Non-League 22/23 10:24 - Jul 2 with 46037 viewstoboboly

Thought we could have a season long non-league thread, I know a few people on here are keen on groundhopping.

After Hillingdon Borough cancelled last minute last week I am heading to Raynes Park Vale v QPR XI today. Not a new ground but always good to make a ground tick "hooped" by watching QPR there.

Anyone else heading to a game today?

Picks from the draw for the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round for the 6th August.

Godmanchester Rovers vs Rothwell Corinthians
Yorkshire Amateur vs Charnock Richard
Redcar Athletic vs Seaham Red Star
Tadcaster Albion vs Tow Law Town … nawty!
Punjab United vs Balham
Hallam vs Bury AFC
Trafford vs AFC Liverpool …. Sky Soccer Sunday?
Tadley Calleva vs Wincanton Town
Hereford Lads Club vs Hanley Town
Hereford Pegasus vs Stourport Swifts
Cobham vs Tooting & Mitcham United
Roman Glass St George vs Tring Athletic

They’ll have to rearrange one of those Hereford kick-offs or there’ll be chaos.

Winners of each tie get £1,125.
The winners in May get £2,000,000

Losers of each prelim tie get £375

… and a bag o’ chips.

Good choices Danny, but I'll add these to them if I may.

Lower Breck v Penistone Church
Bugbroke St Michaels v Long Buckby (a pity that it's not against Boldmere St Michaels)
White Ensign v St Panteleimon
Brimscombe & Thrupp v Fairford Town (the Brimscombe pitch looks lovely if you drive past it)
Baffins Milton Rovers v Alton
Torpoint Athletic v Millbrook (Cornwall)
Falmouth v Saltash

The last two are selected as they are Cornish derbies. The other ones that I've not commented on are because I like the names. One of the best ways to choose a team!

Up For the Cup with Brimscombe & Thrupp! Great selections there Terry.

Loving those Cornish derbies. I once played against Falmouth Town. I had a few games for the Penzance first team. I wasn’t taking football so seriously back then and was training with the reserves more for a laugh plus it was local and then I was called up. To this day I still wonder there must have been another reason for this … possibly most of the first-team regulars had gone on a stag-do, or a batch of infected pasties had laid low the local male population, or with it being so long ago most of the men of the town were busy repelling the Spanish Armada. Anyway I’m proud to say I played a few games deep within the Cornish sarcophagi of the non-league pyramid.

I see Mousehole are in the draw too … away to Barnstaple Town. I used to love a rumble in the Trungle. (Mousehole’s ground being Trungle Park - although now they’ve come into money I’ve heard they’ve got designs on Penzance’s lovely old Penlee Park)

By coincidence I saw Finchley & Wingate in the FA Cup last season losing to a Kent seaside team (can’t remember which one). They have a curious looking stand on one side of the ground. Seen better days but a bit 1930’s Art-Deco lido in style.

Yeah it's a decent main stand, not in too bad nick considering it was built in 1930 - grade-two listed as well, donchaknow.

I always thought ‘Football Lads’ was a euphemism for hoolies.

Does Hereford not have any trouble-makers of its own?

Tomorrow heading to Beaconsfield Town v Kingstonian. Going to be a bugger on the train, ko moved from 3pm to 1pm to alleviate heat issues but imagine it will be just as hot.

Anyone else heading to a game tomorrow?

A good local draw is North Greenford Utd (decent side) away vs Bexhill Utd. Tie has been moved to play at Eastborune Borough FC's ground which is a great little stadium.

I'm mentioning them again, but the Bedfont Sports v Chesham United match has been moved to 10.00am kick off due to the heat.

A possible double header available for you?

Surprised about Walton casuals, Staines has been on the cards for a while, they used to be very good and a big loss to the area.

Son in law was at Casuals last season - now moved to Walton and Hersham (who play at the same ground). Shame that Casuals only option is to fold as they’ve been around a long time. Have to say that when I look at the money that’s going around and the attendances, I can’t quite understand how the financial model works without chairman essentially proposing up the club. Problem when the chairman decides he’s had enough is that there’s no safety net

Problem for Casuals was two-fold wasn't it? They don't get food/drink profits cos the stadium is owned by someone else and they had very few paying fans. Throw in a Southern League travel cost and you're in big trouble very quickly.

Cheers Terry, two problems - I have already ticked off Bedfont Sports (decent ground, good scoreboard) and I am on the train to Beaconsfield so no way of getting that distance on public transport.

Yes, although I think I’m right in saying that they used to own the land there before the new stadium was built. I remember playing against them some 25 years ago at that location. Once Tony Gale pulled the plug that was it.

I thought Casuals were relatively new. At most 50 years old?

Walton & Hersham were always the senior team in the area, but whether the club with that name is reformed I don't know. I do remember seeing them play at Stompond(?) Lane in the Isthmian League Premier 30 years ago.

After posting, I thought I ought to look it up!

According to wiki, Walton & Hersham were founded in 1945 & Walton Casuals in 1947. I'm assuming that it has been this century that Casuals took over as the club playing at the higher level.

Yes remember Walton and Hersham beating Brighton (Clough as manager) in the cup. Casuals we’re still playing Surrey premier league about 30 years ago.

Keeping this topic going, what are the ideas for a non-train and non-Blackburn weekend?

We're intending to head to a 2pm ko with the Saturday friendly of Peckham Town v London Samurai Rovers. Easy for me to get to by bus. New ground for me.

Tonight I am hoping to head down to Haywards Heath v Kingstonian but there are train issues already.

On Saturday depending on trains I am going to to try and head to Leighton Town v QPR U-23's.

edit: enjoy the smallest stand in the world at Peckham!

With the lack of trains making Leighton Town v QPR U-23's impossible, gonna head to Buckhurst Hill v Romford in the Essex Senior League.

Promoted at home to relegated!

Buckhurst Hill only came second in the ECL Division One South last season, even though they scored over 100 goals & more than Ipswich Wanderers.

I understand from Wanderers contacts that they were impressed by the facilities there.

Yes, but it is unofficial.

Fun game with Peckham coming back from 3-1 down to win 4-3, though that had something to do with the subs after the Samurais were 3-1 up. Seven goals and an all-in which saw the only two cautions of the game though I think in a full league match there would have been quite a few more, and mostly to Peckham. And, what's more, home by 4:30 after a 2pm start.
