I seem to remember somebody putting some info on not too long ago about some residential plans for that site.
Can't remember the exact details.

Imperial College London has emerged as the purchaser for Helical Bar and Aviva Investors’ 11 acre former Dairy Crest site in White City, west London, PropertyWeek.com can reveal.

The university, which already has vast landholdings in the area, is thought to have bought the bought the land adjacent to White City underground station and just north of Westfield London shopping centre.

The site currently has consent for 1,150 new homes, 210,000 sq ft of offices and circa 60,000 sq ft of retail, leisure and community uses set within extensive landscaping.

However, it is thought Imperial College has bought it in order to assemble land for its Imperial West campus expansion plans, which could ultimately cover millions of square feet of student accommodation, teaching, labs, commercial and incubator space for the university, which is one of the world’s leading science centre.

In November last year, Property Week revealed that the university was also in talks to pay around £80m for a Marks & Spencer warehouse site that could host 1.5m sq ft to the south of the Helical and Aviva scheme. It is thought that the Dairy Crest site would have cost Imperial at least £100m.

Imperial obtained planning consent in July for 1m sq ft mixed-use scheme for its Imperial West campus on 7 acres of land, further north up Wood Lane.

The new purchase will give imperial control of more than 30 acres of adjacent land holdings that could become subject to a phased expansion for future generations of students. Last week, Imperial announced that it was exploring joint venture opportunities with global commercial and academic partners, including a Chinese university, Zhejiang University. The pair agreed to explore the possibility of Zhejiang University co-investing in a future facility to co-locate R&D facilities at Imperial West. Sometimes referred to as Zheda, it is a national university in China. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest institutions of higher education

Like UCL and King’s College, Imperial is buoyed by demand from international students who pay high fees, and has the advantage of being able to make long-term investments to protect its future expansion plans outside cluttered central London.

“These organisations think differently from normal businesses – they can plan 100 years into the future,” said one source.

Hey Wombat,

Bit of a surprise there about the plot behind the tube station, hadn't heard anything about Imperial bidding for it. I was convinced that we'd be heading there ourselves.

Not sure where that leaves us really - Old Oak, Park Royal, Linford Christie, Kensal Green Gasworks? Not sure I'm 100% in favour of any of those really, and I can see difficulties with them all.

im still holding out hopes for the BBC centre or at least part of it at least
there was a petition on facebook recently about saving the sound stages etc to protect them from development !! most people were under the conception that those sound stages were protected etc so why start a petition to protect them.

the access is bloody awful at car giant , no pubs no stations , nothing in fact until HS2 is built then it will be weatherpoons , nandos and the usual suspects built on site for all to use cant bloody wait.

one way into car giant and one way out under a dipping bridge at the back of an industrial site next to a railway line , im sure those who go to see coldplay will love to walk down wood lane on the way back to white city or west fields after the gig finishes

If they own the freehold then they could earn very, very well out of it. But then they'd have to find a new site. Depends how they see their business going in future I suppose, but they seem to have been advertising a lot recently.

Indeed. Or Jim Gregory for turning down the opportunity in the late 70's to buy the White City Stadium & site for £400,000.

OK, that was a lot of money then and no one could predict land values, all seater stadium, the PL etc etc.

So that makes Wright's worse I guess as we all knew it was a bargain.

Prob say chris wright is more guilty to be honest , although yes it would have been enough to expand the stadium , it wouldn't have given us enough room for the type of stadium multi use arena that TF and the board want.

Unless TF and the board have a curve ball up there sleeve I'm now concerned that the new ground will be OUT of the immed area and probably somewhere like park royal , so we become the Coventry of west London if that happens.

I think all the sites large enough and most often rumoured have some drawback to them.

Car Giant has horrendous access and, even if the Old Oak railway yards south of the canal are redeveloped, you've still got a huge industrial estate to the north east and west. There are no pubs nearby and public transport is poor. Plus, Car Giant has really grown over the last couple of years. They must be making bundles so why would they move? Get lots for the site but then need to find a new one of comparable size.

Kensal Green Gas Works has even worse access than Car Giant. You'd have 30,000+ people all coming in from Ladbroke Grove and past the Sainsburys. If you think Stamford Bridge is bad with two access points off the Fulham Rd, this would be even worse and a nightmare to police. Public transport here is poor too, although K&C council want a Crossrail station at this site there is no sign of it happening.

Linford Christie Stadium. Unlike the Scrubs itself, the LC is apparently on a small patch of land owned by H&F Council. They might well be interested in selling it, they've sold everything else over the last five years, but we'd have to build a new athletics track and 5-a-side pitches somewhere else nearby. It's conceivable that the government might allow these to go on the Scrubs but I wouldn't bet on it. The Wormwood Scrubs Act bans the building of permanent structures and you can be sure the conservationists would fight this. If you can get past all of that then the site is big enough but access is, again, problematic. Currently there are two narrow, enclosed pathways from Du Cane Rd which cannot be widened because of the prison and hospital, and from Wood Lane which could be widened but would mean knocking down the horse riding school. So we'd have to add them to the list of difficult re-locations. The third option is the path through the Scrubs from East Acton. The police would hate this being used because if any trouble broke out people would be running across the Scrubs, they'd have no way of controlling it to one location. That brings us to East Acton station, which is tiny and has space for a dozen people at any one time. Big, big refurbishment job there for us to pay for.

Park Royal. Well this really depends on where you're talking about. There's a huge plot of unused land next to Diageo because they only redeveloped part of the site when they demolished the brewery. Transport isn't bad with Park Royal and Hanger Lane nearby. No pubs, but then the owners want us drinking in the bars at the new ground. Otherwise, Park Royal is a huge nest of warehouses and industrial units, theoretically we could buy up any parcel of it. I know there are long talked about redevelopment plans that would transform the whole area but god knows what stage they're at and how long a time frame we'd be talking about.

I think Wombat's right; the more you look at it the more likely Park Royal becomes. I don't necessarily object to that but they'd have to be very careful in how they do it so we don't end up in the middle of an industrial estate.
