Southampton V Liverpool The Preview Friday, 7th Mar 2025 11:45 How do I write this one, I doubt whether many Saints fans are putting their money on this not being the 8th defeat in a row for Southampton at Anfield, it's top V bottom and never in my 50 odd years of supporting Southampton has the gulf in class been as wide between the two teams. Even when Liverpool where dominating English & indeed European football in the 1970's & 80's was the gap between the two clubs been so wide and that perhaps is a sad indictment of the state that English football is in, in the 2020's. The big clubs get bigger and richer and the poor might get better but they still pale in comparison with the likes of Liverpool & Manchester City, but it isn't just Saints, even Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur Manchester United & Arsenal can't keep up these days,, not to mention the young pretenders on the block Newcastle. So Southampton travel to Anfield without a hope in hell, it wasn't so long ago that I would have had a positive spin on the game, that although the odds were against us, stranger things had happened, we always had a chance ! But not these days, we are lambs to the slaughter, as are most of the Premier League, hence 10 wins, 2 draws and only 1 defeat at home for the Reds so far this season. 28 goals scored and only 10 conceded at Anfield, no one has scored more or conceded less at home in the Premier League. At the other end you have Saints who have the mirror image, on the road 28 conceded and only 10 scored , although there is one bright spot here, Leicester have conceded more. So there surely can be only one result. When the team that has been picked by lottery and is announced at 1.45pm, reality will hit home for Saints fans, the days of bottom beating top in the Premier league are long gone. If Liverpool offer to shake on a 3-0 defeat after 20 minutes we should accept it and head home. This season is done, the only thing that matters now is getting those 3 points that mean that we aren't the worst team ever in the Premier League. This could all have been avoided by strong leadership in the boardroom at St Mary's, that now cannot be changed, but the future can be, Saturday will be Saturday, whatever happened we need change on Monday.
