EFL Championship
Wednesday 27th January 2021
Liberty Stadium
Kick Off 7pm

Rearranged from this weekend due to the fact the swans had to thrash Nottingham Forest 5-1 in the FA Cup. Brentford lost at home to Leicester City.

TV listings to follow.

Match officials
JOHN BROOKS
Nick Greenhalgh and Akil Howson
Fourth Official : James Linington

John Brooks practising his Borini celebrations.

Brooksey as we know him here at Swansea Independent was the referee when the swans beat Leckwith 2-0 in December. In fact the last three games he has taken charge of for the swans have resulted in wins. The other was a draw. His first game officiating the swans was a loss at home to Crystal Palace. Another star performer in the referee game Brooksey is also from Melton Tony Mowbray. Born in 1991 he left school at 18 in 2009 which makes him quite a young chap. Brooksey is very well thought of in the referee world and we can find no reason why he shouldn’t hand the game to Swansea especially if ‘Dancing Ryan Manning’ gets on the pitch.

Frankly Thomas

Thomas Frank is the much loved manager of Brentford.

Thomas Frank is an American democrat when he’s not manager of Brentford, he lives in Maryland in that USA with his Mrs and kids, most of his games where he has managed Brentford have been done by Gareth Ainsworth because of the lockdown issues and commuting by aeroplane from America. Obviously you can choose to believe this or not, that’s up to you. Swansea supporters are big fans of Thomas, especially when he gets all feisty and throws his lovely locks of hair about like a crazy Julian Clarey.

The real Thomas the Frank engine

Frank is a real bubbly chap, he has a real desire to shout in your face and toodle pip his blowers in your ears. Below is a short interview with this much loved children’s train.

This interview was before the embarrassing defeat to lowly Leicester Fosse.

At the start of the year, Brentford FC Head Coach Thomas Frank was named Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for December. The Bees played eight Championship games in December and won five of them. The other three were drawn to ensure Brentford were unbeaten through the month and that was enough to earn Thomas, on behalf of the squad, the award. The Bees picked up 18 points in their eight games, scoring 16 goals and conceding just eight. There were home wins over Reading and AFC Bournemouth, who are in the top six in the table, as well as away victories against Rotherham United, Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City. The Bees also beat Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup Quarter Final.

After being informed he had won the award, Thomas spoke to The Sun, on a video call. He talked about Brentford's season so far and about the end of the 2019/20 campaign when The Bees finished third in the Championship and lost the Play-Off Final. He also talked about some of the factors that are helping the Club progress. "We have this unique togetherness where you can see that everything’s aligned from top to bottom — from the staff, players and me to the board and owner," said Thomas. “We’re all good people who work in the same direction. We have this attitude, believe in ourselves and are humble. If you’re not humble, someone will run past you. “We also work extremely hard because you achieve nothing otherwise. You must perform every day and that performance comes on and off the training pitch. These bits are extremely important. “Beside that is our style of play where we’re clear in how we want to do it. That added together and consistency reaps great results. Maybe we didn’t have the margins with us last year but if we keep doing this the scoreboard will take care of itself.”

We've not been consistently lucky this season so he must be doing something right. You make decent points. It just makes me mad to see the words cowardly and gutless bandied around. There are a couple of posters salivating just waiting for certain players to make a mistake to pounce with their bile.

Gutless was exactly what it was though.

Not sure it's the players fault tonight if we were getting overrun in midfield chasing shadows became so deep when we did win it back couldn't get out..if cooper had matched things up I still think they would been better but not had the space and possesion

Disagree, but there you go, that's your prerogative. If it had been gutless, we'd have lost by a few more goals.

Gutless? By the players? Definitely not, by the manager? Yes?

He shat himself and set us up not to lose.

He will have learnt by this I'm sure, we move onto rotherham where imo we will tear them a new one.

How else could we have set up? We take off a midfielder / defender to go attacking and we lose that game last night.

Could have matched them and gone 4411 as I said previously they played that system and then pushed their full backs high pushing our wing backs deeper then their 4 in the middle overrun our 3 should changed it...I could see what was happening

So that means potentially having 2 men in the middle instead of 3 when we were already quite open there?

At the back too I don't think some of the last ditch defending would have been helped by one man less at the back.

Could have worked, but for me with the players available (mainly Smith) don't think changing shape to that would have worked. We were poor in aspects nothing to do with shape - looked leggy from the off and we made a lot of unforced errors, misplaced passes etc, looked nervous and ponderous from the off and that's nothing to do with the formation.

No not at all we played 3 at the back last night with 5 across the middle 3 midfielder and 2 wing backs and 2 up front 352 or you could jazz It up and call it 3142 or 3232 but whichever way you want call it it's 3 centre halves with 3 midfielders Fulton Grimes and hourihane with 2 wingbacks wide ,5 across the middle,Brentford set out 4411 with 4 in the middle but their 2 full backs played high in which pushed our wing backs further back meaning our5 became 3 leaving 4 against 3 in middle park

We were missing our two best and most consistent players in Smith and Bennett and their leadership too. Would still have been a hard game last night but we might just have edged it with those two playing.

Not in my eyes they out thought us and ov errun using midfield with their system it was scandalous that we were constantly under the cosh and didn't change things carried on playing 2 up front for a start. When they weren't seeing the ball and we were overrun.should gone 4411 given us extra protection

Was Bennett injured. Is so ,I withdraw my remarks re Naughton. If not,Cooper deserves all the flak going, because not selecting Bennett,IMO,cost us a win.
The players left standing were pretty magnificent in their application whilst our manager Im afraid showed his true colours again.

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

No just employ the press to cut their space and tire them out, we could have done it in periods instead of inviting pressure.

The set up didnt help either the wing backs had to defend more than attack as our two midfielders in middle were overrun, it should have been 442, we could have overcome their midfield and possibly got a foothold in the game.

What worries me about cooper is that he doesnt change formation when things are going wrong, we have the players who can do a job in any formation so I dont see why we cant adapt when things are going bad.

If teams press on then one of Woodmans option is to find the wing backs but he struggled to hit the man giving possession away similarly when we did have the ball in the midfield we tried to play to the forwards but they failed to keep onside again giving away possession, would I drop Woodman, Lowe or Ayew, no.
We also had two opportunities in their box where our players got in each others way, just one of thoughs games, trying to hard, lack of communication, new man in the middle, dropping back too deep, giving man on the ball too much time.
Did we defend well, yes we had to,was I happy to get a draw in the end yes but eventually you have to impose your will on the game, we have shown a little too much respect to the top teams.
To go up automatically you need to beat the top
teams.
In the play off games last year we imposed our game on Brentford the first game and won, they did a job on us the second game.
Give good teams time on the ball and they will cause us problems, if we make time on the ball we will cause them. problems, It is up to the manager and leaders on the pitch to ensure we impose our game on other teams which I don't think we did yesterday.

Of course we would have because Smith would have had to come in for say Fulton and it would have still been 3 against 4 in the middle unless Smith can split himself in half..he should have changed his system as Frank out thought us by putting extra man in there and pushing our wing backs further back by playing his full backs high pushing us deep leaving as I said 4 against 3 and when we got the ball we were so deep there were no options..

'just' employ the press. As simple as that?

The high press isn't the right tactic to use against every team. I'd say Brentford are not one of those teams. Very risky.

You can't employ the press when you are so deep and can't get out..and the reason was they forced us back by their system against ours I have been explaining what I saw with my own eyes.im not making it up they played 4411 also pushing their full backs on,pushing our wing backs deep leaving 4 agains 3 in midfield meaning others getting dragged out to compensate,in turn just playing around us.leaving us deeper and deeper that when we won the ball we were boxed in with our forwards having come deep as well finding it hard to start anything

Is it wise reverting to such an unfamiliar system for us during such an important and evenly poised (scoreline wise) game? Not sure we'd even have the personnel to play that system?

The press would have stopped them overrunning us in midfield, we should have gone 4 4 2 to swamp the midfield but cooper doesnt like to change systems, we are defending well as we are well drilled, fit and combative, but cooper needs to look at other systems to get past teams like brentford, norwich will be the same.

And how exactly is 4-4-2 “ swamping the midfield “. 😂

Why not 2-6-2

Or 1-8-1

Or 2-8-0
