Surviving October 7th - BBC 2 Tonight 18:22 - Sep 26 with 2507 viewsAnotherJohn

A gripping and deeply moving documentary will be broadcast on BBC2 at 9.00 pm tonight, and is already viewable on iPlayer. It is the story of how a large number of socially-liberal young people attending a peace and love festival were murdered by terrorists.

I'm surprised at the lack of interest in this. It contains some of the most graphic first-person video I've seen in any documentary, as well as some deeply tragic personal stories. The combination of video, maps and interviews gives a much better picture of what happened in and around the Nova festival when Hamas attacked than I had before.

I read the synopsis and couldn't bring myself to watch it.

I'll give it a go on the weekend when I'm a bit more awake and can do it justice.

In a way the similarity of these victims to people we know - or even ourselves when young - made this documentary all the more poignant. The young people were there having a good time, many under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and suddenly men from a completely different world arrived and punctured that bubble of peace and love. The ones I could not identify with were the Hamas gunmen chivvying each other up as they departed Gaza on motorcycles, and smiling as they killed. Many of the Go-pro style video clips came from them. The film brought to mind the comments Mel Stride and Angela Raynor made recently about there being nothing to take offence over when pro-Palestine protesters shout Allaha Akbar. Anybody seeing this documentary will feel a shiver down their spine if they hear those words said in anger - they were repeated so many times in this killing spree.

I saw some of the footage on breakfast news including some filmed by Hamas. It made for uncomfortable viewing and I have no wish to see even more of it.

Hamas are rabid animals but what Israel have done in return is abhorrent. What's happening out there is awful and it appears to be spreading, with what's going on in Ukraine it looks like the world is heading in a bad direction.

Obviously it is a personal decision if people prefer not to watch documentaries that record horrific events. Personally, I always think examining additional data almost always aids understanding, no matter how uncomfortable it may be to view those data.

It’s frightening that there are people out there who think Hamas are the good guys.

Do you recall the immediate reaction to the terror attacks of 9/11? As expressions of shock, condemnation and condolences came in from around the islamic world and all the good people of that faith, the Palestinians of the West Bank Gaza and East Jerusalem were to be found dancing in the streets cheering and celebrating like they had just won the World Cup.

Most of that was staged and falsified by our wonderful free press.

Israel had a lot of sympathy after the Hamas attacks. That has now gone and been replaced by revulsion by most decent people

I have watched such programmes, plenty of stuff about the Holocaust, the Irish potato famine and the events that caused it and prolonged it, the treatment of native peoples in the USA, Australia, India and on the African continent.

I don't need to be reminded how evil, twisted and sick humanity is, I think I understand that well enough.

My God, that was a powerful documentary.

I only hope Israel stick to their word and obliterate Hamas from the face of this planet. Pure evil.

There are questions certainly, but at least we do not have throngs of protesters on British streets chanting “Am Yisrael Chai”. Personally, I do not accept the argument for full equivalence, which some are hinting at.

Think a country that sees assassins literally running into a country, smiling as they blow away men women and kids tends to elicit sympathy
Just as well I’m not in politics as we would already have had a nuclear war and I’d be posted this crap from the dust bowl in the sky .

It's like the scenes in Baghdad of locals pulling down Saddam's statue was staged.
