The Southport attack and Starmer

There will be a big target on his back from the day he goes in. Lifers will be queuing up to stick a shank in him.

Prison is not going to be fun.

Overrated. One World Cup and a couple of other trophies. Plenty of players have achieved a hell of a lot more.

Good player but nowhere near worthy of being mentioned alongside the likes of Pele, Messi and Ronaldo (both).

And today’s stabbing murder is 12
at 23:37 22 Jan 2025

I wish I could agree with you.

I've been in meetings with prison education people who have done their level best to provide excuses for their failure with rehabilitation. I have genuinely listened to someone explain why people in prison can't be forced to attend literacy classes.

The obvious response to that is "Bollocks! They're in Prison! You can make them wear pink tutus all day and read nothing but JK Rowling if you want to. That's the point of prison". Sadly the idea of forcing people undergoing custodial sentences to do anything is a non starter to those involved in such situations.

We don't need to increase prison capacity. What we do need to do is ensure that only people who the public need to be protected from are imprisoned.

Far, far too many first time or non-violent offenders are given jail time when community sentences are more suitable. Prison should be reserved for violent or persistent repeat offenders.

Why isn't Kyrell Wilson on the bench?
at 22:34 22 Jan 2025

There are no benefits to be gleaned from giving Wilson or Nzingo first team opportunities as things stand. After a game or two of struggle no doubt a considerable number of idiots would start blaming them for it just as they have Vipotnik and Bianchini even when it's obvious that the problems lie elsewhere.

Best leave the pair of them in the u21's until Williams is gone and we hopefully recruit a coach who has the vaguest understanding of how attacking football works.

If we must keep International Football, I quite like the idea of reducing the amount of it. Certainly a situation where one Nation politically can submit four teams is nonsensical and should be ended.

Why is it so hard getting immigration numbers down?
at 21:47 22 Jan 2025

Yes, people pushing the "the gap between rich and poor has never been bigger!!" guff tend not to care about fairly obvious evidence that they're talking total bollocks. Tell us something that we don't already know.

I am fairly confident that the current gap between rich and poor is significantly smaller than it was when, say, William the Conqueror was worth the equivalent of £230bn and the local serfs were shitting into their local streams, or perhaps during the Victorian era when 10 year olds were being sent up chimneys for a living.

This nonsense is easy enough to say on social media and there's plenty of people out there who will believe it, but in reality it doesn't stand up to more than about 20/30 seconds of actual investigation.

A massive clampdown on abuse of referees at all levels. Maybe making the job less masochistic will entice more talented people to want to be one.

Absolutely. Any attempt to restrict wages would have to be Global.

US Sports can get away with salary caps because there is no alternative to playing them in the US. Football doesn't have that luxury.

How about we keep a salary cap, but any new owner of a football club should be allowed to lodge a sum of money as a bond, say £100m, with the FA and spend as much of that as they like (total value of contracts count against the total) until the money is depleted/replenished?

That way the club is not on the hook for any losses as the money is already guaranteed, The FA can be confident that nobody will go bust, and the interest earned on the sums lodged can be reinvested back into grassroots football.

Yep, which makes Labour's reponse to it idiotic.

They've got every opportunity, much of it justified to point out that much of what happened took place on someone else's watch, but they can't help themselves.

What changes would you make? I'm talking dictator, top down control to do what you like. For me it'd be:

1. Swap football to the Summer. It's only played in the Winter now because people needed something to do when there was no Cricket (everyone else copied the English). A Feb - October season would be great. Most of the season played in warm weather.

2. Champions league should only be for Champions. Have a lesser competition for teams finishing in lower places. Reintroduce the Cup Winners Cup.

3. Remove FFP, but have a Global salary cap which affects teams rather than players. For example, Erling Haaland can be paid £500k per week, but Citeh's total wage bill can't exceed £200m. It'll be a nice battle between total squad strength and keeping star players on board. and should reintroduce a bit more competition.

4. (Might catch pelters for this one) End International football. Give it ten years and nobody would care that countries don't play each other any more. Maybe then a club World Cup would be worthwhile. Plus it would render FIFA completely pointless and that could never be a bad thing.

I certainly don't obsess over things like I used to. I was never the type to go to many away games (even then I liked having alternate Saturdays available to do other stuff) but the idea of missing any home games, especially league ones would have horrified me.

I've missed two already this season with at least one more (Coventry) to go and I'm not all that bothered about it.

Losing at Norwich is likely if not almost certain, all of which makes giving him that much more time a strange call to make.

We're gaining nothing by keeping him around at the moment.

I was being sarcastic.

Obviously Labour (and their media attack dogs like James O'Brien) are desperately trying to spin the narrative on this one to the availability of weapons as opposed to the fact that this kid was known to be dangerous for months, if not years before he did what he did and nobody did anything.

O'Brien's piece where he links the attack to Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk is barking mad.

Where's the new signings?
at 16:36 22 Jan 2025

Point three is certainly the biggie for me. Committing money now on players Williams wants would likely be just pissing it away. Given the previous comments about not wanting to go down the loan route perhaps that is having a serious re-evaluation.

Couple of decent loans and maybe the odd free agent to see us through the season. Keep most of our resources for the new guy in the Summer.

I think marketing is an issue to a degree. We don't offer any serious incentive for purchasing season tickets other than generally sensible pricing, but something along the lines of what we did in the Sousa season, i.e. offering a free PL ST in the event of promotion might convince a few.

Likewise serious work needs to go into growing South Stand attendances again. It's expensive taking a family to games, especially in the current climate and even more so when you're as boring to watch as we mostly are. I'd be pricing all under 18 ST's at £50 wherever in the stadium they may sit, hospitality aside.

Time and time again we've seen forwards blamed for their lack of goals when the service they receive is non-existent. Last night Bianchini made at least half a dozen darting runs through the Sheff Utd defence and the pass never came. When we play Vipotnik he battles about as well as can be expected but again, gets almost nothing to attack.

I wouldn't be forming any kind of serious assessment of any of the forwards we've utilised since this time last year until we've seen them under a coach who doesn't think that attack is something that you use to put posters up.

At least they're clamping down on online retailers. That's a sure way to prevent anything like this ever happening again.
