Grimes and Fulton
at 09:30 3 Oct 2024

"Grimes was very good as always"...is this sarcasm? Apart from the two key moments he passed the ball straight to a SU player resulting in an attack on our goal...and the "free-kick" at the end?

He was dreadful against Bristol too.

But seemingly un-droppable.

As already discussed, it's hard to do this when the squad is as thin as it is, but sometimes it's healthy for players who have become "auto-picks" to get a game or two on the bench to remind them there is competition for their positions.

Ronald is a prime candidate, I feel he is resting a bit on his early-promise laurels. All he currently offers is work-rate, which is not enough.

Grimes is the other obvious candidate but we all know he is seemingly un-droppable. I don't like to criticise our players generally, but his terrible performance needs calling out. Bullied off the ball too easily, slow to get back, no vision - how many times I could see Ronald, Franco and Vip waving their arms for a ball over the top and he hesitated before playing a sideways pass to Tymon.

Given he has the lion's share of our overall possession, it just is not good enough. How many other teams in the Championship have one midfielder who plays this possession-hogging, slow, zero-threat "quarterback" role?

And don't get me started on the two corners we had near the end where he failed to beat the first man TWICE, and didn't even have the humility to apologise to the team.

He is Mr. Consistent - consistently playing at 70% of his capability.

I sometimes consider handing my Swans card in when I see Grimes walking the ball out of the box in the 89th minute when we need a goal.

He was dreadful today, totally outclassed by his opposite number.

A final word for Vigs who was excellent again.

To be fair he needs a look in the mirror.

How many times have we tried to preserve a 1-0 lead and failed because we don't give the opposition anything to think about.

Why persist with Abdulai on the wing when we needed energy in midfield (sorry, but Joe is past it)? Why bring on Key who looked good, but pair him with a knackered and crap Ronald?

What did Peart-Harris offer that Vipotnik wasn't? At least Zan was trying to link play a bit.

Yes, we don't have strength in depth but we are still trying to put the good pegs we have in the wrong holes!

Excruciating!

I let out a little strangled cough when Cooper scored the 2nd...

...but I also realised that I could shout "come on City" and no-one would know the difference .

Certainly glad I made the trip up from London and survived sitting amongst the Coventry fans!

Hoping to make Luton and Watford away this year too.

MPH, Bianchini and Vipotnik all did their shooting warmup in front of us on Saturday.

Three observations on Zan:

1) his general body language is sort of languid, he doesn't move naturally well, and frankly looked gassed just jogging about (I am sure he wasn't, he just looked like he was)
2) he fluffed a lot of his shots
3) he got visibly annoyed with himself for 2) so at least he looks like he cares and knows he can do better

I will be there! First game in a few years...unfortunately I will be in the home section with my Cov mate who got us tickets. I will be cheering internally for the Swans.

T-Joe I get, he looks out of his depth. But Pedersen and Abbey, a totally brand-new CB pairing expected to get comms 100% right between them etc. Feels harsh.

Abbey fell asleep for the goal but I thought he looked ok otherwise. Not his number one job, but I like Pedersen's keen-ness to move the ball quickly - he seems to take one-touch and pass, as opposed to HD and BC who seem to like 4 or 5 touches and take their time by which point the oppo have re-grouped.

Grimes is a "play the percentages" player. At the back of his mind in that moment, he would have a nagging thought that he needed to retain possession and not risk losing the ball via a shot that could potentially serve up the ball to the opposition. Which would then hurt our possession stats .

Some of it is coaching (it feels like Ronald is the only player given carte-blanche to go out and try something different), but most of it is the natural instinct of the player.

Žan Vipotnik : Agent urges caution but there is a link to the Swans
at 09:14 2 Aug 2024

Oh don't get me wrong, the proof will be in the pudding. But the stats and reels suggest he knows where the goal is and he seems to have a bit of swagger about him.

You could make an argument either way on the promise, but I will stay positive until proven otherwise .

You could flip that on it's head though and say despite playing for a crap team, he still managed 10 goals and 3 assists from 25 starts (37 games in total inc. sub appearances - who knows if those sub appearances were 30 minutes or 2 minutes).

That's one goal contribution for every 2 starts.

I'll take that as a base to start from...

I wasn't so impressed with him, thought he was a bit sloppy and he basically gave up for the 3rd goal didn't even bother attempting a sliding challenge and their player just shot across goal easily.

Irrelevant though, as he was not on the retained list.

The Official Blackburn Rovers vs Swansea City Match Thread
at 12:53 2 Mar 2020

I am not sure if you were present at the Fulham game but I was and struggle to relate to much in your post.

There was an element of dog in our midfield but that dog was similar to a spaniel that likes to chase thin air or it's own tail. The way Fulham were able to by-pass through and around our midfield was very similar to how we did this under Potter less than a year ago.

Our front 3 spent most of the match chasing balls pumped into the channels - I guess you could call it lively as they chased hard but rarely got on the end of the % play. I didn't see the back 4 of the oppo being pegged back, particularly Bryan who got forward a lot and helped run Naughton ragged.

But worst of all was the inability to switch the play. Every single goal kick was clearly practiced - loft it to the left wing and hope Bidwell or Ayew could knock it down into midfield. I think they won maybe 10% of those headers and could count on one hand the number of times the 2nd ball fell to a Swans player. Fulham would attach and either Joe or Ben would put in a last minute block / foil. Rinse and repeat for most of the match.

Yes Fulham pressed high and put their forwards tight on Joe and Ben to reduce the short outlet but there were several times we could have been braver and Woodman could have chipped a ball over their heads into Grimes / Fulton, or distributed quicker before Fulham could reset.

None of this pointed to a team that was "set up to win" as Cooper likes to suggest.

So I am not sure what this upward trajectory looks like.
