OT- Barcelona visit 12:12 - May 14 with 4155 viewswatihus

I will be in Barcelona for some project-related work in late July.  Any hotel recommendations? May be some bars or places to visit? This will be my first time over there. Also, I was wondering when the Barcelona vs. Manchester City match would be. If the schedule is in Camp Nou, I will try to attend.

Here is my list of good coffee, small restaurants and wine bars when I was last there (2022 I think)

Things to do, depends on your interests but walking round Montjuic and Parc Guell are pretty cool, Picasso museum is pretty good as is just wandering the Gothic Quarter drinking vermut.

Bar Marsella is quite funny - 18th century absinthe bar, though I did once end up in the gutter outside, as is the 90's themed Bar Manchester.

But mostly, watch your stuff. Pickpocketing is out of control

The Barcelona vs Manchester City game is in America. I am pretty sure Nou Camp is closed for the next couple of seasons for refurbishment. Last time I saw a picture of the stadium 75% of it had been demolished.

Got excited for a few seconds. Thought this was an ITK announcement of a pre-season friendly.

Have a great time time anyway. Love the sound of that 18th Century absinthe bar. That would be top of my list. Or perhaps bottom of my list as I wouldn’t get much done after a sesh there - apart from maybe some obscurant fée verte addled lines of verse.

Yeah the game is in the States and Barcelona currently play their games at the old Olympic Stadium. Not sure if Camp Nou is going to meet its deadline for December 2024 re-opening either.

Either way, a walk up Montjuïc where the Olympic Stadium is nice for some panoramic views of the city as well as having the big art museum and some various gardens. The old castle/military fortress up there too. Or the old Civil War bunkers in the Carmel neighbourhood, although they get super busy in the day usually....or at least did last time I went up there. 20 minutes on the train gets you to Sant Cugat del Vallès, starting point for some lovely hiking....nah more importantly, pilgrimage to the birthplace of our lord and saviour Sant Martí Cifuentes. The hiking is nice though...maybe not in the middle of July. But usually.

Edit - yeah, Bar Marsella. Do it.

Great place to visit . Beaches are great . Las ramblas has great bars and restaurants. Particular favourite is a bar called O Flahertys .
Great breakfast and decent pint.
As Robith said, watch your pockets. It’s lethal.

That certainly is a great bar isn’t it?I’ve popped in every time I’ve been to Barcelona.

Man That's a bummer. It looks like there's only one tour left to check out Camp Nou.

As people have said most of the action is around Las Ramblas. I also recommend Montjuïc and the metro system will get you there.

The Sagrada Família church is also worth a view and once you have seen it you will notice more of the architects, Antoni Gaudí, work around the city.

Also a short train ride from Barcelona is Sitges a nice historical seaside town.

You can go inside Sagrada Família but it is very expensive.

That’s the one . It’s tucked in around the back of las ramblas .
Not particularly scenic but the booze is excellent and the breakfast is superb.
Another one is Bar Sincopa a compact bar which serves the most amazing mojitas .
Address is. Carrer d’avinjo 35 Ciutat Vella 08002 Barcalona .
The staff are unbelievably nice and considerate.

Went early this year.

I love the place. A city with a good sandy beach is where I want to live in the future.
Barcelona or Valencia currently my favourites.

I got bang into vermouth on my last trip. Lovely to sip on in the sun.

List here of places I saved to try and go to.
Bars, wine bars, restaurants. Some more high end than others

Reminds me looking at Jamie's list, El Xamapnyet is a fun little place to stop in for Tapas. Quite famous around town.

If for any reason you happen to find yourself in the district of Sarriá, there is a great little place called Bar Tomas. Its proper old fashioned but the Patatas Bravas are immense. Proper potatoes, spicy oil and heaps of aioli. That with a cold beer, perfect. I probably go there at least once a month!

Take in Sagrada, the port, the beach and Las Ramblas. There's other Gaudi buildings worth looking for.
Montjuic where the swimming took place in 1992 has spectacular views but the pool itself looked in poor condition. Is it worth it? Debatable.
Parc Guell is superb but it's a fair walk to decent transport.
Watch for the pickpockets. Many years ago, my son was walking home at 6am, the worse for drink, when he got collared. The thief got lifted by the neck against a wall.

I am always somewhat reticent to contribute to threads such as these, as what you get out of / enjoy from a city will be down to your personal tastes – and age? (Indeed, you may not like cities, or this one!)

However, I have been to Barcelona about a dozen times and I am a fan.

I would recommend that you do the open top bus tour https://www.barcelonabusturistic.cat/en which is hop on / hop-off but you don’t necessarily need to do that as you can always go back to sites that spark your interest using public transport. Barcelona has a comprehensive integrated metro / bus / train network.

Everyone knows about the Sagrada Familia but I think there are better Gaudi (and other modernista) buildings. By all means go inside and do the tour but it is (was) expensive and it’s still not finished! You can get good pics from outside without going in. I personally recommend https://www.casabatllo.es/en/ which is central. (Tip – always take out an audio guide.)

La Rambla is a tourist trap but still good but the city is so much more than this.

I actually got a guide from https://gowithguide.com/spain/barcelona and he made an itinerary like this: Paseo de Gracia, Sagrada Familia, Casa Battlo, Some Gastronomic Experience on Day 1, and Gothic Quarter on Day 2. I am getting charged $500 for this two-day guided tour. Do you think it's a reasonable price?

I’ll be honest - that looks a bit steep.

But I am a notorious tight wad.
