Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up 09:26 - Nov 16 with 2421 views | ParkRoyalR | This is not intended to dig-out Cifuentes, More so to highlight how Cifuentes seems to me to be of the Arsene Wenger school of ..we'll play & impose our game..and not the Mourinho school of..we'll set our tactics out according to the opposition.. I get this is quite a broad statement but having seen Doak give a £ 77m valued Left Back the run around last night, how did Cifuentes not see what we all knew was coming & set up the team accordingly against Doak's Middlesbrough? When I was playing Saturday afternoon football, and you knew from previous season the opposition's Right Winger was their go-to star man, you made sure you stiffened up your Left Side to support your Left Back, basics, Cifuentes could have put Field, Saito or Smyth in front of Santos, rather than Chair who is coming back to match fitness and has never been the most defensively disciplined left-sided attacker, but Cifuentes chose to play an inexperienced Right Back as Left Back and still did'nt change it when everyone in the ground could see what was coming, Too often we're told it's our players who throw our Managers under the Bus (and I'd agree Austin & Gray did to Warburton) but with Cifuentes, Ainsworth & Critchley I've too often thought WTF are you doing.
Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 11:33 - Nov 16 with 2172 views | johnhoop | Having seen Doak on TV playing in a couple of Liverpool Cup games last year I had a pretty good idea what was coming and said to my brother before the game we were going to really have to watch out for this guy. I think he’s a level above the Championship in the same way Kyle Walker was when he played for us all those years ago. I agree that you would have thought our management might have had some awareness of it as well and set us up a bit better to cope with him.
Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 11:44 - Nov 16 with 2102 views | Northernr | I mean I guess he would say injuries to all of this. But I agree sticking Santos who has struggled in his own position out there against Doak was suicide. Not being a smart arse but we said this in F Block before the game even kicked off. What I would add is either because of the system or because Smyth is the only winger we’ve got who even pretends to defend, is our full backs have been exposed all season. Paal got a roasting even against Cambridge.
Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 11:47 - Nov 16 with 2084 views | Burnleyhoop | Not often we agree Park, especially with regard to Chair and Dykes, but you’re bang on with this one. I can only assume Marti has more faith in some of these players than we do or he’s sending a message to Noury and Belk. Either way, it’s not good.
Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 11:58 - Nov 16 with 2014 views | BostonR | We've been soft as shite for over 10yrs. I honestly cannot remember a prolonged string of games where we have dominated home and away. Marti corrected that after Xmas last year "on and off" and we did look very solid as the season closed. He's a smart coach, worked in different leagues and my take is he had worked out the Championship. Result - he gets thrown a load of light-weights to coach and yet again we are soft as shite. I still fail to understand why we did not cherry-pick the very best of L1 and in some cases L2 players who could step up to the physical challenge. Whenever I see Oxford Utd on the TV - they literally run themselves into the ground and make it so difficult to play against them.

Agree we are a weak team and have been for quite a while. Against Boro, Doak was a class act and tearing Santos to pieces. Regardless of whether Santos was played out of position I have seen nothing to suggest he is a player of the strength and quality needed at Championship level. Personally think we are a bit of a team where throw mud at the wall and hope it sticks, it seems that philosophy runs right through the club. [Post edited 16 Nov 12:15]

I’ve lost count of the number of times when we’ve stood back and watched while Barry bloody Bannan has controlled the game against us. [Post edited 16 Nov 18:06]

A couple of points in mitigation. In the run up to Boro game, Doak was a doubt. I think he'd missed their previous game or was an injury doubt. Chair, even half fit, doesn't neglect the defensive side of his game. I'm not sure what other options were available to Marti for that particular game. Didn't he end up with Saito at LB?

Burnley; 100 % not a dig at you. Couldn’t the manager/coach whatever the feck they are this week, not go and have a chat face to face or online or however the feck they do it and try to get the Feckin thing sorted? Talk. Or is it just too complicated these precious days?

Chair does defend though, the problem was that he was crocked for both of their goals. tbh The only alternative option was to play Morrison which clearly they thought was a risk and move Field out to left back. I'm pretty sure at the start of the season they would have thought well if Paal gets injured we can play Colback there or we could play Field there or at a push we could play Ashby there so we are probably at option 5 with Santos. The reality is and we can talk about recruitment etc but we can barely cope with 3 or 4 injuries let alone 8 or 9. We have to be asking serious questions about the perfomance team as most of these are muscle not impact, its like 2022 and all the Hamstring injuries
Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 09:35 - Nov 17 with 944 views | TK1 | Little context: Ben Doak absolutely destroyed £70 million-quid, Man City left back Gvardiol playing for Scotland against Croatia on Friday. Entirely responsible for their win, and with a decent striker he'd have set more than one. It looked like he was playing against QPR again. Probably of no comfort to Santos or Marti. But he's going to have a big career by the looks of it.

Having a Head of Performance doing the job part-time (at best) whilst living in Dubai has to be a major factor. I can’t imagine any other club putting up with this situation. Our absentee, clueless owners are so gullible and naive it defies belief. The club is a complete shitshow from top to bottom.

Ben Doak - Cifuentes Tactics & Team Set Up on 10:10 - Nov 17 with 837 views | golborne | Forgetting the personnel for a sec. Initially, I couldn’t understand why we switched from a solid 3 4 3 against Sunderland to a flat back 4 against boro, given we had a CM playing at CB. My assumption was that Marti didn’t want to leave that space in the wide areas, so maybe he did change things up. Also, the seemingly world beating Doak didn’t fancy it against Saito in the 2nd half. Tried a couple of times without joy, then started putting early balls in. Saito had him all day long for pace and got himself touch tight on a few of the early encounters, so the only way past was the long way and Saito just nipped in with ease. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I’d have stayed with 343 and had Saito at left wing back, where he hasn’t put a foot wrong. Although, I personally like to see him further up the pitch, as he’s been the one breath of fresh air this season. Every away fan I’ve chatted to in the days after has mentioned him.

Doak run us ragged from the 1st minute and I can't recall Chair doing anything to stop him, he had a free run on Santos from the off. Saito would have been far preferable as we saw week previous as he's disciplined ,can tackle and is quick, Chair good lad, is none of these things. Get the basics right and then play.

Chair wasn't injured until after both of the Middlesbrough goals were scored & he gave next to zero support to Santos. Not that I think that would have made any difference. The choice was who to play on the left & Cifuentes decided on the right footed Chair rather than the left footed Saito. [Post edited 17 Nov 14:06]

You would have thought so Mick, but open, transparent and honest communication seems to have gone out of fashion. The world has become a very strange place and not one I like at all. Guess I’m just an old fart that harks back to the good old days when everything seemed much simpler.

No mate you are wrong on that. Chair was injured on the 28th minute Boro scored on 31st and 35th minutes. I sit that side of the ground, Yes Doak was still doing well beforehand but Chair was providing some sort of cover - he could barely run after the stoppage started to run it off a bit after 5-10mins then pulled up again just before half time https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/clyd8lwg87yt?page=4

My apologies baz. I was so certain the injury was after the goals that I just checked on the full video & I was 100% wrong! I still say that we would have been better having our left footed wide player on the left & Chair on the right though!
