Ferrie Bodde on 07:45 - Feb 14 by Dr_Winston | Bodde shouldn't have been in a position to "insist". He was under contract to us and we were paying for treatment. Should have gone where we told him to. The club indulged him a hell of a lot over that period. |
It was his body, not the management's. We paid for his work, not for the right to carry out surgery on him against his wishes. But maybe you were joking. Anyway, good luck to Ferrie. He did well for us. [Post edited 14 Feb 2014 13:17]

Ferrie Bodde on 11:52 - Feb 14 by LeonisGod | He'd struggle to make it into the top 5 of our current batch. Good player yes. Had the potential to be a very good player, but we shall never know. |
If he'd continued to play like he did pre-injury, he'd definitely be good enough to play in our midfield. In my opinion of course. I find it strange that people say 'he only played at League One and Championship level', so did Britton before we got promoted and I think we'd all agree he's done alright. Not to mention players in other positions like Williams, Dyer and Rangel. Bodde stood out as easily the most talented player we had in his year and a half before injury. I still believe we'd have at least made the playoffs that season if we hadn't lost him to injury. Just to support that argument, I went and had a look at our results that season. Following being dicked 4-0 at Reading, we lost only one of our next 9 games (at Wolves who got promoted and a game which we deserved much more out of), winning 5 of them. We lost the Brum game after he went off, then went on a run of 8 successive draws. We then went on a good run to be fair, but the damage was done in that run. His replacement in the team was Tudur-Jones by the way, hard as that is to believe. I don't remember him as a 'hard' player like some of the names mentioned here in terms of crunching tackles, but more a player who played with an edge to his game that demanded 100% from his teammates and always threatened to produce an explosion (which we saw a few times). A bit like Roy Keane in that regard. As usual though, there's plenty of revisionism going on. Understandable given the way he acted off the pitch, but disappointing none the less.

Comparing Bodde to Trundle is a right bitchslap. You better hope Ferrie doesn't see it. Bodde at his peak would certainly give Canas, Shelvey and possibly JDG something to think about. Different types of players admittedly.

I know that........ I was refering to the poster saying that Bodde was a hard b*stard, IMO and in comparison Ante was harder,Irespective of their playing positions.

Ah I dunno. I just think we glorify some former players who were great at that level but didn't have the characteristics to cope at the higher level but think they would have done just the same. Could you imagine De Guzman at that level? It'd be positively unfair. Yet the same ones moaning about him now would think he was the best ever if playing back then. Tough thing to compare really.

Can't argue with that and the glorifying has often annoyed me, not least with Trundle. I did hesitate to even type JDG's name if I'm honest. I may well be viewing Ferrie through rose-tinted glasses and poor memory, but I just remember thinking how his class stood out, right from the first away game up at Oldham. That game probably still probably ranks as the happiest I've been after a defeat. I couldn't believe how good the likes of Bodde, Rangel and Scotland looked and was certain something special was building.

Aye me and all. Was convinced after that game we'd get promoted. Still can't believe we lost. Ferrie was great though. Such a shame.

Britton for one. Goal scoring defensive midfielder = rocking horse shit

I wouldnt have Bodde playing the deep lying role. Neither did Martinez all that often either, and it was he who converted Leon to that role. In the formation Monk seemingly wants to play, he'd be up against Canas, De Guz and Shelvey ... and it'd be interesting to see how he compares there.

Yes. Very frustrating times in the Championship with the refs. I remember Carsley playing against us for Birmingham, in the first 20 mins, they must have put in about 5 bookable 'tackles', no card given, then the first yellow given to us. Used to annoy the hell out of me.

Would you replace him for: Leon - nope De Guzman - nope (proven Holland international) Canas - nope Michu - nope Jonjo - possibly He maybe could have stepped up, but fact was he hadn't by the time he got injured at what 26/27?

Ten times the player of JDG and Canas. Better defensively than Canas and scored more, created more than JDG. Stupid to say considering quite how far we have come over the last 7 years or so but if he had been fit and was still here then we'd be even further. Fantastic player and one which I still think we are lacking today, a player who can sit next to Leon, get stuck in and rough up the sides that try and rough us up and yet still create and score goals. Not many of them in any league in any country. Massive waste. He'd get more 60 yard passes right than Stevie G.

10 times better? But spending his career in the lower leagues and being ignored by the national coach. Don't get me wrong, I liked him and thought he always looked a cut above. But in a not short career he never made the step up. That's the only proven fact in this debate. We'll never actually know how it would have turned out. I suspect rather well, but he was no Gerard.
Ferrie Bodde on 19:13 - Feb 14 with 1387 views | ItchySphincter | He never made the step up? He was on an upward trajectory, same as all the others at the time. He was in his comfort zone in the Championship and likely would have made the transition to Premier League with no problem. He did also play in the top flight in Holland. He wasn't a defensive midfielder either, he was a deep lying playmaker, the likes of which we'll be lucky to see again. Easily the best player in the squad at the time and that was a squad that contained a good few of our current PL players. Would have made the step up, easy.

Ferrie Bodde on 09:08 - Feb 14 by gosfordjack | If you can spot a talented midfielder, this guy was one of the best I have seen in a Swans shirt. I have watched Swans since 1970 and Ferrie is up there with the best. I imagine what it could have been, if he was fit and with us now, to pick a pass and lay it on a sixpence, was a joy to watch. Jason Scotland scored some crackers from Ferrie sublime passes. Best of luck Ferrie you deserve the opportunity. |
I'm a year behind you and I totally agree. I saw Ante, Tommy and the others, and they were great, but so was Ferrie. Absolute class and such a shame that he couldn't be fit enough to perform on the current stage. I saw enough of him to put him straight into a starting line up of the. Best Swans team in my time. Whether that meets people's definition of a legend - I don't know!
