I hadn't realised Murphy had just turned 21. Yeah, I'd expect him to go in the summer in that case. Petrie too.

It was a funny old team in some respects, which you do find at this level, even more so when you have lots of guys out on loan. Shepherd in goal, and then 16 year old Charlie Street coming off the bench.

Ah, it said Esquerdinha on the team sheet I saw on Twitter, but that would make more sense. I'll edit the post. Thanks

Went to watch the game tonight. I've seen some of these players before but one or two were new to me.

First half we looked like a well coached team. No-one really stood out but we were well organised and looked to pass the ball well. Perhaps guilty of overplaying once or twice but that's not a terrible thing at this age. No clear cut opportunities on goal, but a couple of well worked half chances and a good long range effort from O'Brien. Deserved to be 1-0 up at half-time, with a handball leading to a penalty right on half time.

Second half started very differently, with Leicester playing on the front foot and pushing us back. We struggled to put our foot on the ball and get our passing going, resorting to clearing our lines and attempting to re-set. Sutton's goal came against the run of play and he took it very well, cutting back onto his right and curling it into the top corner. Leicester continued to work had but we looked comfortable and started to get our passing going again. The rest of the half was very even.

Of the players, Sutton will get the plaudits for his goal, and it was very good. He's still very raw though, and spends most of the game waiting for the ball to come to him. He's a long way off, and needs a lot of work, but that's fine we shouldn't expect 18 year olds to be bursting into the first team, we're a Cat 2 Academy for a reason.

There was a trialist centre back, number 4 with the curly hair, who had a good game. O'Brien and Murphy were our best attacking players, creative and hard working. Dillon worked hard up front and covered a lot of ground but didn't get much service. Lots of talk about Talla in the past, but he's 20 now and looks nowhere near the first team. Nice technique but he made some poor decisions, especially for a deep-lying midfield player.

Leicester, for a PL club, didn't show a lot. Plenty of effort but not much more than that.

All in all, a deserved win and into the quarter finals.

And breathe... - Simon Dorset's annual deep dive into the accounts

Re the disallowable costs on infrastructure projects - how much leeway is there in this? For example, could the owners of a club pay for the purchase (or build costs) of a hotel or block of flats or some other income-generating investment on behalf of the club?

School End Lower
at 15:39 20 Feb 2025

There was a canopy (or at least netting) hanging from the front of the upper tier to protect the QPR fans sitting in the lower tier during our promotion-wining season of 2010/11. As soon as we got promoted the club returned to giving the entire School End to away teams.

I got into a bit of an email back and forth with someone at the club over it. They insisted that they had to give 3,000 seats to visiting fans, despite me pointing to the rules that clearly stated it was 3,000 seats or 10% of capacity if the stadium held less than 30,000.

It would be very easy to re-install it.

I'm sorry, I just don't buy this nonsense about vetting posts and needing media advisers to prevent him repeating these comments. He read those things and thought "Yes, they do own America" and "we do need mUslims to wake up and deal with Israel" and he decided to re-post them. He's a grown man, and supposedly an intelligent one, these excuses don't stand up.

Some of the things he re-tweeted are just flat out anti-semitic, eg the use of "Zio" is an old far right euphemism for Jews, and stating that Isreal "owns" the US.

Aside from that, anyone endorsing the phrase "Brave muslims of the world, what are you waiting for?" given the near constant threat of terrorism around the world is obviously someone lacking intelligence (or at best had an incredibly sheltered life).

I can't say I'm surprised he holds these views, but to so publicly share them is unexpected to say the least.

There is absolutely no comparison between Dunne and Willock. The former has worked his knackers off every week, the latter did naff all.

The vast majority thought that selling Furlong for £1.5m and signing Todd Kane on a free was great business. One of those is now playing in the National League, whilst the other would have been our captain the past few years.

It's actually incredible how often people say "we can replace him with better" without any consideration of finances or opportunities or even squad chemistry. It's one of a kind with "sign a striker".

All sorts of lobby groups donate to all political parties, but it's funny that it's always the Israel-connected ones that get mentioned.

Funded by Israel?

Nice to see posters leaning into one of the oldest antisemitic tropes going. And half a dozen likes, eh? Good work lads.

Lloyd and saito

It's interesting because we all have set memories of players, especially from 30 years ago (gulp!) but if you go and look at Les' goals on YouTube you'll see that quite often the ball is bobbling around. He certainly didn't have great ball control but more than compensated for that with the pace, the power, the leap, the shot, the header, etc, etc. And, as I've said many times before, Les was well into his 20s before he started scoring goals on a regular basis and became the player we all loved.

Lloyd has a hell of a long way to go still, but it's obvious he's learning and improving week by week. The coaching staff are doing a good job with him and the other young players in the squad.

True. Interestingly though, the two goals he's created recently for Dunne have been from first time crosses, so hopefully it's something they've been talking about with him. It would make him a much more dangerous player (and he's already very good, obviously) if he did that more consistently.

New goalie for development squad
at 09:53 9 Jan 2025

The truth is no-one knows if a goalie is going to make it or not, they're a strange breed who are very unpredictable, until they're playing regularly in the first team. There are simply too many variables. That goes for other sports too, listen to anyone in ice hockey for instance and they'll tell it's a complete mystery. That's why football clubs sign more goalkeepers than any other position at a young age and then see who comes through.

Martin Lewis has been talking about this for a long time now. You can actually top up years going back to 2006 if you do it before April this year. For most people - but not everyone - it'd be worth doing.

Cook's looking increasingly slow, not only in general play where his dropping deep is problematic, but also in terms of his footwork when challenging players. Next year it'll be even worse. He'll be difficult to replace though because of his other attributes.

Agree on Dunne though. Good lad, works hard, embedded in the club. Spending money to replace him would be a waste when you could simply resign him.

Your summation is probably fair, but none of that makes his performance yesterday a 6.

Either way, none of the good points from yesterday outweigh the negatives. He's still not a Championship midfielder.

If the owners walked away the club would continue. We'd have to cut our cloth accordingly, but we'd still be here. They've been nothing sort of a disaster since they walked in the door.
