is probably more organising the structure of the coaching. It's doubtful if he takes first team defensive coaching. However, we don't really know.

Our junior side getting thrashed has been discussed and the consensus was the result if not the main issue, the performance is. They move players up the age groups much faster than the grade 1 academies. So not only were they playing against more highly rated players but older ones.

It is the players' fault if they make individual errors. Fact!

Weren't you one of the main protagonists for throwing pelters at McClaren, JFH, Ramsey and others after a poor result or two.

I didn't say it had nothing to do with the coaching staff. I said they are working on it but the players are making errors, so they need to keep working on it.

Part of the philosophy was to develope players and sell for profit, thats starting to occur, paying lower wages etc, the actual defending I think is more Warburton and his coching team than the DOF in my opinion, the overarching development of the teams overall seems more the DOF.

IN many ways though this is simply the age old debate of what is a DOF (more common till recently abroad) than here in UK.

Warnock being of the old school wasnt and isnt a fan, seeing himself as the manager answerable only to the chairman/owner.

The sale of Eze was used (and correctly I think) as an example of the strategy of developing and finding young players from elsewhere maybe released, and developing and selling for profit and make the club more sustainable, over ageing and more expensive "star" types we went for before hand.

That's a really stupid comment about Chris Ramsey.

Is it his fault that players make mistakes on the pitch? That they sometimes lose concentration, or a beaten to a ball because an opponent who knows the play they are about to make, reacts a split second before him and gets there first? Or that players new to the team are going to take time to adapt and their form may be patchy?

The same points also apply to the DOF, Manager and all the coaches. They do their jobs and the players make errors, so they work on it and try and correct it but it goes wrong. We are having to shop for bargains, they inevitably aren't perfect.

the team were pretty good defensively and average/poor going forward when McClaren was manager under the same DOF so not sure our current defensive record has a lot to do with him.

What Ferdinand has brought in has been a chance to look to develop younger players which will always bring with it naive mistakes in games but I very much doubt he is keen to see us continue to concede this many goals

No. Absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the director of football.

A defence with Clint Hill and Richard Dunne?

Just to be clear, that's the Clint Hill and Richard Dunne who at the time had a combined age of 71. God bless em both, but by that point they were being done for pace by the mascots in the warm-up, and you blame Ramsey for them not being a good enough pairing for the Premier League?

As the original poster has said this topic has been done to death. I fully admit this is a bit of an overreaction but we’ve just conceded three goals to a newly promoted side. I think it’s a bit of everything. Ramsey is the head coach and questions need to be asked of him when defending is becoming an immutable problem. Clearly there are differences between Warburton and warnock and Les is tasked with finding players who fall within the financial plan and for every rough diamond there’s plenty of pebbles. That said the reality is we haven’t got much quality and anything that shows quality is quickly talked about in terms of potential revenue BOS being the current topic. Meanwhile we’ve got a 35 year old captain who lacks a bit of pace and a keeper that frankly must be surprised at his own selection. I could go on but this is a whole club thing.

Not sure how any of that can be traced back to Ramsey either. He is not head of first team coaching and the only current first-team player to come through his underage coaching unit is Kakay who's sound enough defensively.

Complete over reaction to one defeat - as per.

'Cling on' - 13th is NOT 'clinging on' - no where near relegation last season.

Not just premier league but the championship as well and he had Nedum , Perch, Angella , to call on
Still Ramsey & Les are pretty much Teflon on here so we will leave it there

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I don't think they are Teflon, PP.

For instance, I agree with you on this point. I don't think Ramsey worked out as our Manager. Just didn't go well for him at all.

I generally just wanted to look at things in the club
The post was not an over reaction to one defeat at all.. it was the lack or the precived lack of addressing the defence and why we just don't seem to be able to defend

Just a reminder that the champions of England (who were almost champions even before lockdown started) also conceded three goals to a newly promoted team. At home. Yes, they won, but then we're a mid-table team that lost its three top scorers, not a team with Mane, Salah and Bobby F up front.
Klopp must be quaking in his boots!

Bare bones.
