Robinson as left wing back? 16:20 - Jan 7 with 7598 viewsphilosopher

Robinson has had a great season since moving to centre-back and along with Freeman and Luongo is surely a candidate for player of the year. But now we have other centre backs fit again, and if we persist with 3-5-2, could he switch to left wing back with Pavel right wing back? Basic Bidwell is a solid full back with the occasional bit of brilliance (eg interception or goal-line clearance) but is not quick enough for a wing back. Robinson is faster, can cross the ball and knows where the goal is. Could that work, assuming we have Ned, Baptiste and Hall/Lynch available?

Well, he used to be an attacking left back before his injury. He has looked sharp. For the right side, I think I heard someone say that Pavel was one of the fastest at the club. Bit of a mystery why Cousins continues to play there. Ollie seems determined to keep playing the system so we need more options.

WHY do you want to change something that’s working well? Leave Robinson where he is.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

I'm sure he could do it, but things are alright on that left side and he's doing well in the centre. One for next season maybe?

Yep, he's our best centre-back. But somehow need to solve the lack of width

That would be to play wingers and not wing backs. We don't have players capable of doing that.

Never knowingly right.

I appreciate that we’ve had injury problems at the back, but if we have one obvious problem playing 3-5-2, it’s that we do not have anyone capable of playing that position on the left or right. It’s utter madness on Ollie’s part!

I’ve caught two games while back for the Crimbo, and the wing backs is one of several glaring issues: movement yesterday was shocking; we all know strikers scoring is a problem, but Smith cannot start a game- he’s a bloke you throw on in the 70th minute if you’re struggling; we cannot cross and yet, we seem to persist down the flanks.

Three big games coming up, especially as teams below are picking up points. However, should we survive this season, next season is where I think we will face the bigger problems caused by our off-field madness and Ollie’s confusion.

God help you poor souls planning to watch this season’s conclusion.

Yes, forgotten. Not so many games though? , Bidwell has been playing there so long.

Agree about Smith. He can't really hold the ball up either which is a big problem for someone in that position. Plus if we start with him the tendency is to take the long ball too often.

Yes Robinson could be another option if needed but Bidwell really is making this position his own now. I'm a fan.

Well all I can say is you are very easily pleased. I believe Bidwell to be average on a good day and yesterday wasn't one. I know we have problems on the right flank too but I can't see what Bidwell does to be included every week; unless he has one of Ollie's home videos in his locker. I'd be interested to know how many of his 'crosses' have proved to be fruitful this season.

thing is it's not madness on Holloways part to play 3 at the back.

When we played a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 last season the midfield were regularly cut apart without the legs to support the forward or the defence, we would regularly see Smithies making 5/6 one on one saves, we were far too easy to play against.

Since the switch to a back 3 that hasn't happened, the defence is harder to get at, the midfield win the ball back quickly and by playing 2 up front we are occupying defenders and making it harder for the opposition to play high up the pitch against us.

It's not perfect and clear the team lacks width but personally think playing Smyth and Freeman and give them freedom to roam out wide will help solve that problem

Bidwell is good.

Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Why?

Robinson has had a revelation since moving to CB, and should stay there indefinitely.

He's absolutely not quick enough to be a wing back, and we should not move good players out of there best positions. Stroke of luck finding that CB is his best position, and he should stay there and continue to develop, as the only defender we have with a football brain.

Not so much easily pleased as realistic. He's as good as we can hope for really, in this position at this point in time IMO. He has a good fitness record, is reliable and is improving. I'm not surprised he's one of the first names on the teamsheet for Ollie. He would be for me too.

This. Robinson has looked twice the player since he switched to centre back.

Anyone who saw him play left back for us will testify to the fact that he does not look to be a good full back.

Rangers haven't got the full back positions sorted since Padula and Bignot. Even when we went up under Warnock you've got to say Orr was our weakest player and Hill was doing a job there as he's really a centre back.

We had a goodie in Danny Simpson and threw him away.

ps contrary to Hollywood's post I think the wing backs system is horrible. I don't think the 4 at the back the system was the reason we were defensively suspect (lots of teams, over many many decades, have been defensively stable with four at the back) - we were bad at the back because we were poorly organised and coached. If anything sticking three at the back is just a lazy way to shore up the defence.

Not sure where you’ve formed the opinion I was advocating wingbacks, when I’ve clearly said we don’t have anyone capable of playing wide left or right. If we had Clive Wilson, Mark Dennis to choose from on one side, and The Bard and Wayne Fereday on the other, then yes.

But Bidwell and Cousins have never shown me they’re suited to the role, and as for Pav, he has suddenly lost the ability to go past a man. So when we seem he’ll bent onto my going down the flanks most of the time, that’s a problem.

Mate I'm not saying Bidwell & Cousins are good there - they're not - but that's because we've haven't go anyone in the squad who is a specialist for wing back. What I'm saying is moving our best centre defender out to his previous full back position is not the answer. Robinson has been much improved since he moved to centre back.

I am. He's average not good and his crosses often don't clear the first man. I can see what Brentford took £1million for him - looks over priced in retrospect.

We didn't have a weak link when Warnock walked this league.
