Inspired by the three favourite albums thread and bored silly at work, I've taken the bold decision to launch a thread titled, "Three favourite films of all time".
In no particular order:
Rushmore It's a wonderful life Miller's Crossing
Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

Although some great films have come from Hollywood in the past (e.g. The Godfather), I have long considered Hollywood brain-dead, while the epic quality seems to have entirely vanished from British cinema, which instead focuses on niche 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' type films.
All my recommendations are from East Asia, because East Asian film restored my faith in cinema (one is from Japan, one from China, and one from Korea):
Ikiru (1952) dir: Akira Kurosawa Raise the Red Lantern (1991) dir: Zhang Yimou Happiness (2007) dir: Hur Jin-ho

(although not quite as obscure as the ones above!)
1. "Life is Sweet" or "Naked" (both by Mike Leigh and both class and Dark) 2. Twin Town (Brilliant, funny and quirky with Swansea in Mind) 3. Doctor Zhivago (David Lean at his best and a story full of depth with a Very special cast)
My Dad used to make me watch DZ as a kid. Felt like a right snooze fest then- but brilliant now! Viewers may need a crash course in Russian political histopry prior to watching (also see Lawrence of Arabia and Zulu for other epics. Films to engulf you. Like the richest of food; just now and again.)

Harsh to criticise all of Hollywood as brain-dead, but fair play, Raise The Red Lantern is amazing, Shame Zhang Yimou went from that and films like Ju Dou, Legend of Qiu Ju and To Live to directing the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Curse you for choosing a Kurosawa film I haven't seen, but thumbs-up to the ones I have...Rashomon, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha, Ran. To be honest, I've always found Korean cinema a bit over-rated. There's shock value in eating live octopus, but I find them otherwise sentimental or xenophobic. I loved Untold Scandal though.

Thinking about 3 films I can watch many times I have to add:
The Commitments - great soul music and funny as ***k! Local Hero - off-beat quirky lol funny and superb sound track Some like it hot - MM nom nom ("I always get the fuzzy end of the lollipop!")

Foreign cinema: Jean de Florette (and Mamon de sources) Au revoir mes enfants.... so well shot, that my young children understand it even if they can not keep up with the subtitles. Les Choristers
And finally, particularly as it reminds me of my four... Overboard. Very silly, but just love it (Known as naughty boys at home)
I've not seen Au Revoir Mes Enfants, but I once saw an interview with Quentin Tarantino, where he was telling how he worked in a video store before he made films, and recommending that film to a customer, they replied "I don' wanna watch no Reservoir Dogs", and so he got the title of his first film. True story.
By the way, I loathe "It's a Wonderful Life" more than any film ever made. But then, one of my family killed himself, without any loveable angel to save them.

Ikiru (Living) asks the question 'What is the meaning of a person's life?' in a much more moving way than 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Kurosawa's brother committed suicide, and Kurosawa also attempted suicide.

The Ladykillers. Guinness, Sellers, Lom etc The Mission & Once Upon A Time in America. De Niro at his most riveting. Escape To Victory. The best/worse film of all time. The Sting. Anything with Robert Shaw. Did he ever make a bad film? Magic. Hopkins on his way to mega status. Films with Gary Oldman & Juliette Binoche in. No real 5 star jobs that I can think of at this time, but I like them all the same.
What a great list to check off one by one. Three (not yet listed i think) films whose visual and general impact has stayed with me are: Hana Bi - Japanese retiring cop angst The Runaway Train - Shawhank without the four added sugars Come And See - the Wehrmacht passes through your Ukrainian village
The most important thing, though: Never, ever waste your time on The Tree of Life.
PS Honourable mention for Sea of Love
A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.
Great shouts, hopphoops. There are many posters on this messageboard knowledgable & fascinated about WW2.A must watch for all of them is the visceral corruscating tour-de-force that is Come and See (1985) to really have some idea what it was like to be on the receiving end of the horrors of the Wehrmacht's thrust eastwards.
Also agree with you on Hana-bi. Any Kateshi 'Beat' Kitano japanese 'tough but tender' gangster film is guaranteed to be 5 star tip-top.
'I'm 18 with a bullet.Got my finger on the trigger,I'm gonna pull it.."
Love,Peace and Fook Chelski!
More like 20StoneOfHoop now.
Let's face it I'm not getting any thinner.
Pass the cake and pies please.

Cheers 18!
and for something a bit different
A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.
If you like the music of Ry Cooder and I suspect most of you don't then get a load of the film 'Paris Texas' Strange but compelling film with just fabulous back drop scenery of Texas Itself, so fabulous we visited Texas ourselves just to do the road trip. There's something about Texas blues.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Come and See - THE best war film ever made. In Russian with subtitles it truly demonstrates how horrific war is. Heat - astonishing performances by De Niro and Pacino. Ôdishon - astonishingly tense Japanese horror that builds over an hour and then slams you between the eyes - kiri kiri kiri kiri...
Enemy At The Gates Alien Aliens Das Boot Schindlers List Shawshank Redemption The Untouchables Once Upon A Time In America The Godfather The Godfather Part II Star Wars (1 6) The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover Lord Of The Rings Le Haine The Exorcist Remains Of The Day Star Trek (2009) Pulp Fiction Fargo Blood Simple Angels With Dirty Faces Scarface Dead Ringers District 9 Kick Ass The Incredibles Planet Of The Apes (Original) Super 8 Leaving Las Vegas Kill Bill 1 and 2

Looked at this thread yesterday and Come and See wasn't on it; 18 hours later it's here. Will have to get the DVD out and watch it again now.
Couldn't name 3, but the inbetweeners movie would be in there. Forest Gump, quadrophenia, the 3 original Sweeney films, carry on camping, any bond film with Connery starring.
