They do TS, however the negative talk regarding expectations and the play offs doesn't inspire people.

We limped to our highest ever finish in all honestly and KH calling the game we achieved it a dead rubber, sums it up really.

We need to sell the dream, something that fans and potential fans can feel a part of!

I'm not sure that anyone knows what that dream is tbh.

we limped ffs we never had Lund, Dawson, Logan JOC for the latter part part of season. We did well finishing 8 considering we were missing the above, some people are never happy unless they are moaning.

He could. He couldn't. He did accept that Tranmere job when we were top of League Two and they were in the League One relegation zone... thankfully he was talked around. He does seem more involved with the running of the whole club now, so I think it'd take something big.

I guess it is how Chesterfield would push themselves (IF they even approach... he isn't favourite for the job, its all Twitter talk atm). From this end they look like a club with ambition, a shiny stadium and decent support. There is the reported debt (if it exists), which I would assume is a manageable debt. The problem with manageable debts is just that, they're manageable, which means cutting your cloth accordingly and that can affect budgets.

His interview last week was all about ambition and future plans. I could understand a jump if it was a progressing Championship club or maybe a 'sleeping giant'. I don't think Chesterfield meet those criteria, but I gave up guessing the future when Tranmere paid a fee for Donnelly.

Also the Champions League telly affecting crowds question will be answered next season. BT Sport have the rights to all the games, only a very small handful (Each British Team once, so could be as little as three) and the Final will be available for 'free' and they'll still be on the BT platform. They also won't be free to BT Internet customers. The days of Manchester United pulling in 8 million viewers on Granada when we're playing Barnet on the same cold, wet February night are a thing of the past.

Gotta disagree with you on this one Mr Boot. I credit Hilly with having plenty of intelligence and don't see him giving up a good secure job for anything less than a decent sized Champioship Club.

He can afford to wait, secure a fantastic salary/contract and he will be set up for life. His next move is the big one and I don't see a Chestefield coming into the equation, he's better than Chesterfield!!

We don't have the desire from the Boardroom or some of our fanbase to push for the Championship so anybody with ambitions reaching higher than league one needs to move on and we should wish them well, you can't knock people for reaching for the stars. It's all about knowing your limitations.

I agree with your first two paragraphs entirely. I couldn't comment on the last one.

Hilly had his fingers burnt and ego bruised at oakwell...

I think he can manage at championship level but probably never at Dale.... As unlikely Chesterfield IMO I think it would take a Preston or a Sheffield type club to tempt him away again.

Hilly could build something special here and if we did manage what seems like the impossible he would go down in history as our finest ever manager..

I hope he has some luck with his targets this summer and Dale recruit well. Hilly revitalised and our young guns tearing it up in league 1 in 3 months time is something to look forward too.

the next step would be at a club he felt he could take from the Championship to the Premier League, not a team that would be up against it in the Championship.

Chesterfield are not that team and there's nothing in this other than some Spireite fan admiring Hilly's talents.

He'll have to be sacked to leave then. Because no Championship side pushing for the Premier would put up with his "not my fault" ways. Don't get me wrong, Keith Hill is the best thing to happen to Rochdale, but he wouldn't last long at any club with a large fan base if he kept blaming them for every loss.

He will go to the first club to offer a decent salary, and quite right, too. Sacked managers earn more money than those who keep their jobs, anyway. We are far more likely to be in a relegation than a play-off fight next season, with or without Hill. If he leaves now, he will always be the manager who, in some people's deluded eyes, would inevitably have taken us to the Championship, just as Parkin would, inevitably, have got us promoted. If he leaves he wins, if he stays he risks everything. The Championship ship sailed on 31st January 2015!

If I am reading your post right, your contention is that even if Hilly is still here, we are more likely to be in a relegation battle than a play off battle next year?

Out of curiosity, could you explain this rationale because I don't share this gloomy outlook?

Hilly has built two teams worthy of promotion from L2 to L1 and with some strengthening of the latter, he got it to the brink of the play-offs. I could accept the team was less strong at season's end without Logan, JOC, Done and with Daws and Allen missing plenty of time etc. etc. KH has all summer to strengthen the squad again, though, and has already made his first move in that respect. He also has a youth squad with plenty of promise and home-grown talent to develop into potential future first team members. We more than held our own in L1 this year. We conceded too many goals and struggled to get Ws against the top echelon of teams, but to suggest that this young team, which is gaining vital experience and growing in confidence is suddenly going to tank seems to me a leap too far, even for the most pessimistic Dale fan. The only scenario in which this could occur is if we lose a handful of vital first team members, but isn't that the whole reason we have been disciplined fiscally, in order to build this strong foundation and develop each year. We don't HAVE to sell now, we did in the past. I don't think we'll finish in the top half, I expect we will, unless Hilly has his hands tied behind his back.

^^^This.

Plus, he failed here with a struggling Championship side, he didn't overachieve despite brief flashes of magic. He did worse than Davey and Robins. Who aren't great managers.

I think he's a good manager Keith. I think he 'could' be great, further up the pyramid. But only if he altered his personality/attitude. You just can't walk into a club of Championship standing, tell the fanbase "I've checked the Barnsley history books, there isn't one" and stubbornly pick useless basterds just because they performed well in L2 for Rochdale.

Had he never slagged off our club upon arrival, or waged a war with supporters from day one, and dropped underperforming players he'd signed, I think he'd have fared better here. With the fans at least. In my 27 seasons watching BFC I have never - other than under Keith - witnessed so many regular defeats, and most owing to shit defenders he'd signed not picking men up at set pieces. And then Keith would say post-match "well, the lad cost their club £1m so....."

Not only that, he is the only manager who has ever made me feel sad after a victory. You'd walk out of the game thinking "that was better, we might be ok here, bravo Keith" etc etc. Turn on the radio and you've got him having a pop at the supporters for whatever bee he had in his bonnet that evening.

Just barmy.

If he sorts that out, he could go far. My partners son plays in the Championship, he's just won POTY for that club, and yet he still says training there is nothing like it was under Keith. One of the lads who was treated quite shabbily during the Hillcroft regime still told me Keith is the best training ground coach he'd come across in over 20 years of football.

And look what he's achieved with you lot. It's nothing short of sensational. But he can get away with the attitude with you lot, because he's the best manager you've ever had, yet in essence, he's done very little in the grand scheme of things. Look at Simon Grayson. Shite manager, awful football his teams play. But he's got promotions on his CV, multiple. Is he a better manager/coach than Keith? Not in my opinion. But I guarantee he never went into Huddersfield, Blackpool, Leeds and PNE and told them they were without history and that they should expect to lose every week.

Barnsley was never the right club for Hilly . He had it nearly right that 1st season , you were playing some great football and just outside the playoffs - top scorer sold, top midfielder on loan gets nicked by Leicester and an injury to your missus lad and that was it. He was onto something but without the financial clout to keep hold of your best players at that level he was always walking a tightrope with 2 broken legs.

I am a big fan of American Football. Not footy related, I know, and different economics/constraints, with the draft, salary cap and a whole host of other factors, but the Green Bay Packers, a small franchise in a small city in the Mid West, owned by the public, competes at the highest level and has won more than it's fair share of Superbowls. It can be done.

With regards to RAFC, many would argue the club has had a laissez faire attitude to attendance, so it has had to develop a different business model to survive and prosper by acting as a scaled down selling club. I accept the limitations that this model will only get you so far as all the best players eventually leave. The flip side of this is we have a new MM, Frances, who will hopefully try to reverse the trend of woeful attendances, but putting ticket prices up has already left her behind the black ball somewhat in this regard. I agree with your point BobbyJoe - there is plenty of untapped potential out there, but credit where credit is due, at least steps have been taken by the club. Will they be big enough, fast enough or effective - only time will tell and I admit to having reservations too.

I do still think that with the right squad, though, not overspending and developing players, we can compete at the top end of L1 with the current business model. Not saying it isn't a precarious way of going about your business, but I contend it can be done on a budget. In fact, if you look at our cup run the last couple of seasons, we have proven ourselves capable of getting results at the next level. I still don't share your pessimism.

Went to watch Lanky today, on buying my ticket, was politely asked my name, postcode and house number.

Then asked if would mind receiving any promotions that Lanky would be doing.

Took all of 30 seconds and was even thanked for attending, not made to feel that I was spoiling somebodies day by buying a ticket.

Putting up match day prices I believe is just to cash in on the big away followings expected next season. Hopefully the club will be doing plenty of promotions throughout the season to try and get more home fans attending - this must be a big task for Frances to get her thinking head on because it was an area sadly lacking last season.
