Well, all good things must come to an end. However, it was the manner of the defeat to lowly Swindon Town that hurt the most. I had predicted a 12th game unbeaten and a 3-0 Colchester victory.
In fairness to me, DC decided to tinker with our most successful run of games for years by benching our three in form players Thorn, Taylor and Edwards. I wrote at the time that it was a strange decision and so it proved. Throwing away three points against Holloway’s mob was both unnecessary and should not have happened.
Once again at 2-1 up with ten left on the clock we managed to concede two late goals including a controversial penalty (given for hand ball but what else could Flanagan do he jumped entirely normally and the ball accidentally glanced off his arm which was not in an unnatural position).
Having watched the game courtesy of Sky a draw would have been a fair result but it wasn’t to be. We must now move on and rebuild following the end of our hugely successful recent unbeaten run.
My dislike for Holloway and Swindon notwithstanding the game has gone and we must now focus on getting back to winning ways.
In an interesting thread on this site the speculation concerning January transfers is now rife. If we are to lose Samson Tovide to Peterboro then a replacement (two if possible) is desperately needed.
Alex Woodyard has gone to Sutton and we wish him well. Ellis Iandolo was unfortunately sent off late on at Swindon and misses today’s game. DC must decide on whether to bring Kells into the back four or Ben Goodliffe or Rob Hunt.
Arthur Read is still injured but Teddy Bishop is an able deputy.
However, Thorn, Taylor and Edwards simply must come back to the starting XI. They should never have been left out at Swindon.
Alfie Bendle is back from Chelmsford where he has been on loan.
The unluckiest player at the club Matt Jay must have run over scores of black cats or broken countless mirrors or walked under ladders to have been treated in this way. He must surely be moved on in this transfer window.
So, a slightly changed team to counter Iandolo’s suspension means that DC must select:
Macey
Egbo Kells Donnelly Flanagan
McDonnell Bishop
Thorn Payne Edwards
Taylor
Subs Smith Goodliffe Anderson Gordon Bendle Hunt Hopper
Danny and Nicky Cowley celebrate their first anniversary in charge at Colchester United this weekend and will be looking to right the wrongs from the County Ground debacle.
It is vital that momentum is not lost and that we secure all three points against Accrington Stanley. John Doolan’s side are also looking for points. The Swindon defeat was awful but it will not define our season. Bouncing back with a 4-1 home win today will get the pulses racing once again.
Weather in Colchester will be 2 degrees Celsius cloudy but dry. A cold January day but the U’s can enjoy the Home comforts that the JCS provides. Maybe 4,500 attendance today and a much-needed home win will restore confidence at a critical time for the U’s.
Enjoy the game.

The only reason I can think of for not starting with Taylor, Edwards and Thorn at Swindon was fatigue due to the heavy pitch at the JCS for the previous couple of games. DC mentioned the pitch in a post-match interview. I agree they need to start today so we can be on the front foot.

Frankie Terry straight in following his recall from Braintree, Kells on the bench, but otherwise spot on Durham. Still no sign of Tovide, so maybe the transfer rumours are true?

Good to see Frankie Terry in the team as feel next few months important for him. Let us hope his return from.loan at Chelmsford is as successful as Oscar's.

Accrington have outplayed us in at least the last three meetings and aren't goal shy. I'd be pleased with a point against them. Difficult, rugged opponents and today we've a very inexperienced referee.

Certainly a very disappointing result.
That was frankly dreadful. I thought we were excellent against Doncaster and deserved a win. Today there was nothing. Second to every ball. No aggression, no desire and no urgency. I am unsure why we feel the need to dither about at the back making no headway and creating no momentum whatsoever. Concerned about Taylor. The only player on the field today with any craft or idea what the end goal was meant to be

Yep, can't disagree, disappointing result and disappointing performance. We looked as burnt out as we did at Swindon. Looks like the physical and mental effort expended to keep that unbeaten run going has taken its toll. At least we have a decent break from the league to recuperate now. Play the kids at Cheltenham, bring in some new players, and then kick on from there.
Pitch was shocking too, that can't help heavy legs (though it was the same for Accy Stanley).

You make some good points. I thought Bishop had a few good moments and was on the receiving end of a lot of fouls. We got to the byline a few times in the first half but the final pass was lacking, which has been a problem all season. With better deliveries we could have had three goals. In the second half we didn't create much at all and we lost control of the midfield. The pitch looks terrible, but it's the same for both sides.

1. Frankie Terry was out of his depth. We were terribly exposed down that flank without Iandolo: 2. Some, notably Egbo, look like they are running on empty. 3. Why calamity Flanagan when Kells & Goodliffe are fit? Flanagan gave away penalty, and possession by inaccurate passes. 4. Our lack of squad depth is self-evident. 5. Ponderous build up from the back frustrates all fans.
We need a week off, so next weeks FA CUP no game is hopefully the perfect antidote.

Luckily only a two nil result , playing last ten with only ten men. Resorted in just playing high ball over the full backs, which resulted to some effect in the first half, but the final ball into the box lacked quality for a finish. No supply whatsoever second half, needed Read to bolster midfield rather than replace Terry, who with Edward’s lack understanding down the left flank. Back to the olde days with this performance and result .

Agree with points 2-5, but think that's a bit harsh on Terry. He's only just come back from Braintree so a tough ask for him. He was clearly nervous at first, but improved toward the end of the first half. Taking him off didn't help, as a few minutes later we conceded the second goal due to poor defending on our left flank. Any blame should be attached to more senior players.

Kells and or Goodliffe should have started at the back.
Have watched the "highlights" which was a tough watch.
Very sad after such an impressive unbeaten run.
We go again but we certainly need two strikers a midfielder and a defender.

The Extened Highlights for those interested.
First time I’ve seen any of that.
How can we look so tired and disinterested? We’ve just had 3 out of 4 games at home and an extra day to recover before Christmas. While Stanley have been travelling up and down the country and should have been more interested in saving themselves for Anfield next week. It's all a bit worrying.
The penalty? Was it given for a foul or for Colchester bringing the game into disrepute by being so utterly shit at defending.
Whalley is 37, but up against Flanagan he looks like a gazelle that's escaped from Colchester Zoo.
At 6:59 DC looks to the skys as if to say "Oh Lord please make this stop" I think it was just a coinsidence that NC was on the gantry.

Not that it's much of a defence but Accrington's game at Tranmere on Boxing Day was postponed. They certainly didn't have half an eye on the Liverpool game though, surprising really. Still gutted that it's not us off to Anfield on Saturday.
Was expecting to come back on here after 2 defeats in a row to read about how the "Chuckle Brothers" are out of their depth by 'SickFrank' but luckily he has dropped off the face of the Social Media World - shame!
