It obviously works...just read some of the comments above.

The people don’t tolerate it, people should be aware there is a real antagonistic racist view in a lot of the population. Migrants aren’t welcome. And the more that come, the more the right wing gain in popularity, VOX especially. The illegal migrant issue causes massive rises in support for right wing parties.

It's a pander to the Daily Mail / GBNews. This is almost certainly the right thing to do, started and almost finished by the conservatives. Starmer's fault though.

Chagos Islands on 07:07 - Oct 7 with 1237 views | Dr_Winston | There is of course the possibility that negotiations that have dragged on for some time under the previous Govt have suddenly come to a conclusion as the new one capitulated. It's not as if it would be the first time that has happened since July. Or even the second.

It seems to me we don't yet have sufficient information to know what happened with the negotiations. In particular we need to know what happened after Cameron put the negotiations on hold and then what Jonathan Powell's input was, and how this shaped the content of the treaty (which i should think is still amendable as it has not received Parliamentary approval). I would be very surprised if "rubber stamping" of an almost-complete agreement is all that happened. In media interviews that Powell gave he seemed to be trying to take credit for moving things on and ensuring that the position of the UK was safeguarded with detailed treaty provisions. A couple of the Tories involved published newspaper articles over the weekend questioning the idea they would have sanctioned this deal, but it is hard to collate all the data at this stage. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Australia next to claim their own territory back on the cards , royal visits pointless and a headline PR stunt for Buck House . Chagos Islands on 11:22 - Oct 8 with 998 views | ReslovenSwan1 | People need to be careful with their words and not accept spin. The Flatlands were NEVER Argentinian so the idea of given them "back" is fake. Ethnically British people live there. The Nail called them " predominantly Welsh" when they did a hatchet job The Chagos are no use to use to UK. We need to stay friendly with Mauritius and send them our tourists. Tho only important thing is the air base at Diego Garcia. A 100 year lease but unless Mauritius get a hard left Sandinista type government there should be no issues renewing when I a m well gone. It is a massive local employer. The Mauritains would have to be mad to play around with the PRC or hard left. .

Are you still considered a migrant Keith ? Be terrible if the populists made the ordinary people unwelcoming to law abiding people like yourself. The populists need to stop ‘theming’ people. They wont though as it wins votes.

Most people (with a brain) recognise that legal migration is essential and beneficial for any civilised society. Law-abiding migrants contribute positively, integrating into their communities and enriching the cultural fabric without causing disruption. In contrast, illegal immigration often raises significant concerns. Many of these individuals come from challenging circumstances, and there are many instances where individuals with very nasty criminal backgrounds are released from prisons in their home countries, seeking to enter more developed nations. This can lead to increased chaos and social tension, undermining the values and stability of the host society.

Chagos Islands on 17:48 - Oct 4 by SullutaCreturned | The real difference there is that the Falklanders are massively in favour of staying with the UK. They ghad a vote which was, I believe, 99.8% in favour of remaining British on a 92% turnout. |
Yet the year before, the Thatcher passed a law saying they did not have automatic right to live in the UK

Is the correct answer, the piece of legislation you are referring to was British Nationality Act 1981 - it was subsequently updated and amended by the British Nationality (Falkland Islands) Act 1983

Surely the punch line that needs adding is that the 1983 Act conferred full British citizenship on the Falkland Islanders, giving the right to settle in the UK if they wish to do so, and having retrospective effect on the period covered by the 1981 Act? If the comparison between Falklands Islanders and Chagossians is the issue, then it should be noted that The Nationality and Borders Act 2022 provides a path for Chagossians to obtain British citizenship and right to settle in the UK. Basically they have 5 years to apply from November 2022 or (for younger applicants) until their 23rd birthday. So some conditionality but overall quite permissive.

It was amended after the conflict. but prior to that, Maggie couldn't have given a toss about the islanders. Many Brits didn't even know where the Falklands was

Yes, but the discussion was about similarities and differences between the UK's approach to the two overseas territories, and whether the populations want British protection. I suppose one could say that a point of similarity in both cases was that a situation where moving to live in the UK was very difficult changed to one where it is a near certainty for those who want to make the move.
