Re election 19:18 - Nov 24 with 861 views | Boundy | I see that an online petition to call for another general election has now reached a million votes , not going to happen but a more oil on the fire of Starmer's tenure . "An online petition calling for another general election to be held has surpassed 1 million signatures after thousands more signed it every minute. The call to action was started by small business owner Michael Westwood four days ago. Mr Westwood told the Express he thinks voters feel "betrayed" by Labour and that the "promises that were told" ahead of the July election "looking nothing like" the reality. Described as Britain's fastest-ever growing petition by commentators, the campaign has been backed by a number of political figures including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who said he had "never seen anything like it" after watching 750,000 signees add their names in just 24 hours. Former Tory leadership contender Robert Jenrick said: "Over a million people have now expressed their fury that Labour lied at the general election. "Starmer shamelessly said one thing to get elected and has done the complete opposite once in power. Nobody will ever trust a word he says again."

Of course. I just find it funny that Farage and Tories are crying on the fact that someone else has lied.

Over 1.5M and flying. It won't make any difference except being highly embarrassing for Starmer.

Very true and pokiticuans are the worst of us. When will people wake up, politicians say whatever they think we need to hear to win them the elections. They don't care about us, that ship sailed a long time ago, it's not about public service, it's about self aggrandisement

That's what politics is about. Getting elected. I've never known a worse group to chose from. Unfortunately, like it or not, The Labour party were the only alternative to the Tory's.

No they weren't. Any other box and the ballot was also an alternative, maybe not a great alternative but people had choices and as long as we keep electing the same 2 tird old parties, nothing changes.

That's what I mean. With the current system it's Labour or the Tory's. I'm genuinely worried about Reform making headway becasue they'd be a complete disaster.

It’s obvious that this country needs reform (with a small r). The model isn’t working. We’re supposedly one of the most wealthy countries in the world and we’re still paying through the nose and being taxed til the pips squeaked just to keep the lights on. It just doesn’t add up. The only way change will ever happen, the only time these cretins will actually listen is if there’s a real existential threat to the status quo. History has shown us time and time again that the great acts of reform have always come about because those in power face the real prospect of being defenestrated. For example the reforms of the early 1900’s and the advance of workers rights were almost certainly the result of or at least heavily influenced by the threat of communism spreading in Europe and the events in Ipatiev House. So for anything to change the established two party system needs to come under some serious pressure, and Reform seem to have captured something amongst those disaffected by the current status quo. They are not to be underestimated. Are they the cure? Absolutely not, but they could be the massive kick up the arse the country needs.

I certainly think the shock effect could work at Senedd election level. I'm not too keen on the present Reform line-up, but if more people got on board it may develop into something more credible.

The problem I have with Reform (the political business, not political reform) is it'll be a kick up the arse in the completely wrong direction.

This is why I have long been saying vote for independent candidates. That will give both Labour and Tory a right kick up the rear end without any fear of some absurd mouthpiece like Farage getting any power. Haven't we learned after Bojo...

At the moment all of the major parties only have to appeal to their traditional support and a few hundred other people in certain constituencies. First past the post doesn't work and to many people don't vote at all. PR and compulsory voting would mean they'd have to try to appeal to everyone. It wouldn't be perfect nothing would be, but it would see the end of two party dominance.
