New York Dolls front man, and the last surviving member of the band. Often described as punk or similar, they were not of course. They were a band along with the Ramires who the likes of the Clash and the Pistols regarded as influences.
Promoted and managed by Malcolm McLaren who brought them to the UK before Punk. Morrissey ran their UK fanclub. Described by Whispering Bob Harris as ' Mock Rock' on his Old Grey Whistle Test...probably not Bob's best moment. Very important band to what became the 1976 Punk movement. On a personal note I quite liked them but I agree with John Lydon in saying, we already had Glam Rock in the UK and along with Bowie there were plenty of androgynous looking groups. Still innovative and controversial in their day but like a lot of the NYC bands got involved in the Heroin and drugs scene.
